From a loving home he came each day, From a loving mother's arms, His face all wreathed in radiant smiles, With never a thought of harm. I And a Qlittlel child shall lead themnl Into the pitcher's box he stepped, And pitched to win or lose-- And all for the fun of playing, No team did he refuse. There was no barrier of station or race, To him and his little gang-- In loving spirit they played out the creed, That, for a' that, a man is a man. f Just couldn't be Jimmie Hoover j Oh! yes, Freedman boys, you're wrong-- For the God of Love in mercy reached down And quietly took him home, Ere the God of Hate and War could clutch And claim him for his own. Oh! he went out with a ball and a glove-- He who ne'er knew tho't of harm-- He finished his day in perfect love, Unmarred by hate or cruel use of arms. f The important thing is that we Be prepared to meet these little ones, ' said the mellow-voiced neighbor man.j Ah! yes, he flings to us the torch Of the loving Jesus' spirit, May he live not in Heaven alone but in us That we may Heaven merit. NRJ1 vi L. 1 l IN OUR PAST It was 12 years ago when the present seniors were introduced to the idea of school life. We were anxious to learn the 3 R's, Readin, Ritin, Rithmetic and meet many new friends. After we learned our A, B, C's we really felt that we were smart! The higher the grades were the more complicated the subjects were. In the eighth grade we played our first basketball games. When we graduated from the eighth grade and were ready to enter high school, we knew it wouldn't be as long as it had been until we would become seniors. We thought the first two years of high school had passed rapidly but in the eleventh grade the time passed more rapidly than ever. We gave a play, and did various other activities to raise money for the Junior-Senior banquet. During these twelve years, of the present Seniors, twenty-one have gone all twelve years together. Andy Benfield, Melba Greene, and Evelyn Setzer joined our midst in the 3rd grade. Lola Richards came from Oregon and joined us in the sixth grade, Nancy Everhart came from Lenoir in the seventh grade. Barbara Harris, and Barbara Winchester joined our class in the eleventh grade. All events leading up to our graduation exercises were looked to with anxiety. As we graduate we hope the history of our school days will be looked back upon while we are making another chapter in the history of our lives. IN OUR FUTURE On a bright sunny morning in 1965, the bell rang at Morganton High School for the school term. The commercial teacher, Blaine Martin, hurries to his class. As he began to call the roll someone burst into the room. Professor Martin looked up and saw his old cronie, E. N. Watson. Martin excused his students in order to talk over old times with E. N. What has happened to you since we left Dear Ole Gamewell ? , asked Blaine. I am now manager of Belk's Department Store, and as you know Ginger and I are married and live in Valmead. Tell me about some of our class- mates, said Blaine, I am very anxious to hear from them. Edith Mikeal is playing professional basketball for Granite Falls. re- plied E. N. What happened to Robert Eller and Tellas Greene ? asked Blaine. Robert is an artist for a large firm in New York, and Tellas is the boss- man at Bernhart Furniture Company, said E. N. Betty White married Jack Swanson and lives in South Carolina. They have two boys and a girl. Is Wanda Caudle married yet? asked Blaine. No, Wanda has a television show over CBS three nights a week. She sings on the Perry Como Show also, replied E. N. Carolyn got married in June after school was out. She and Lester live in Chicago, Illinois. They have twin daughters. Did Barbara Moore go to college in Illinois '? asked Blaine. No, Barbara Moore has a secretarial job at Kent-Coffey's. She is en- gaged to Bill Coffey, said E. N. Betty Houck is assistant manager at the Glamour Shop, she and Merle Prestwood finally tied the marriage knot. By the way, what happened to Harold Cannon? asked Blaine. Harold still works at Carl's Lunchonette. IN OUR FUTURE nl Shirley Greene graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College. She and Bill Pierce are engaged now. said E. N. What about Melba Greene and Evelyn Setzer? asked Blaine. n They are registered nurses at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, replied E. N. Amy Lee and Mavis got married and live in Lenoir. Amy Lee works at the County Garage. no Doesn't Andy work at Hai-per's Furniture ? asked Blaine. Yes, replied E. N. he and Miriam Pitts are married and have a new son. at Mary Ellen is going to college and plans to be a lawyer, said E. N. If you remember her, you know she'll make a good one. Is Wilma Jean married yet? asked Blaine. Yes, replied E. N. she's married and living with a house full of in-laws. What happened to the pests, Fletus and Norma Rae ? Norma Rae is floorwalker at Roses Dime Store, and Fletus is an inspector at the Blue Bell. Nancy and Betty Jean are telephone operators in Charlotte.' What happened to Tincy Mikeal and Barbara Harris? asked Blaine. I heard they were rnajorettes for Valdese Band. They are now, but will move with the band to Raleigh the first of Novem- ber, said E. N. That leaves Barbara Winchester, Mary Craig and Lola Richards, said Blaine. Mary is a nurse at Bla.ckwelcler's, Barbara pops corn at the Avon Theater, and Lola is married to Dermont Pope, and has two boys. She is owner of a beauty salon in Ohio. What became of our dear teacher, Howard Holman? asked Blaine. He is still teaching at Gamewell, but he hasn't been a senior home-room teacher since we graduated, said E. N. By the way, his hair has turned grey and he has false teeth, but still teaching bookkeeping. Well, said Blaine, it sure has been a pleasure re -living my school days, but I must begin class or I'll end up on the hill not far from here where all dear teachers go.
