“
Once in a great while, a few people stand out from all of the others. They stand out from the crowd because of their pleasant personalities, their friendliness, their ability to overlook weaknesses and forgive errors, and their willingness to give freely of time, effort, and material possessions in order to make others happy. We feel that the person we have selected has long been outstanding in these and many other personal qualities. She has invested a large part of her life in organizing extracurricular activities which benefit the students greatly; and perhaps most remarkably of all, she has had a ball doing it. As director of the Junior and Senior Choruses, the Chansonettes and Troubadours, several one-act plays and musicals, in addition to her teaching duties, she has put up with flat sopranos, little boy basses, silent singers, and a host of other hinderances, and has laughed all the way. We feel that such a person deserves recognition and credit. Therefore, we, proudly dedicate the 1973 Galway Piper to Miss Barbara Cervenka. 2 4 fl nini St ration 5 MR. FRANK HYDE District Principal A school should be judged by what it achieves for its students and for the community that it serves. A look through this yearbook will present a view of the many activities and interests that are shared by our students. School is not just a place to acquire knowledge. It is a place where one prepares for life. By participating in the whole school program students are learning to get along with one another and with adults. We in the Galway Central School are proud of what we are able to do for our students and for the community. Wtgfi Qchoob PtitoclpcJ! MR. Yet each has built us up to who we are today. None are important to live materialistically, Yet spiritually we have lived on things such as these since we first came together. These things will stay with us for the rest of our lives. So must the thoughts of friends soon to be separated May all find their own happiness yet remember and hold precious the happiness they once had with friends. The first signs of life are Mike Bender and John Hathaway ascending a monsterous sand dune which Gary Sherman is bulldozing from beneath their crampons, directed by Joan Estus who has mathematically designed a pyramid to be engineered by Roger Scott. marking this historic meeting. Over by the oasis Sherry Cheney and Evelyn Zapp are arguing over who is better qualified to be secretary to Alan Reynolds, now a highly sought lawyer, who presently is trying to drum up a little business by telling Linda Funk, Sue Capodiferro, and Becky Haskell that now is their chance to get reduced rates on divorce suits; but they are quick to recommend him to the head shrinker in our midst, Lynn Bodwell. She has been working on the incurable flirt, Jerry Bishop, who insists that he is a sheik and Chris Earl, Sharon May, Kathy McChcsncy, Michclc Smith, and Carol West are his harem. Tom Blongiewicz, a dedicated conservationist is appalled at what our little party is doing to the Sahara and is found pleading earnestly to Steve Cowper, the Prime Minister of France, who wants to make it perfectly clear that he can do nothing until Carla Gload, with the assistance of Karen Risdell, removes his right bicuspid. Meanwhile, Bill Bcnosky's attempts to cure a snake that bit him have been futile, yet he intends to save tliis patient by relaying it to Doug Pikul, our taxidermist. Julia Panasuk is having a great time with all the stray Arabian horses she has rounded up. Under the shady cactus Peggy Cuckoo and Dawn Pickncy have set up a men's beauty salon which is attracting Mr. America's like Bill Lcsnicwski, and Dave Cctnar, but her top beauticians, Diane Cctnar, Lynn Stanglc, and Pam Cornell suddenly decide to take a lunch break at Hazel Rose's place next door. Look! Up in the sky! It's Terry Mallcy and Matt Sowlc bombing around in a Foreign Legion jet. What is that speck falling from the jet? Why it's Gay Neahr, the first woman trampolinist ever to perform without a trampoline. She can't wait to land just so she can shake hands with her athletic rivals, Jim Mattice, Kent Kalinkewicz, Keith Kalinkcwicz who arc in the process of sneaking away when they realize that it is impossible because Amy Bombard, Lois Neahr, Mary Spence, and Debbie Cwiakala have surrounded the area and are taking down everything on their little steno machines. 36 Ptof)(tecy Back at the oasis, Sharon Palmatecr refuses to conic in the water, because she won't swim anywhere but in Florida waters. Sandy Quinlan lias claimed a shady palm tree and is knitting everyone lovely, wool scarfs, but for some reason nobody has them on. Behind a small sand dune music suddenly ceases and our doctor, I.iuda White and her nurses Pam Pugliese, Dora Vronian, and Dora Gaudreau rush to the scene as Mary Morris is found choking on the sand slie inhaled while practicing her trumpet. Quite a crowd has gathered at the oasis again, Mike I lata la, Steve Vanyo, and Linda Faas are dissatisfied because there is no G. E. near enough to commute to, and they refuse to take chances with Linda Reedy in her dune buggy. Bill Smith doesn't seem to be consoling them a bit with his eloquent speech on Money Isn't Everything. Sharyn Gcrardi and Delei Schaperjahn are not letting their work catch up vith them. They are drafting with sticks in the sand. Dave Bernard is disgusted with the endless desert and would trade it any day for the endless ocean, after gaining his sea legs. Ed Deckard and Jim Lyons's automotive skills aren't proving to be very effective on the camels everyone has to ride. Dave McCanc and Collcn Dropper's hillbilly ways have not changed significantly. She is now in the process of chasing him around the Sphinx. Our F. B.I. agent, Marian Fabozzi, has been watching all the goings on this day and has become more and more skeptical about the sanity of our Class. She has Charles Diggins put in a telephone line from here to civilization and the next day calls in to have us all taken in for questioning, but just in the nick of time Mr. Sutton, Mrs. John-son, Mr. Nolett, and Mr. Gleason arrive to save us all from oblivion. We will especially remember the joy of everyone helping, and the special help the chairman, Dora Gaudreau, gave to make that evening a very memorable one. Much more can be said, but nothing can describe that night as well as pictures ... QUEEN'S DANCE 43 We, the class of 1973, would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Sutton, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Nolett, and Mr. Gleason. Galway saw one of the largest turnouts for the team in the history of the school, as Galway compiled a dual meet record of 10-1. Led by Joe Jessop and Rich Denker, our co-captains, the team brought home several trophies for invitationals and other meets. Our captains were anchored very ably by the other members of the team. For the first time, two of our runners - Joe Jessop and Rich Denker - were sent to the State Intersection' als. The Varsity finished second in the Tri-Valley League and for the first time, Galway placed runner-up in the Class D-E run. The Junior Varsity also had a strong year as they placed first in the league and first in class D-E schools at the sectionals. One hundred and forty students and yearbook advisors took over 12.000 photographs during a 3 day period. All photos were processed and critiqued during the workshop. In addition to this, everyone enrolled attended 4 theory lectures, 5 one hour talks by top men in their fields, 2 slide shows by Kodak, a tour of the Rochester Institute of Technology photo department and also found time for a cookout and several social hours which included an all night rap session. Everyone was asked to fill out sheets to evaluate the workshop. Some of the comments were: quote “I hope I flunked so I can return next year” by Laurie Chapman, Amsterdam High School, Albany, N.Y. “Ramark-Varden should conduct workshops, again, again, again and again” by Terry Tiraborelli, Fairport High School, Rochester. N.Y. “I thought the whole workshop was fantastic” by Kathy Beerhalter, John F. Kennedy High School. Utica, New York. “I believe that this workshop, the knowledge and commitment that is Photographs ... The Heart of Your Yearbook involved, has broadened our minds not only as photographers, but also as adult human beings, who can work together to obtain a more advanced form of communication” by Craig Gross, Corning-Painted Post East High School, Corning. New York. Workshop ’73 has already been planned. For information, call or write Mr. Carl Tandoi, Varden Studios, Inc., Rochester, New York 14607. Phone 546-2360.
