Even rarer is to find one such person who can accomplish this, yet still remain interested, concerned and supportive of others’ interests. We the students and faculty of Galway Central, have been very fortunate to have had the pleasure of knowing and working with one such person. A loyal supporter of all our activities, he has gained our friendship as well as our respect. He has always been there when we need him and truly generous with his time, his effort and himself: yet he has asked for nothing in return. His understanding has made many a difficult situation much easier to bear, and his smile has brightened many a dya for all of us. Therefore, it is with great love, respect, and friendship that we. the staff of the 1978 Piper, dedicate the 1978 Gallway Piper to Dr. Custer Quick. 5 COMMEMORATION In commemoration for the many treasured friendships, for the good times that outnumbered the bad, for the cooperation and team effort displayed throughout these past four years, we. the members of the Piper staff, are proud to extend a special vote of thanks to our class. THE CLASS OF 1978 7 To fulfill the need to be. Who 1 am in this world Is all I ask. I can't pretend to be something I'm not. And I won't wear a mask. There’s the need to be true To myself and make my Own mistakes. And not to lean too hard On someone else. No matter what it takes. 8 I’m not fool enough To ever think That I could be the Master of my fate: Up to me to choose My roads in life. Rocky may be the ones I take. There’s a need to be something more Than just a reflection of a man. I can't survive in someone’s shadow. I need my own spot to stand. I am what I am, and I have the need to be. 9 Linda Hadley Michael Hagan Robert Hartman Marilyn Kronsbein Theodore Lafforthun Heide Leregger Duane Johndrow Barbara Kenyon Timothy Kenyon Christine Maynard Jeff McKenzie Katherine Mroczko Catherine Murphy Carl Neahr Melford Neahr Nancy Loveless Rebecca MacLachlan Antonia Marra Bonnie O'Boyle Perry Orapello Mary O'Sullivan Donald Pabis Jamie Palmatee Ruth Pec h tel Richard Post Dennis Roeters Drew Roeters 16 Penny Stanton Michael Stenslream Richard Thopmson 17 Wayne Weaver Jodi Welch Jean Westa David Wctmori Sandra Wheeler Stuart Wilday Robert Wood John Wyszomirski Joseph Yankowski 18 Yvonne Young Valerie Sowle There is a smile of love And there is a smile of deceit. The ’77 Golden Eagle Harriers shocked local cross country teams this year by going undefeated and becoming Tri-Valley Section II Champions. The varsity squad was comprised of 5 sophomores and 2 juniors, giving Galway a super returning unit for ’78. Five members were named to the League All-Star squad: Stan and Scott Armer, Steve Bornitzke. Dan Stenstream, and Kathy Eaton. In addition to the varsity’s success, the junior varsity team also went undefeated to dominate the distance running scene for small schools in the Capital District. Representing Galway in the State Intersectionals in Malone was Stan Armer, while Steve Bornitzke was first alternate. Altogether it was the most successful season ever for a Galway Harrier squad. The next two seasons should prove equally as good. The action shifts to KELLY SHERMAN'S Irish Bar. Bartenders JAMIE PALMATEER and DON PABLIS are shaking drinks to the beat of music provided by the Axe Kings. JEFF McKENZIE and ANDY SMITH. The background vocals are by CHRIS MAYNARD. YVONNE YOUNG, and JODY WELCH. Master of ceremonies DAVE WETMORE GRABS the mike and announces the beginning of the dance contest. The night's favorites are PAULA EARL, SUE FABOZZ1. BARB KENYON. LINDA HADLEY. WYZO. MIKE HAGAN, and RICH POST. In the midst of all the action we see famous vets GUY CURRAN and DICK THOMPSON discussing hernia operations on billy goats. KENT ARNOLD and CLIFF GRUPF. enter the conversation to inquire about the possibilities of cross-breeding a cow and a pig to cowig. The scene shifts to the opposite corner where secretaries CINDY DAVIS. MARILYN KRONSBF.IN. VALERIE SHOWIE and KATHY MROZCKO are chatting over dinner with oil magnates JOHN DENKER and MARK QUINLAN. Entering, we see DAN CONNELLY, pro golfer, just off his great win at Pebble Beach. Included in his group are silver screen starlet NAN ALDERSON and her entourage of bodyguards JOE BAC-ZKOWSK1. WAYNE WEAVER, and MICHEL FONTAINE. Also in this group is sportscaster JOE “the amazing mouth” YANKOWSKI. Following Joe are the New York Knicks talented rookies DENNIS and DREW ROETF.RS. BROOKE SAWYER, and BOB WOOD. At the bar we see New York Cosmos coach BOB HARTMAN shootin the breeze with Jacque Cousteau’s personal assistant marine biologist. STUART WILDAY. Rubbing elbows with the coach is CARL NEAHR. forest ranger in the Ewell Gibons Memorial Park. At the end of the bar we see engineers LF.S DUBB. PERRY ORAPF.LLO. and TOD COWPER discussing the possibilities of building an atomic powered toothbrush. Just getting in from the Swiss Alps are professional downhill skier BOB KOZLOWSKI and cross country skier JEAN WESTA. Shifting to the other side of the dance floor KENNETH BOERENKO whips out his chain saw to assist JACK BUTTON in cutting up the rafters for firewood. Computing all this data are CATHY MURPHY and PENNY STANTON: doing their thing on their portable computer terminal. Next to the computer pros are RUTH PECHTEL and CHRIS GUNDERSEN who are considering opening a beauty salon. During the action, dancer MIKE HAGAN twists his back and physical therapist BECKY MACLACHLAN rushes over to apply first aid. Up by the stage soaking up the beat of some Bob Mar-ley Reggea music is contractor SANDI WHEELER and her foreman DUANE JOHNDROW. Back at the bar MIKE STENSTREAM continually harasses bartender DON PABIS to put more sunrise in his tequila. Bartender JAMIE PALMATEER is seen chatting with artists KATHY CETNAR and TONI MARRA. Car maintenance specialists DON SPRINGER and BRAD SABATEL.LI are deciding whether or not to strip golf pro DAN CONNELLY'S car. In the far corner stuntman TIM KENYON is recuperating from his latest accident. It seems he suffered a broken leg while trying to jump Kelly’s Irish Pub. He seems to be getting alot of sympathy from accountant BONNIE O'BOYLE and NANCY LOVELESS. Lighting technician BRIAN FOGG seems to have his minor stage fire under control while TED LAFFORTHUM. otherwise known as the masked executioner. converses with his manager Fred Blassy. Social Worker TOM SIVIK offers to buy athletic trainer MARY O'SULLIVAN a drink. Mary decides to go off training and accepts his invitation. At the door professional lifeguard-surfer DEB CAN ELL enters and heads for the bar amidst the rip-tide of dancers, while Olympic marathoner MEL NEAHR practices by running up and down the bar. Pharmacist LIBBY GIBBONS hops behind the bar to mix up one of her own concoctions. For the fi helped us to grow. And the happiness they brought us all thise times. I And now that high school days are done There's a closeness we've never felt before. We feel the pain of reality prevailing; knowing our day-to-day contact will be no more. We've suffered and triumphed, shared laughter and tears. All banding together when things went wrong. It gave us a oneness few classes ever feel And we've got the pride we’ve searched for so long. Yet there's happiness also as our final year ends. A feeling of accomplishment is herb as we part. We’ve made it, we’re here, after so many doubts. And it’s here the beginning of our lives is to start. We begin our new lives with a gift we've all given — The memories that are engraved in our hearts to stay. That gift is found to be the most precious. Remembered long after our voices fade away. We part thanking Gull flJI 111 bin Iriendships And thanking friends for helping us grow.
