Memory is when you look back and the answers float in to who? what? when? where? The members who were there then are repeated on a screen are recalled on a scroll are moved in a miniature drama, are collected and recollected for actions, speeches, silences, set forth by images of the mind and made in a mingling mist to do again and to do over precisely what they did do once -this is memory -sometimes slurred and blurred -this is remembering -sometimes wrecking the images and proceeding again to reconstruct what happened and how, the many little involved answers to who? what? when? where? and more involved than any how? how? Carl Sandburg Scroll Deckcatiou Truly devoted people who give eagerly and unselfishly of their time and talents are rare. And even rarer is the case when such people come in a pair. This year's Dedication recipients have given freely, enthusiastically of themselves for many years - as teachers, friends, advisors, and in their involvement in drama and Explorer's Club activities. We, the yearbook staff, proudly, gratefully, dedicate the 1974 GALWAY PIPER to two fantastic people, Mr. and Mrs. H. Richard Rhodes. 3 Let's OtotAt Out on the Lightest Oldel'P Don't fail to get a good education while you’re young. It will come in handy when you have to help with your children's homework. Scientists have discovered how to dissolve fog chemically. But not mental fog. A scientist says that mankind is of vegetable origin. Obviously. Man descended from monkeys, monkeys from trees. It is well to leave our footprints on the sands of time, but it is wise to be more cautious of our fingerprints. r iU MM W- FINANCIAL A! That's why in this section, mainly for the Seniors' benefit, there have been included some ''gems of wisdom, food for thought, and various other little tidbits of practical information . . . such as some very interesting home remedies for the little ailments that all of us must inevitably face throughout the years after we depart from GHS. We must hasten to add, however, that we haven't tested these remedies, so you'll just have to take your chances. And places with no carpet on the floor And boards tom up, And splinters. The place is filled with celebrities so let's wander around the area and see what they're up to!! Well, here in the lobby we see some familiar figures: CHRIS DRAPALA and TIM SMITH, famous snowmobile lobbyists in Washington, are engaged in trying to convince DENNIS ARMER, President of the International Olympic Committee, to include snowmobile races on Galway Lake as a feature part of the summer Olympics. A great commotion arises at the main entrance, where noted photographer BARBARA BRICE recognizes and quickly snaps pictures of some members of the American Olympic team. Professor RICHARD DENKER, world champion marathon runner, leads the group, followed by unrivaled relay runners SCOTT BOD WELL, PETE Van-VOAST and BILL WINSLOW. BRIAN JONES and LISA LaBAHN, American record holders in the high jump, follow. JOE JESSOP, the fourth member of the relay team, and MARY BETH MacLACHLAN, renowned Cornell professor, are enthusiastically discussing the recent success of their co-authored book, EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT PASSING NOTES THROUGH THE WALL IN MATH CLASS, with millionaire publisher DAVID SLADE. Wait! What's this?? The team's distinguished doctor, JOY PALMER, her staff of capable nurses, ABBIE BELL, SANDY LESNIEWSKI and PAM AINSWORTH, and her faithful laboratory technician, CATHY BULL, are seen to be rushing out the door!! Further investigation by private eyes EDGAR Sherlock PALMATEER and KATHY Watson BIXBY reveals that at the Galway Memorial Hospital JEANNETTE NEAHR, JESSIE LAWRENCE and BONNIE BARTH have simultaneously had SEPTUPLETS! !! Needless to say, the maternity ward is in desperate need of nurses! And out there in front of the hospital is Super Cop JOHN KOTRABA, frantically fighting off the flocks of frenzied photographers and news reporters who have arrived to cover this unprecedented event . . . Lucky for ace reporters BONNIE McKENZIE, MICHELE REYNOLDS, and GAIL CWIAKALA that John recognizes them -they're the only members of the press able to gain admittance to the hospital and cover the story! Casually strolling down the avenue amidst this wild bedlam are three more familiar faces. Reckless international playboys FENTON BROWN and GARY CHRISTENSEN are deep in a discussion with their lawyer, SARA TRUESDALE, about the legal technicalities of opening a Playboy Club in Galway. Business-minded Fenton discloses the fact that he has already hired four of the world's leading fashion models, LORI SHERMAN, GAIL SPENCE, JOAN SHEEHAN and KATHY MAHONEY, to work there as waitresses. Well, we might as well . . . just a minute . . . who's this leaving the hospital?? Looks like the dynamic duo of motorcycle stunt riding, DAVE and DAVE (as in PAINE and NELSON)!! They've just been visiting their 52 ptOph Cy fellow comrade, TOM COWPER, who recently made headlines by plummeting over Niagara Falls (on his Kawasaki) . . . and is making a speedy recovery. So is his motorcycle, thanks to his capable mechanics: ART ARMER, LENNY MICHELFELDER, PHIL TERRY and DAVID PLUMMER. Back at the hotel we walk right into the middle of the NYS Racing Association's annual dinner, where the incomparable trainer JAMIE BURLINGAME, the illustrious harness driver GEORGE MUSOLFF and the peerless owner of the Saratoga Racetrack, DENNIS NUMBERS, are discussing ways to improve the track. Some diseased trees need to be removed from around the backstretch; PETE DeGRAFF will be able to take care of it. Jamie thinks the infield should be beautified; the WEAVER Construction Co. (KEN and HAL), with their astounding crew of bulldozer specialists, RAY ARMER, GEORGE BATES, TIM JONES and DAVE HOLLENBECK are assured of the job. To fix the leak in the rum keg in the Clubhouse, the unrivaled plumbers, MARK VANYO and ED KELLER, should be called in. Along with the two recently acquired OTB computers, Dennis reports, come two skilled computer operators, NANCY MANSFIELD and PAT ENGEL. Across from the hotel stands the Glowegee Theater, where TOM BOTSFORD's Acting Co. is putting on their annual production of The Parties of '74 . . . Leading actress ROBIN GAINES, business manager CHERYL WATROBSKI and director ROBERT CLIFFORD are having a heated argument backstage . . . something to do with hairstylists. Robin wants to hire a fourth qualified hairstylist, BETTY SHERMAN, but Robert insists that the present artistic team of CINDY CETNAR, PAT SALISBURY and SANDY MAY is more than capable of handling her ONE head of hair! The other skillful artist JUDY BROOKS and publicity agent MARR1E CHAMBERLIN, are meanwhile cautiously trying to remind the actors that the show must go on - MARY PARISH, the most critical critic for Critical Review” magazine, is seated in the first row. After the show, billionaire oil magnates MIKE BARKLEY and RON VAN VRANKEN stop by the hotel to grab a midnight snack. Mile is in Galway charting new delivery routes, while Ron has just returned here for the reunion after a recent oil-well-hunting expedition in Texas. They are immediately recognized by four of the Hilton's first-rate waitresses, PAM KLEMENTOWSKI, LOIS MUNCHBACK, LOLA BROWN and DEB HOTALING, who rush over to their table and start to reminisce about the good old days at Galway Central . . . And so ends another day in Galway, the world's newest fun capital and playland!!! Chairman Lisa LaBahn THE COURT J. Tokarowski, S. Lesniewski, T. Mechanick, M. Parish, R. Wolfe, C. Watrobski T. Festooned with crepe paper, candles , lanterns, and even a pagoda and a dragon, everyone was entranced by the mystifying aura of the Orient. Couples glided in tempo with the slow beat of the superb music provided by Soccoro Stagecoach and sampled delicious punch and sandwi-chettes. Queen Joan Sheehan Two of the highlights of this very special evening came when Mr. and Mrs. Gorga danced their unforgettable polka and the baseball players demonstrated their very stylish, unique Baseball Shuffle. ’ ’ The three hours ended all too soon. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: Oh, you'll never do that: At least no one ever has done it: But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he’d begun it. Galway ended the season with a Tri-Valley record of 6 wins - 3 losses - 1 tie. Overall the record was 12 wins - 4 losses - 1 tie. Three more Sectional victories were then added; Galway now reigns as the Section II Class C-D Soccer Champions. All of the boys worked hard, and many did not have too many hours of experience. The Sectional championship game against Northville, held at Mayfield, was certainly a dream come true. It took a double overtime to finally defeat Northville in a truly action-packed game. 83 Pete VanVoast 1973 will long be remembered as the year of the EAGLES”, as both the Varsity (14-0) and Junior Varsity (7-0) harriers were undefeated in dual meet competition. Galway's crowning achievements included capturing the Tri-Valley League championship, thus ending a four-year domination by May-field, and defeating reigning champion Beme-Knox (and 11 other teams) to clinch the Section II Class D-E title. In JV runs the junior harriers finished 1 in every invitational meet they ran in, which included Gloversville, Broadal-bin, Galway, Mayfield and the Sectionals. Yet success is not occupying a lofty place or doing conspicuous work; it is being the best that is in you. Rattling around in too big a job is worse than filling a small one to overflowing. Dream, aspire by all means; but do not ruin the life you must lead by dreaming pipe dreams of the one you would like to lead. Make the most of what you have and are. Perhaps your trivial, immediate task is your one sure way of proving your mettle. Do the thing near at hand, and great things will come to your hand to be done.) If you can't be a pine on top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valley - but be The best little scrub by the side of the hill; Be a bush if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass, And some highway happier make; If you can’t be a muskie then just be a bass -But be the liveliest bass in the lake! We can’t all be captains, we've got to be crew, There's something for all of us here, There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do. And the task you must do is the near. If you can’t be a highway then just be a trail, If you can't be the sun be a star; It isn't by size that you win or fail -Be the best whatever you are! taken from Be the Best of Whatever You Are” by Douglas Malloch 129 BOB GRAY We've Only Just Begun ...
