HE FOUGHT THE EFFECTIVE FIGHT FOR PEACE! From a loving home he came each day, From a loving mother's arms, His face all wreathed in radiant smiles, With never a thought of harm. I And a Qlittlel child shall lead themnl Into the pitcher's box he stepped, And pitched to win or lose-- And all for the fun of playing, No team did he refuse. There was no barrier of station or race, To him and his little gang-- In loving spirit they played out the creed, That, for a' that, a man is a man. f Just couldn't be Jimmie Hoover j Oh! yes, Freedman boys, you're wrong-- For the God of Love in mercy reached down And quietly took him home, Ere the God of Hate and War could clutch And claim him for his own. Oh! he went out with a ball and a glove-- He who ne'er knew tho't of harm-- He finished his day in perfect love, Unmarred by hate or cruel use of arms. f The important thing is that we Be prepared to meet these little ones, ' said the mellow-voiced neighbor man.j Ah! yes, he flings to us the torch Of the loving Jesus' spirit, May he live not in Heaven alone but in us That we may Heaven merit. And now, the big leaguers whom he adored, Whose lives he eagerly scanned-- Walter Johnson, Lou Gehrig, and all the rest-- He's with them in the great Free Land. He, who fought the effective fight for peace, Our beautiful son of Love, His tools a wreath of radiant smiles And a bat and a ball and a glove. Q Best little sportl ever knew, said his coach, many a time passing him on the road., So may we behind, in tho't, word, or deed Never let him down, But run, like him, the clean, straight race, Till we, too, obtain the crown!
