Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1980 volume:

This year’s dedication goes to a person that everyone at Galway comes in contact with at least once. After that, people seem to keep coming back to him as a true friend. His personality, warmth, and friendliness seem to attract anyone and everyone. Besides all this, he is dedicated to his work and has managed to get the yearbook out every year for the past thirteen years. We, the staff of the 1980 Galway Piper, feel that we have made an excellent choice in our selection of Mr. Stephen Ruszczyk for this year’s dedication. 3 Table of Contents Executive Staff: Advisor — Mr Ruszczyk Editor — Elizabeth Gaines Layout — Tracy Stanley Photography — Sheri Letourneau Artwork — Anne Westa Circulation — Kim Rowe Typing — Chris Sawyer Ads — Susan Manell 4 Faculty and Administration Seniors Underclassmen Sports Activities Ads page 5 page 17 page 59 page 77 page 101 page 127 Mr. Ronald Gillespie Mr. Richard Lukasiewicz Mr. Wallace VanDerwerker Sitting Mrs Reedy, Mrs. Gaines — President, Mrs Parkinson Standing: Mr Lachtrupp, Mr McConhie, Mr. Jezierski, Mr Wood 6 Math Department Mr. Swierowski Mr. Barkley Mr. Gorga Business Department Mrs. VanVranken Mr. Nolett e History Department Mr. Ruszczyk Mr. Connelly Mr. Fesler Mrs. Wilkins Mrs. Thompson Librarian Resource Teacher Mr. Davenport Mrs. T rask 9cience Department Mr. Naple Mr. Sutton Mrs. Westa Mr. Dickinson Mrs. Estus Health Home-Ec Mr. Gray Mr. Rhodes Industrial Arts Department Mr. Smith Music Depart- ment Miss Cervenka Mr. Sleeper 11 Physical Education Department Mr. Goodemote Mrs. Agar Mrs. Riggins Mr. Birbilis Reading Qchool Nurse Mrs. Hagarty 12 Office Staff B Pawlowski, J. The world-renowned town of Galway is definitely buzzing today. Not only is it the site of the 1990 late spring early summer Olympics, but host to the class of 1980 reunion. As Mr. Naple enters the prestigious Galway Hilton, he is greeted by manager AMY LUKASIEWICZ and maitre d' JON WOLFF. Apparently DONALD KELLER is having problems parking the car, but with the help of ROGER GOODHUE and LARRY DUMAR, of the Lar-ger Construction Company, he manages to “make” a space. Traffic is becoming a problem despite the efforts being made by policemen MATT GIBBONS and JIM O'SULLIVAN to get Grand Prix winner, DAN STENSTREAM to pedal his tricycle a little faster. Farming magnate, DAVE SMITH, has the solution-driving his tractor down the center of 147 clearing everything out of the way. Out on the field we see the opening ceremonies for the Olympics beginning. Band leader, JOHANNA SMITH raises her baton as soloist WALTER SCHMIDT breaks into the national anthem. No wait- it’s the Galway Alma Mater and amazingly a few members of the crowd recall the words and join in. The teams are now marching onto the field, led by Galway’s finest dressed in vivid red and white costumes created by designers MELINDA HOERAUF and LORETTA ROGERS and featured in several fashion magazines modeled by DARLENE MYERS and TERI CRAFT. The first event is the fox and hound competition. Limbo expert STAN ARMER and gourmet chef, LINDA COLLINS must try to catch STEVE BOR-NITZKE, author of the Slop Me If You’ve Heard This One, and well-known gymnast DONNA HOLLENBECK. There seems to be a commotion starting near the entrance to the Nature Trail because SCOTT ARMER, famed tree-surgeon, was seen taking over for Stan. Officials TERRY ABRAMS, RICH DATKUN, SHELLY SCOVILLE, and CATHY POLLARD, in the process of making a ruling, are plowed down by marathoner MIKE MANNING, the only man to circle the world on foot. The egg toss can be seen getting underway with team members JIM BUTTON, DIANE DENKER, JON DREYMANN and DEBBIE ST. LOUIS just returning from a world tour. Their opponents, JIM FERRARO, KARL HOEGEMANN, NORA MONROE and BETTY SPRINGER, although the underdogs at the beginning, pull off an amazing victory with a death defying catch by Jim at 30 meters. Looking through the crowd we notice several local dignitaries: Senators LISA HAMMOND and DAVE BINTZ, prima ballerina MARGUERITE SPENSIERI, Galway’s ambassador to France KIRSTEN ROHL-ING, syndicated gossip columnist KIM ROWE, and MISSY MILTON, author of Another Elizabeth the Great?, a comical biography of Kentucky Derby winner ELIZABETH GAINES. JAMES QUINN, RONALD SURDYKA, and DIRK WEAVER, owners of the Galway Auto Body Shop, are in a heated discussion with ERA advocates DARLA WADSWORTH, KIM SHERMAN, KATHY TRANKA, and MARIA COKELET about the use of female mechanics. Restaurant proprietors ERIC HILGER and GAIL FARRELL are seen quibbling over the price of tea in China. JEFF KINGSBURY and DARIN REICHEL, supervisors of Swingtown, the local tree nursery are picking up new techniques from renager JIM LETOURNEAU and RICK LEC-LAIR. 49 Turning our attention back to the field we hear the dull roar of the talking competition. BILL BOER-ENKO, chairman of the local Dairy Association, is running a close second to opera star BETH LYONS. Batting for the bronze are TIM DOWNES and BECKY ISABELLE. and KIM RYAN do a fast, but efficient, job of fixing him up. BUD MURPHY, DARREN SCHAPER-JOHN, and CHRIS BROWN, parole officers for the Galway Penetentiary, have been practicing and each comes up with a penny and a better time than the last. The final event is being held at nearby Galway Lake, and the teams and spectators are being transported there by planes piloted by SCOTT COMRIE and DAVID SCOTT of Aircraft Associates Scott and Scott. Flight attendants JENNIFER BER-MAS, SUSAN MANELL and CARLO RUSSO seem to be making the passengers comfortable during the brief, but turbulent ride. As the last plane touches down we see the first competitor put on his suit and prepare for the scuba diving competition. GREG WETMORE, the first man to juggle his way up Mt. Everest in a wetsuit, must find a penny placed at the bottom by marine biologist MICHELE SAWYER while searching for electric eels which scientist LEE SHERMAN, and electricians JIM HUNTER had KELVIN NEAHR are convinced hold the answer to the world's energy crisis. As the sun sets behind the trees, Galway mayor — Malcolm Thatcher and last years triatholon winner MARK KALINKEWICZ and CHRIS SAWYER step forward to present the awards. They extend a special thanks to those involved in advertising, MARGARET MURPHY, JOLENE VROMAN, behind the scenes activity: Printing results — PAM GORDON, DEBBIE RIVERS and WENDY VAN HALL, and design of the OLYMPIC COMPLEX — JAMIE EARL and TERRY COWPER. AT the close of the games everyone gathers back at the Galway Hilton and editor of the Galway Register, ARNIE SABATELLI, reporters SUSAN DENISON and DENISE REYNOLDS can be seen interviewing the athletes and in general reminiscing with competitors and spectators about the good old days at Galway High. When Greg surfaces it is obvious that he urgently needs medical attention after trying to grab a pearl which he thought was the penny. Apparently pearl divers ANN FOURNIER and TONI MARCELLUS literally beat him to it Nurses NANCY SALISBURY So ends another reunion with talk of what we really want to become and whether there is life after Galway. 50 51 NICEST PERSONALITY Class CLASS CLOWNS Kirsten and Scotl Beth and Eric MOST POPULAR TEACHERS’ PESTS MOST SHY Dan and Beth Pam and Scott 52 MOST ATHLETIC Favorites MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Lee and Bitty CLASS FLIRTS Terry and Sue MOST CLASS SPIRIT Bitty and Mark CHATTERBOXES Beth and Bill FAVORITE UNDERCLASSMEN Kathy and Mitch 53 Ponytails are IN this year Huh? Aw shucks, you shouldn't have. Ain't she sweet? Doya think I’m sex ? I KNOW I’m gorgeous, but you don’t have to tell me! I’m just speechless. As the time nears, I am nervous I want to enjoy each day. but can On what lies ahead — A new life, new friends, and new memories I don't want to go, but Sometimes I wonder What will I become9 How soon will these questions be answered? Friends will be torn Eventually I will walk up the aisle with my classmates. The touching words of the speaker will echo in my mind. A tear will roll down my face, as I think Of what lies ahead. I will accept what I've earned, and turn to my friends; They, too, will shed tears As if to make me feel better My heart will pound like a drum. And my face will be stained with tears, But I shall walk proudly, Knowing that I’ve endured and accomplished. 76 Boys' Varsity Soccer Row 1 B Yankowski. H. Hoefinger. B Plantt. J. Reichel. M Westa.
