Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1971 volume:

Betriration We the staff of the 1971 Galway Piper most proudly and respectfully dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Joseph Swierzowski. Anyone coming in contact with our choice for this years dedication will most heartily agree with it. Having contact with this teacher is not very difficult. If it isn't through his teaching or working as photographer for the yearbook and other activities, then it is through the reputation he has made with previous students. He has rendered invaluable service as our advisor and taught us the value of being able to look on the bright side of difficult situation. CcN t£N ts Bebitattmt 3iarult r anb Abministratuin juniors (flashes Athletics Activities Abbertisements Each man has an aptitude born with him to do easily some feat impossible to any other. Ralph Waldo Emerson Perhaps in a simplified way I look at each student as a combination lock without knowing the combination. While you are students at Galway we have tried to find the combination that will enable you to live a happy and fruitful life. With much pain and at times aggravation we have succeeded with many of you. For the others we were able to find a partial combination, and it will be up to the individual to complete the combinations that will eventually lead to a chosen vocation or profession. What ever you do where ever you may be, I wish you, the Seniors, the best of luck. This year eighteen year old citizens will be allowed to vote in all general elections throughout our country. This means that for the first time in our history, some students will be able to vote and determine how money should be spent to operate their schools. They will be able to join with their parents and taxpayers in our school district to directly participate in the course out schools will take in the future. What better demonstration do we have of the faith we have in our young people? What better proof of true democratic participation can we offer? In my book, this is placing the responsibility for decisions where it need be - upon the shoulders of those who are most affected. (Elementary principal Mr. Mottau IWrti tif (Etmratinn SEATED: J. Memory of CPthd |Janasuk ETHEL HAD SOUL Ethel Panasuk was truly a unique person. Although she will not graduate with us this June, she will always remain in our hearts as a girl who contributed much to Galway Central School I The look of love! ?! Witli this ring, I thee wed ... Che-e-e-ese!! It shrunk!!! (ila 56 The year is 1981, the site, vacation - land U.S.A.; Galway New York; where the class of 1971 is holding its first 10 year reunion. A number of the members of that memorable class are arriving by plane. We drive on out to the Swierzowski, Ruszczyk, Connlley Airfield, to meet them. We are greeted by VALERIE BARNES and ANITA ROBINSON, who work at the information desk in the lobby. As our plane taxies to a stop, we see the airport's biggest and best stewardess, LYNNE WILLIAMS, ushering the passengers off the plane. The plane is all unloaded now, and we see the pilots, TONY WALLACE and JOE APICELLA getting off. The reception if being held at Eros Inn, and on the way, we see many familiar, and some not so familiar sights. Our guide, JOHN TRZASKOS, points out on our left, a thriving new business, McChesney’s Motorcycle Shop owned and operated by PETE and AL McCHESNEY. Pete, Al, and their mechanics, JEFF HATLEY and WAYNE TRETIAK, are seen revving up their Honda 1200's to join us. Close behind them are MIKE CAPODIFERRO and FRED HOFFMAN, who now work as town police. As we arrive, we see the guests have already gathered in little groups to discuss their careers. In one group we see many of Galway's great literary artists. TOM O’BRYAN, the famous author of 'How to Shoot the Bull Without Really Trying, can be seen leading the conversation. There also, are DONNA TOAL, HOLLY CLIFFORD, and NANCY NELSON, who have contributed an eight volume set of epic poetry. On the musical side, we see JOHN BOTTOMLEY, now the leader of the ’Bottomley Brass,” chatting with the other members of the Brass, CHRIS BODWELL, CHARLIE BENDER, and his sister who made it big as a fashion model, LIZZIE BOTTOMLEY. As we go on to die next group, we find our BOCES graduates, CHERI BENNETT, and CAROL SHERMAN, discussing their newly opened business, The Galway Glamour Shop, with DONNA ROBERSON, and JOAN KONDRAT, now specialists in anatomy, and currently employed in the autopsy room at Ellis Hospital. On the outside fringe of the group, we find 1st Lt. SHIRLEY ARNOLD, head nurse at Lackland Air Force Hospital, making small talk with the world famous organist, ED LEWANDOWSKI, who stopped at Galway, on his way to Greenland to give a charity concert. Entering now, amid a mob of screaming, lust crazed females, we see our own representatives to Hollywood, DICK MILAN, (now well trained in karate) and our own golden boy., SEYMOUR DONNAN. They are attended by KAREN CURRIER, and PAM LUNDQUIST. Following, incognito, is CRETTA ROGERS, a Government Spy, out to free the world from the threat of communism. As we move around the room, we see WAYNE REEDY, JIM BERNARD, BRUCE PALMATEER, and STEVE HAMILTON, all New York State Forest Rangers, discussing the latest development in the search for the cure to tree cancer. Also involved in the discussion are DON NUMBERS and GORDIE SUITS, co-champions of the 1981 World Rodeo. CATHY SCHIED, the winner of the 1981 Women's Rodeo, lends her knowledge of tree cancer (which is absolutely nothing!!) to the conversation. We now hear a burst of giggles, and as we turn, we see LAURIE, ANITA CHAMPAGNE and SANDY NEAHR, now stenographers for our representatives to Washington, GREG SCHAAF, and JOHN SUTTON. They are greeted by three girls from the secretarial pool in the New York City 1st National Bank, JANET EARL, TESIA BILLS, and MARCIE HUNTER. We hear that these girls are exceptionally good secretaries, but the secretarial pool is sound proof, so the language they use when they make mistakes will not corrupt the reputation of the bank. And who is this we see sauntering in on the arm of pro-basketball star, DAVE MAY?? Why, it's Mrs. May, the former MISS LORI TOLSON!! You can hardly recognize her with all those minks, and diamonds, and sunglasses covering half of her face. We see that Dave insists on bringing his star players with him, and right behind him are JACK KALINKEWICZ, DAVE NEAHR, BILL JEZIERSKI, and GARY SOWLE. These guys join the prospering new owners of Snowmobile International, ” MIKE POTTER, and RICK STANGLE, who are toasting for the eighth time, GINNY LEE, who has just announced her engagement to Mickey. It looks like the KONDRAT COUSINS, JOE and DICK, have really out-done themselves this time ... They are the designers for Mick's snowmobiles, and seeing that their new Diesel 200 is a big success, they are sharing the royalties, which have come to a cool 200 grand, so far. ALDEN GAUDREAU, last year's winner of the Indy 500, is chatting with RAY BENWARE, who seems to be rather bitter since he went in the Navy. Says Ray, T still have to salute my brother!! ROGER ARMER, who is now in the middle of making a new movie, entitled Son of Tarzan's Son,” seems to be transfixed with SUE MORRIS' accounts of her kindergarten class's everyday occurrences. Also, lending her opinion on the discipline problems of today's youth is MARY ELLEN LAWRENCE, presently a junior high Math teacher. As we move towards the food and drinks, we see TOM GARRICK, the well known breeder of top racing greyhounds, talking to PAUL MUNCHBACH, who has really flipped for stunt acts, and plans on going to Hollywood to play a stunt man in the movies. Well, the band is warming up, and the food is being served as we leave this happy class reunion. We hear the buzzing of voices reminiscing about the good old days, but one voice seems to stand out from the rest, being heard saying, ... and this is what Mr. Connelly said not to get into? I, Jim Bernard, leave without Joyce. Beware Guys. I also leave Mr. SIMMONS in peace. I, Joseph Apicella, leave Miss Cervenka's candy drawer empty.
