Take me out to the crowd, Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks, I don't care if we never get back I This lilting tune was popular 20 years ago, and there is reason to believe it will still be going strong 20 years from now. Let's follow it to the Little League ball park in the prosperous suburb of Galway, New York, on a spring afternoon in 1981.............. VICE PRESIDENT MR. Now you 'll never have any laughs. ..............This stadium was built by the successful members of the class of 1961 as a tribute to their long-suffering sponsor, Mr. Sutton. We settled down on abominably hard bleachers (manufactured by the L. E. Bascom Seating Co.) with the prospect of a rousing battle between the Parkis Mills Pirates and the York Town Yankees. Our ideas of watching the game are soon given up with a sigh of resignation for we have the good fortune to be sitting next to the chatty old maid who writes the gossip column for the local Galway Gazette, and she keeps battering our ears with pleasant observations.............. ..............The paper's editor, Jane Sturtevant, wanted to get this noisy journalist out of her hair for a few hours, and so she sent her to cover the game. Our newshound has been mumbling to herself. Now she shifts into high gear and remarks to us: You'd think that referee George Jackowski could get the game started on time. After all, this is the first game and . . . Ah-hal • . . . Unless my binoculars are cockeyed, there are two stoutish men over there wearing bermuda shorts! The 11-year-old star pitcher, son of the former Nora Whitney, wizzes the first ball over the plate as the almost forgotten journalist explodes an elbow in our ribs. Look, quick, over therel the 17th row, the 63rd seat. We are still counting (46,47, 48) as the first home run of the game is hit. I've got itl I've got itl a trim housewife, whom we know as Sandra Millington exclaims. She is very disappointed when she learns she must return the home-run ball to the Yanks' manager, Fred Euler............. ............At last we have found the 63rd seat in the 17th row. Keep smiling. ............The local P.T.A. women have the concessions and are selling peanuts and cracker- jacks. Sandra Hatala is covering this side of the stadium while Nellie Kondrat's booming voice can be heard yelling, Popcorn! Peanuts! all over the other side. The sociable newswoman offers us some of her popcorn and comments, Did you know that the K and S Ball Co. tried to get the team's managers to use their revolutionary new rectangular ball today? The company's founders, Dave Klementowski and Mitch Stachnik designed this ball with the idea that, since rectangular black board erasers flew so well in the classroom, the same shape might work well on the ball field........... ............But Marcia Boehne, the official field nurse, vetoed the idea of such a trial on the grounds that it was too dangerous. The corners of the ball might dent the bats, not to mention the children’s heads. Speaking of children, we notice that Joan Sherman, running for re-election as U.S. Congresswoman from this district, is out to get the student vote. She is now shaking hands with the members of a fourth grade class which is visiting the stadium on a field trip. A tinkle of glass returns our attention to the game. A home run ball has just gone over the fence into Sally Eaton's greenhouse across the street. Sally's insurance agent, Gerald Zabawa, calmly marks the accident off as a geographic hazard of his client's business. Luckily, that ball didn't go through the interplanetary communications center which is also across the street. Michael Teachout, the business tycoon, has threatened to leave Earth if another Little League ball interferes with his view of the Miss Universe Contest being held on Venus. ..............(Ever since a local girl. Dale Denison, won second place Mike has never missed the contest.) Again the gossip writer explodes at our elbow. Quick! Gimme my binoculars! I think I just spotted Sharon Sherman and her latest boyfriend! What a scoop!” The ball game has just come to a screeching ( by the fans) halt (the score was tied). If the opening baseball game of 1981 sounds like a three-ring circus, please remember that a lot can happen in 20 years. By that time the members of the class of 1961 will have made their mark on the universe............ The class of ’61 has gone down in enrollment but progressively upward in accomplishment. We began our freshman year under the watchful eye of Mr. Sutton and Miss Halloran. As class officers we elected Paul Zajaceskowski. president; Marcia Boehne. vice-president; Karen Sutton, secretary; and Joan Sherman, treasurer. Our student council members were Lorraine Pilon and Dan D'Alessandro. There were 52 of us sponsoring our one dance, the big event of the year. Our junior year was full of memorable happenings. There were 37 classmates, all in room 8 under the guardianship of Mr. Sutton. We had three dances besides the Prom, Moonlight and Roses, sold refreshments at basketball games and ran a check room for extra money. We were responsible for the yearbook, which in our opinion was the best Galway had ever seen. It was late, but worth waiting for. On Moving-Up Day, we were the first juniors in Galway’s history to win the banner Our class officers were Sherry Sherman, president; Paul Zajaceskowski, vice-president; Dale Denison, secretary; and Joan Sherman, treasurer. Lorraine and Jerry were student council members. In our sophomore year, there were 40 eager students in rooms 8 and 15. with Mr. Sutton and Mr. Gregory as wardens. Mr. Sutton was our class advisor. We chose Sherry Sherman, president; Marcia Boehne, vice-president; Patty Quinn, secretary; and Joan Sherman, treasurer. Lorraine and Dan were again student council members. We had two wonderful roller skating parties. 2t6 We entered our senior year with 34 eager intellectuals, all in room 8. We had three dances besides the Senior Ball Over the Rainbow. George Jackowski was president, and LoAnn Bennett was our secretary. Joan Sherman still managed our finances. Carolyn Dropper and Doug Arnold were student council members. fOt CLASSES SEATED, L to R: N. McConchie, D. Thornton, J. Claypool, J. Lyons, P. Mitchell, E. Kedzierski, J. Musolff, P. Along with their 8, 000 colleagues across the state, Galway Yorkers engage in projects and activities which are designed to increase their knowledge of state and local history and to preserve the past so that young people of the future may enjoy it and learn from it. The Yorker Council is composed of the presidents and treasurers from each Yorker Club and two elected council representatives from each club. The group coordinates the All-Yorker activities such as the annual convention project. Officers for 1960-61 are Bonnie Michelfelder, president; Sharon Euler, vice-president; Carol Michelfelder, secretary; and Diane Davidson, treasurer. Representatives to the Capital City District zone were Joan Sherman and Gary Speanburg. Joseph Henry Yorkers, our senior club, has participated in all of the general Yorker activities of this year, including the P.T.A. County Fair, the paper drives, and the All-Yorker convention project of using marionettes to depict scenes from New York state folklore. When this book appears, they will be deep in plans for their own chapter two-day trip immediately following the closing of school. The club also made a good start on their Costume Room project. Officers are Ronnie Michelfelder, president; Rita Armitage, vice-president; Lorraine Pilon, secretary; and Gary Speanburg, treasurer. This past year the Elizabeth Kelly II Yorkers have been very active. They produced a program that was presented at the P.T.A. Fair in November. We worked on convention project, paper drives, and various social programs. Officers are Nancy Pitches, president; Todd Rohling, vice-president; Peggy Shoutis, secretary; and Diane Davidson, treasurer. The Glowegee III Yorkers worked in the paper drives and the P.T.A. Fair. The group worked on the state project for convention and on a project to earn money for the club. It also visited Cooperstown and Fort Ticonderoga, Fort William Henry, and the new Whitehall Museum. Officers are Mary Ann Watrobski, president; David Sherman, vice-president; Michael Suits, secretary; and Neal Evans, treasurer. The Seven Scots III had a busy year. Activities included a get-acquainted party, trips to Albany and Cooperstown, hours of work on paper drives, chapter projects, the P.T.A. County Fair, and the All-Yorker convention exhibit. Officers are Bill Michelfelder, president; Skip Shoutis, vice-president; Bonnie Hathaway, secretary; and Laura Kaplanowski, treasurer. B I C f a •K e c t t C 6 1st ROW, L to R: D. Davidson, N. We just weren't equipped with enough ball-players to cope with our league this year. The boys, however, played their best. We will have several boys back from last year and can only hope for the best. Socce The 1960 Soccer Team was more improved over the 1959 team than its won-lost record would indicate. Of the 8 games lost, 5 were lost by only one goal. The boys played well and had much spirit and a desire to win. Each boy did well under Co-Captains George Jackowski and Doug Sowle. Inexperience in the backfield caused many headaches, but the backs improved enough to give us a good defense late in the season. Personally, I believe this was the finest group of boys I have worked with in several years. I enjoyed every minute of the season. We hope to do better in 1961. - Coach Mealy RECORD WINS LOSSES TIES 1 8 5 GALWAY OPPONENT GALWAY OPPONENT Schalmont 2 2 Perth 2 2 Northville 0 6 Northville 6 12 Wells 2 4 Wells 0 2 Schalmont 2 2 Mayfield 2 5 Mayfield 0 0 Fonda 2 4 Fonda 0 2 Broadalbin 2 2 Broadalbin 2 8 Perth 10 4 1st ROW, L to R: A.
