Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1962 volume:

In any organization there is a force which catches and carries the project along while simultaneously instilling the members with enthusiasm and the desire to succeed. Unselfishly giving his time and inexhaustible energy as the Piper advisor, Mr. Lewis has been the instrumental strength behind the yearbook staff. At the same time he has encouraged independent thought and creativeness as he does in the classroom. His sincere interest, his patience to listen and understand, spiced with his sense of humor have given Mr. Lewis a way with his students, who often gain his interest in new ideas. Therefore, we are proud to dedicate the 1962 Galway Piper to Mr. Richard W. Lewis. The Galway Central School has been guided to its present position of respect among area schools by the firm hand of its administrator. Mr. Charles H. Field, with extensive teaching and supervising experience, first came to Galway as supervising principal in 1934. After a period as superintendent at Waterford, New York, he returned to Galway as administrator and resident and has since participated actively in the PTA, Boy Scouts, and a host of other community organizations. He has also continued to serve his nation as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. As principal, he has continuously sought the means of improving the system. One of his early acts was to extend the curriculum to include new courses. By conscientious attention to academic areas and faculty enlistment, he has continued to maintain Galway's standards at a level which has enabled us to compete successfully with area schools in scholarship. Largely due to his efforts, students and parents alike have gained a new respect for and a new pride in their school. This year he will retire from Galway School, but not, we are sure, from his first love, teaching. We of the Galway Piper Staff of 1962 salute Mr. Charles H. Field and bid him good luck in an ''active retirement. Class History The Class of 62 began its career as freshmen in rooms sixteen and eighteen'with Mr. Rhodes and Mrs. Lukasiewicz as advisors. There were forty-eight that year and we all looked forward to our next four years together. The one outstanding event of the year was our first dance. It was the nicest and mostdecorated round and square dance any class had ever staged. At least, we thought so. We began our sophomore year with forty-three class members in rooms fourteen and fifteen with Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Gregory as advisors. We had two dances that year, and both were successes. We also made progress on the '61 Yearbook and received a colored picture on the inside cover for our efforts, smashing a tradition by using a new photographer. At the end of the year, Mr. Rhodes stopped as home room teacher but continued as part-time advisor. We advanced into our Junior Year, all forty-two of us herded into room fourteen with Mr. Gregory as our lone leader. The year was filled with activity with much credit for this going to Mr. Gregory who kept everyone going. This was our busiest year with work at basketball games and yearbook meetings. It was filled with events such as the Father-Daughter Banquet, the Junior-Senior Banquet, dances, a card party, and our Junior Prom, La Chanson D'amour or Song of Love. ” We had other extras to raise money such as selling magazines, Christmas cards and basketball buttons. Someone was selling something all the time. Every classman was a vendor of some sort. This year was a big success for us. We made it bigger by buying our school gift ahead of time so that we could profit from it in our senior year. It was a big disappointment when we learned of Mr. Gregory's leaving for California. We began our Senior Year numbering thirty-eight. Mr. Sutton and Mrs. Estus were advisors. Highlights of the year were: The Senior Ball, Fantasy in Frost, a New York City trip, the Junior-Senior Banquet, and, above all, graduation! Prophecy of the We look far into the future to the year 1982 and are not surprised to discover that the United States government has asked that fabulous, courageous, intelligent Class of 1962 at Galway Central High to be the occupants of an experimental Utopia. As we enter the town square, we see a large crowd gathering. We listen in and find that GARRY BARTH is being cited with the outstanding citizen of the year award. Bank President JIM LOCKWOOD is making the presentation of the award. We move on and try to sneak in the back door of the Utopian Opera House, but are nabbed by PAT WRIGHT and forced to buy a ticket from ELEANOR KEDZIERSKI. We find a comfortable seat as the music begins. The first selection is a stereophonic ping-pong match directed by DAVE SUTTON and backed up by his stereo hi-fi. We are then disappointed, for we find out that the famous SITTERLY violins are not going to appear. (It seems Honest Roger has been doing a booming business because of a rise in the cat population.) The next number is a ballet performed by JUDI MUSOLFF. As that brilliant conductor GARY SPEANBURG raises his baton, Judi begins her dance to that stirring song, Flight of the Bull Moose. A hush falls over the crowd as the feature attraction of the evening appears on stage. MARILYN ARMITAGE bellows out her great vocal, Stout Hearted Men. We tear ourselves away from this stirring performance and travel on to the Utopia Broadcasting Company. The first radio personality we encounter is CAROL GAURA, star of ROBERT SUSS's Laugh Along With Suss show. We stop for a moment to listen to sports-broadcaster PETER JACOBS giving the latest from Santa Anita and the Saratoga racing forms. We finally leave to the melodious music of the Ju Boys Band. Just stepping out on the street we see several women wearing the new JANE CLAY-POOL hair style called the Yul Bryner look. Class of 962 We pick up the HOLTSLANDER Journal and read that GERALD SCHRADER has moved to Spain, where he has become a matador. We also notice a gossip column on the last page by that woman-around-town, MARIANNE ELLSWORTH. Next we visit the Gregory Memorial Hospital. RITA ARMITAGE has landed her first job as nurse there, while PAT MITCHELL, also a nurse, has landed her first intern. Nurse JO-ANN FOLEY is assisting surgeon NORM MURAUSKAS as he performs a nationally televised brain operation, which he learned from reading a pocketbook edition of BRAIN SURGERY MADE EASY. There is a protest from the patient, but Lawyer JOHN BOSHART argues that, since Murauskas amputated both of the patient's legs, the client does not have a leg to stand We leave the hospital and run into JACKIE LYONS. She tells us she went to make her fortune in the outside world but came back by popular demand ... of the outside world. We pass through the downtown section and go by the J. McCHESNEY department store. It helps support the town organizations out of its large coffers. We pull up to the town hall and sit inside to visit with Mayor JOHN SKORNY, who was elected by an overshelming minority. We see his Press Secretary LINDA GRANT discussing the coming election with John’s campaign manager ART WELSH. As we step out of the hall we see those two business tycoons DICK SMITH adn BILL CHAMPAGNE, owners of the Utopian Business International. We go in the Post Office to mail a letter and meet MALE clerk NADINE McCON-CHIE. Postmaster General LINDA SHERMAN is talking to her mailman, CARROLL HOUGHTON. As we pass the museum, we hear artist ELEONORE ADAMOSCHEK yelling at owner KATHY INGRAHAM for hanging one of her paintings upside down. We look up and notice that RON CHERNIK is high in the sky above us, kept up there by his anti-gravity belt. The city, taking advantage of this, has given him his trombone so he can play Night Train while he is up there. This way he serves as the city beacon. And now, as we regretfully depart, we notice that on each corner there is a naval reservist with his shotgun: RAY LANFEAR, DICKPATEREK, PETE TRAIDER, and LES McELHINEY. We sleep well. Our Navy Reserve is awake. favorites MOST MUSICAL - RON CHERNIK MOST POPULAR SENIORS - GARY SPEANBURG UNDA GRANT MOST ATHLETIC - JOHN BOSH ART MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED - GARY SPEANBURG fantasy in faost The Senior Ball combined February's wimryness and its Valentine air in an atmosphere of crystallized hearts, icicles and snowmen in a Fantasy in Frost. A major weakness, according to coach Mealy, was the pitching staff. This he attributed to an insufficient amount of baseball played in the grades and in junior high school. FIRST ROW, LtoR: J.
