The Galway Central School has been guided to its present position of respect among area schools by the firm hand of its administrator. Mr. Charles H. Field, with extensive teaching and supervising experience, first came to Galway as supervising principal in 1934. After a period as superintendent at Waterford, New York, he returned to Galway as administrator and resident and has since participated actively in the PTA, Boy Scouts, and a host of other community organizations. He has also continued to serve his nation as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. As principal, he has continuously sought the means of improving the system. One of his early acts was to extend the curriculum to include new courses. By conscientious attention to academic areas and faculty enlistment, he has continued to maintain Galway's standards at a level which has enabled us to compete successfully with area schools in scholarship. Largely due to his efforts, students and parents alike have gained a new respect for and a new pride in their school. This year he will retire from Galway School, but not, we are sure, from his first love, teaching. We of the Galway Piper Staff of 1962 salute Mr. Charles H. Field and bid him good luck in an ''active retirement.

In any organization there is a force which catches and carries the project along while simultaneously instilling the members with enthusiasm and the desire to succeed. Unselfishly giving his time and inexhaustible energy as the Piper advisor, Mr. Lewis has been the instrumental strength behind the yearbook staff. At the same time he has encouraged independent thought and creativeness as he does in the classroom. His sincere interest, his patience to listen and understand, spiced with his sense of humor have given Mr. Lewis a way with his students, who often gain his interest in new ideas. Therefore, we are proud to dedicate the 1962 Galway Piper to Mr. Richard W. Lewis.
