THE GALWAY PIPER 1967 GALWAY CENTRAL SCHOOL GALWAY, N.Y. Those who know him can only approve of our choice as being the right one. We hold him in high esteem for his unselfish devotion to Galway High and its student body. Dances, assemblies, junior proms, basketball games -these are but a few of the activities that involve the services of this untiring and patient man, who has put first above all things, the school and the people within it. The 1967 Galway Piper is proudly and respectably dedicated to Mr. Edward Gorga. 4 Maria's host family, The Merritt's AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE 6 WELCOME TO GALWAY. MARIA! MARIA LUSIA MELLADO CASTILLO from Conception, Chile So this is Galway! 8 Today, education is not merely a matter of acquiring knowledge in a few basic fields. To be truly educated, a student must achieve skills in a variety of areas. The Carnegie Institute of Tech, recently made a study showing that even in such a technical field as engineering, only fifteen percent of the success of an engineer depended on his mastery of the skills of engineering; eighty-five percent of his success depended on his ability to get along with other people. We the Galway Central School are trying to give our students a good foundation in the basic subjects, but we are also trying to provide them with opportunities, through directed activities, to act and interact with teachers and their fellow students. We hope, thereby, that graduates of the Galway High School will leave Galway well on their way to becoming truly educated people. We have tried to teach you how to make wise decisions, to distinguish between truth or falsehood, between the worthwhile and the trivial. We have tried to guide you through adolescent uncertainty to young adulthood. We have encouraged and applauded initiative and creativity as well as directed individuality. These efforts have been made not - meaning to give you an economic advantage in the life ahead, but to prepare you to assume responsibility and leadership in our community and nation. if m L to R: Mr. Gemmett, Mr. Bingham, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Lundquist, Mr. Jezierski, absent Mr. Kalinkiewicz, Mr. Thomson BOARD OF EDUCATION ■ . Many people are still coming in but a few are coming out. Martin Hill can be seen ushering Mr. Bryan Simmons to the rear exit. He was quietly asked to leave because of inappropriate dress; his plaid shorts clashed with his purple sneekers. Coach A1 Rowbo, who is famous for his record of no wins, no losses, and no games played, is being interviewed by that reknowned roving reporter, Eileen Hoyle. Doris Hoffman has just been carried off the field by Wayne Morris. She has had a bad back injury from recurring falls. Dawn Reynolds, Christine Evans, Shirley Klementowski, AND Linda Cetnar are watching the Olympics on closed circuit T. V. from the kitchen where they are busy preparing 3000 brownies for refreshments. There's a bit of commotion out on the field. Bob Folensbee has just broken his right leg while attempting a 50 foot pole vault. And Bob Bull, the famous building contractor, is attempting to repair the drain in Galway’s new Olympic pool. His thumb seems to have been caught in the drain and unfortunately, Bob can't swim. Everyone panics except Don Kalinkewicz, who is calmly adjusting his scuba gear. Wait a minute, Don! You forgot your waterproof, fluorescent watch! As Don is seen dragging his victim out of the pool, nurse Marilyn Krywy, can be heard saying, Give’em air! Give'em air! Cheering Don on are Cathy DeGraff and Karen Fredericks with their famous yell of: water, water, water, water, steam, steam, steam; have we gotta, yes we gotta.... In the foreground, handing out campaign buttons, is Eric Barrett who is Barry Goldwater's running mate in the next presidential election. Vernon Sowle. in his '59 Chevy, has just broken down and he is attempting to fix it. Right there helping him is the multi-talented Cameron Lane, who can be heard saying, This is the only way to fix it!! Diane Bellenger and Georgi Schaff, the acclaimed United Nations diplomats, have just returned from a good will tour of Yemen, Zanzibar, and East Galway. Standing next to the famed artist. Matt Adam-kowski, who is busy designing a new Olympic Game insignia, is Professor Bryan Smith, who was recently acclaimed for disproving Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Never a dull moment at Galway; Sandy McChes-ney, who has finally passed her driver's examination, has just backed into the war memorial. 36 PROPHEQY Nancy Sickler, President of Sickler's Pickles, Inc., has just brought in an enormous barrel of dills and gherkins. David LaBahn has just played a triumphant fan-fare for that internation al playboy, Mickey Young, who is balancing six cans of HOJO on his nose while singing Yellow Submarine , which he has dedicated to Mr. Swier-zowski and the PNA. Ella Neahr, who is practicing for the archery competition, has just missed the apple resting on Janet West's head. Archery coach, Kathy Mc-Cartney, can be seen shrugging her shoulders and murmuring, That's Life. The famous pilot, Diane Schobert, just flew overhead, dropping thousands of phamplets concerning lung cancer. Mr. Connelly, can be seen munching on peanuts and reading Basic Rules of Basketball to his sister. Opie” Jones has just picked up some of the cancer phamphlets. He has decided to organize a marshmallow roast after the conclusion of the Olympic Games. June Champagne, has just been chosen Miss Olympic of 1977 by the President of the Gallo Wine Corporation, Dale Nelson. Mr. Gorga, is in the men's locker room, giving a last minute pep talk on how to sell refreshments to Paul Gunderson, Jim Denison, Dave McChesney, and Ray Heckler. Dr. Geoff Peacot, has just arrived at the main entrance in his little volkswagon. Maria's head can be seen protruding through the roof while Carolyn Merritt, Tim Arnold, Judy Gilchrist, Richard Armitage and Don Mattice are joking merily in the back seat. Bob Cornell, Tom Cuckoo, and Paul Kondrat have just entered the Demolition Derby Competition. But, little do they know that Doug Bell, and his souped up Chevy are to emerge victorious. Meanwhile, echoing down the halls of the locker room can be heard screams of agony; Ron Pesta has stubbed his toe and is unable to carry on. Ending a very memorable and historical day, the renowned philosopher, Frank Schwab, leaves us with the following words of wisdom; Let each become all he is capable of being. 37 CLASS I, Tim Arnold, leave my peaceful nature to my brother, Fred.
