Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1972 volume:

The 1972 Galway Piper would like to acknowledge those school spirited people who worked so hard during the last few years and contributed toward this sign for the betterment of our Galway Central School. THANKS TO: Elementary Student Council Class of 1970 Answers Please Contestants of 1971 1 DEDICATION to MR. RICHARD GOODEMOTE Since we first started school, our choice has always been there to help us, to teach us, and to be our friend. From basketball games to Pops Concerts - he's always there cheering the students on. His unshakeable confidence and excellent coaching brought Galway a winning soccer team. With sincere thanks for his constant interest in and involvement with the students of Galway, we proudly dedicate this year's GALWAY PIPER to Mr. Richard Goodemote. 5 MR. FRANK HYDE District Principal It's hard to imagine that we are in a period of revolution in education, but as our present seniors look back through the pages of this yearbook they will recognize that education in 1971-72 was definitely a year of change. Right now we see this school year as a year of belt-tightening, a period of cutbacks and reduction of programs. But out of all of this may come a new epoch for education, introducing new methods and new techniques. The students of the Galway Central School are participating in an exciting era and this yearbook will help to remind them, in the years ahead, that they were right in the middle of it. I am confident that we will all be better citizens as a result of being enthusiastic participants during this momentous period. During the past few years discipline has become an unpopular word, but I hope that we at Galway were able to implant in you that disciplines are essential to organize society, whether it be in school or when you are out on your own. An ordered and disciplined life gives us freedom to do things we want to do. Just being alive imposes chores and forces us into certain disciplines. Unless a man has the talents and knowledge to make something of himself, freedom becomes an irksome burden. What good is freedom to choose if because of the lack of knowledge and self-discipline we become ineffectual. Never stop seeking knowledge of working toward self-discipline. Best of luck 6 MR. STANDING: Tony Wallace, Advisor: Mr, Rhodes, Clayton Powers. You dirty dog! How sweet it is ! ! On April 3, 10, and 17, 1971, the Answers Please team, representing Galway Central High, played on WRGB, winning all three games and retiring from the program as undefeated champions. West Canada Valley, a high school somewhat larger than Galway, lost by a score of 60 to 270 in an attempt to win the title of 3 time champ (previously beating Cairo and Perth). Next came Roscoe Central, a much smaller school than Galway. They too were defeated by a score of 150 to 290. Finally, the third game against St. Fteters of Saratoga (approximately the same size as us) was won with the score reading 170 to 280, earning Galway the title of undefeated champs. A plaque in our school now displays the team's accomplishments along with the sign out in front which the money won helped pay for. 31 CLASS I, Mark Adamkoski, leave my shyness to Paul LoSasso. The place - the booming megatropolis of East Galway, better known as the Hollywood of the East. The occasion - The premier of the most talked about film to hit the screen since The Summer of 42 - The Winter of ’72! !! STEVE BACZKOWSKI and his wife, the former FELICIA FENDENTZ, are the first to arrive in their rented VW (chauffered by DAN FLINTON). They are wearing the biggest thing to hit the fashion world yet - the Chinchilla Couple Coat (for that together look) - raised by LAURIE JONES and styled by CATHY GAURA. KIM DALEY, Editor of The Galway Daley, has made sure that the paper's best photographers and reporters are covering this important event. DEBBIE SCHIED and RANDY WOLFE (who both claim they know how a camera works) are busy snapping pictures of the famous authoress who wrote the book which The Winter of '72 is based on, CANDY GARRETT. At her side is producer JEFF Kink CARINGI who keeps muttering, Well Motor-Mouth, you finally did something right. MARC HOWARD, DEBBIE KOENIG, and ROGER MUNCHBACH are, meanwhile, trying to get an exclusive interview with the newly appointed, playboy Supreme Court Judge, STAN DOCYK, who is surrounded by his harem - er, his secretarial staff - SHEILA ARMER, JOYCE SHEPARD, KATHY DENISON, JOAN KROHN, GAY RECKNER, and ROSE NEAHR (his private stenographer). MATT DENISON, WAYNE OLSEN, and STEVE MILAN, on their choppers, are trying to make room for Miss MELINDA WILKINS, the Queen of Broadway, now in her 10th year of Camelot, as she and her court - the famous Polish hair stylist SANDY BACZKOWSKI, publicity specialist, LYNDA CONRAD, and PAT QUINLAN, general manager. Oh no! Melinda's 50 foot, custom designed limousine (designed and cared for by JOHN MECHANICK) has just been crashed into by an enthusiastic fan on roller skates. Who is it, but LOREN GRUNEWALD, the first American to win a gold medal in the Olympics for skating uphill! Thank heavens for Trooper MARK McCARTNEY who has been able to restrain the crowd. Here to save the day is the nursing team of DAWN BISHOP, JANICE BOBAR, and PATTY DeGRAFF who quickly revive Loren. Inside the theater, we find CLAYTON POWERS, the biggest lawyer around, in a heated discussion over the price of bananas in West Outer Mongolia with the ARNOLD brothers, CHUCK and RICK, who have become an udder success in the dairy business. Nearby, the frustrated artist (who still haunts the Skidmore campus) LANCE COLE is trying to trade one of his paintings for something to eat at PHIL RICHARDS' and DAVE HICKS’s popcorn stand. Yeah Woody! I am the President! PROPHECY In another part of the theater, DAWN REYNOLDS, Saratoga's only woman jockey, is asking her trainers, PENNY SOWLE and KIM MURTLOW, if she should accept the CETNAR BROTHERS’ challenge, and race against their three-wheel truck. Horse racing expert, DEBBIE STOKNA, says she's pretty sure that Dawn is a safe bet, so PAT DiLEVA starts taking them. Dr. JOAN KACZMARCZYK and Dr. PATTI WHEELER are discussing the possibility of combining their medical knowledge, in hopes of finding a cure for neurotic red rats. MARK ADAMKOSKI, the renowned ecologist, insists that his project for saving the Flambozian gutter snake from extinction would, in the long run, make the world a nicer place to live in. Suddenly, KATHI WYSZOMIRSKI comes running in with the latest news flash. The Barkersville Symphony Orchestra, of which RUTH PARISH, GREGG-CARINGI, TOM RUSSO, and TOM BRICE are members, has been hijacked on its way back from a concert tour in Pango Pango. The hijacker? None other than the stewardess, ANDREA BROWN. What’s going on at the main entrance? Why, it's Galway’s own Thoreau, KEVIN UHLINGER, who has come out of seclusion for this world premier. Immediately, singing star, JEFF WOOD, rushes over to his almost forgotten friend, and with tears in his eyes, starts reminiscing about the ’’good old days.” At this, JENNIFER SALISBURY, who has never forgotten or forgiven her old nickname. The Beast, stalks off. Completely unaware of the excitement, JEANNE FRANK and PATTY MALACYNSKI continue their conversation on the dangers faced in the first grade classroom. DENNIS SCHAPERJAHN, still horsing around, suggests that if children were properly shod, there wouldn’t be any kick-back. The last to arrive are the inventors of the apple milkshake, RICK SMITH and RICK CARR. They are followed in by the international playboys DON PLUMMER, LESLIE HILL, and JOHN PALMATEER. The lights start flickering; time for everyone to be seated. Ushers ED KACZMARCZYK, BOB GIBBINS, and DON FAAS help the few stragglers to their seats, and just in time. There is a hush as Big Ed's room flashes on the screen, along with memories of The Winter of '72.
