Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1970 volume:

Mr- Donald Mealy Dedication Y ou really think so?? Move it! Move it! The executive staff of the 1970 Piper carefully examined the excellent qualities of our choice for the dedication this year. In our very first years of high school we came to know this man and respect him greatly. We would like to thank him for the many years spent coaching soccer, as advisor of Varsity Club, his untiring assistance during the gymnastic programs, and also, for his teaching ability to bring forth understanding and development of our character. We proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Donald Mealy. Now, if you squeeze like this right in the ribs... Our country has to its credit some of the most significant accomplishments in history in the areas of science, technology, automation, the arts and in the development of our social institutions. For the doubting Thomases, we should remind them that the people who made these things possible - the thousands of people, for example, who collaborated in achieving the Footprints on the Moon - were not born fully educated. With few exceptions, they were the products of the American educational system. Reflect upon these achievements as you read about plans for a devastating reduction in public funds for books, teaching materials and school libraries. The kind of world in which you live places a high premium on ability to perform efficient and effective services. Competition, both in and out of school, is becoming more exacting. For this reason what you learn in school is important to you now and to your future life. This knowledge is the foundation of your success, not only in earning money, but in living a rich and useful life. With students, parents, school and community, working together, I believe you will be able to obtain the skills to help reach your goals. I wish each and every one of you the best of luck, and may you all have the success in life for which you have wanted. BONNIE SOWLE Jh Memory of As the class of 1970 looks forward to commencement, our hearts reflect back on the memory of a young classmate whom we left behind in junior high school. Our hearts were grieved then as they are now by his premature death. Although GERALD CHASE will not be seen by the audience at graduation, he will graduate with us, for he remains in our thoughts as a classmate and as a friend. Class Prophecy WE ARE AT AN ELEGANT MANSION IN GALWAY IN THE YEAR 1980. This is the home of the airline tycoon, multi-millionaire Tom Arnold and his wife, the former Sandy Brown. Today happens to be their wedding anniversary and for a party they have decided to have a class reunion for their old friends in the Class of '70. A few of the guests are already here. As we look around we see the famous Playboy photographer, Keith Wolfe, along with his favorite model. Penny Ray, clad in her leopard bikini. Rick Hamilton is here, wearing a white lab coat with a slide rule protruding from his pocket; the tools of his trade as a nuclear physicist. Rob Terry, the electronics engineer at Lockheed Aircraft, is fighting a losing battle trying to get a word in edgewise in a conversation with the terrible trio, Karen Reynolds, Letitia Dov-han, and Denise Hatley. These three are putting their gift of gab to good use as co-hosts of a TV talk show called You Can't Shut 'em Up. ” In another area of the room we see three teachers: Ruth Morris, who teaches music; Shirley Me-chanick, who teaches math; and Larry Castell, who teaches Home Economics and Italian cooking. There are a few more arrivals coming now. As we look out to the driveway we see a big black limousine parking there. Out of it steps Glen Lane, U. S. Ambassador to Paraquay, where it's legal. Someone else is turning into the driveway now. It's Dan Arnold riding a cow from his nearby dairy-farm. Here comes Sue Brown jogging around the corner in a sweatsuit. She is now a Phys. Ed. instructor and part-time marriage counselor for students who married in college. Now we can hear the rumble of powerful engines and cloud of dust sweeps in. As the dust settles we see two vehicles. Out of the racing-type stock car step Alan Bills and Rick Kenyon, the racing team which has won races all over the country. The other vehicle is a souped-up go-cart upon which proudly sits Cliff Hoffman, World Champion Go-Cart Racer. The guests are arriving faster now. There is Hal Mathias, Coach of the Minnesota Buck basketball club, closely followed by Dan Malley, who is his Assistant Coach. Now we see Christa Apicella, the Adirondack Guide, and Pat Flinton, a N. Y. S. Forest Ranger. Here comes Gary Bull riding a tractor. Gary has achieved his fame by doing tricks and stunt driving at fairs all over the world. Martha Smith has arrived. Her occupation is a free-lance consulting expert on almost anything. Talking with Martha is Myra Gaura, the well-known psychologist and author of several sewing books. Now we see arriving three representatives of the performing arts; Sue Wood, a star of the Metropolitan Opera, Laura Smith, the Prima Balerina of the New York City Ballet, and David Benware a prominent Broadway and Shakespearean actor. Kevin Barkley has just arrived. Kevin owns a snowmobile and motorcycle shop in beautiful downtown Amsterdam, and he is talking to Larry Ainsworth and Bemie Hill, wno are partners in Midnight Auto Parts of Hagedorn Mills. Dennis Funk, A Navy C.P. O., whose specialty is missile technology aboard a Polaris submarine, is talking to Gary Malacynski, a government surveyor. Lynn Rose, a nurse; walks in just ahead of Michelle Milan, who happens to be Tom Arnold's secretary in his Airline Business, and specializes in lap dictation and office parties. The party is in full swing now and the group is quite lively, but everything stops a moment when Charlie Quinlan walks in. Charlie is a wisecracking, math-teaching bachelor who brings back memories of someone we all knew once long ago. Dan Quay, Professor of Russian History at Union College, is here now, flanked by Larry Klemen-towski and Job Sherman, co-owners of a local dairy. Theresa Sagarese. and Bonnie Sowle, owners of the Galway Beauty Salon just walked in. Dawn Malley and Kris Bombard, airline stewardesses, are here now, and they are talking to Judy McGowan, an animal veterinarian and manufacturer of jumper cables. I hree suspicious characters have just arrived. They are all wearing trench coats and dark glasses. We recognize them as Jack Smith. Dale Olsen and Bill Brown, all three of whom are now agents of the F.B.I., that's Female Bod Inspectors. The men are looking for a group which used to terrorize a study hall, run by a sweet, nice, lady math teacher. Richard Jacobs is here talking with Dave Kimball. Richard is a court reporter and Dave is a trumpet player with Herb Hirt and the Marijuana Brass. Cindy Smith and Peggy Sherman, co-owners of race-horse stables, have come with their jockey, Evelyn Brooks. With a grand flourish, that international playboy, Fred Jacobs, has just swept in. Now everyone stands clear as Linda Kalinkewicz. the first woman player in pro-iootnall enters. Linda donates her talents as middle-linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. She is closely followed by Sandy Fendentz, World Champion Demolition Derby Driver. The last two guests are arriving now. Sue Scott and Debbie Lyons. These two are competitors in the world of journalism. Sue has taken over the Dear Abby column and Debbie is now in the place of Ann Landers. And now, with everyone here, old acquaintances are renewed as everyone recalls the greatness that once walked the halls of Galway Central. The Class of '7011!
