CLASS HISTORY We, the class of '53, entered the freshman ranks four seemingly-short years ago with twenty-seven members. We didn't do anything in the way of activities the first year. I guess we were too busy getting acquainted with high school. We elected class officers, however, and they were: Dick Mansfield, President; Nelson Reichel, Vice President; Ed Palmer, Secretary and Treasurer. The boys took over the class that year, but Ruth Armer represented the girls by being elected for Student Council. Her associate on the council was Ed Palmer—my goodness, Eddie was a busy boy, wasn’t he? In our Sophomore year we did not elect any class officers, but we elected Student Council members: Anna Manas and Nelson Reichel. Our class published the Galwaynian that year. By the time spring rolled around we had lost about ten of our members, reducing our class to seventeen. The next year (our Junior year), we made up our inactivity of the two previous years. First, we elected Anna Manas, Class President; Barbara Suss, Vice President; Ruth Armer, Secretary; and Elizabeth Morris, Treasurer. Then we elected Sherry Stockheim and Nelson Reichel to Student Council. After that we had a roller skating party and then a hayride. Besides that we published the Galwaynian and worked on the yearbook, which was our job to put out. When March arrived, we held a Spring dance, which turned out to be the record event of the year. Finally, with holes in our heads and our hands in our pockets, we graduated into the next class and became what is known as Seniors. This is our last year and it seems hard to believe. Five more of our members left us in our third year and this year Betty Garrison joined us; so now we are thirteen. We have elected officers: Nelson Reichel, President; Barbara Suss, Vice President; Anna Manas, Secretary; and Elizabeth Morris, Treasurer. Sherry Stockheim and David Weaver are Student Council members. We have already held a spaghetti supper and throughout the year we will probably keep busy. In April we will go on our long awaited Senior trip and in June we will graduate. When the last echoes of our footsteps in the halls of this school die away, we may be forgotten. But we will not forget all the fun we've had and the scrapes we have gotten into; the education we received; our teachers and friends, and the four wonderful years of high school. Well, that's it. Goodby and good luck! CLASS WILL We, the class of 1953 of Galway Central School of the village of Galway in the county of Saratoga and state of New York; being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this our last Will and Testament, in manner following, that is to say; First, DANNY GREZB1EN leaves his most precious possession, his red hair, to Marilyn Hickey, whom he hopes will cherish and wear it as proudly as he did. Second, BETTY GARRISON sadly relinquishes her library job to a junior member of the Library Club who feels capable of handling this important position. Third, ANNA MANAS surrenders her height of all five feet, two inches, to Lois Wood so that she will be able to wear high heels. Fourth, DICK MANSFIELD, though he mourns the fact, wills his ever lovin’ plaid hat and vest to Mr. Zoot Suit of the class of ’54, Ross Christie. Fifth, EDDIE PALMER leaves his athletic ability to Pete Wintersteen, and regrets that he is unable to leave Barb to him, also. But, there are some things people just won’t give up! Sixth, NELSON RE1CHEL bequeaths his towering height to Miss Wimbert so she can fulfill her secret desire to play center on The Golden Eagles. Seventh, BARB SUSS wills her trunk of giggles to the noisiest member of the junior class, Emma Fuller, in hopes that she will carry on the fine tradition of at least ten giggles per class. Eighth, SHERRY STOCKHEIM leaves her wit to Joan Landry and Shirley Palmateer. Now you can be half-wits, girls! Ninth, LIZ MORRIS passes on her treasurer’s job to Judy Morehouse. With this bequest also goes a year's supply of aspirin. Tenth, DAVE WEAVER leaves his supply of locker keys to anyone who can keep track of them. He feels that Olaf should be forewarned of this impending situation! Eleventh, HELEN WILCOX wills her history books to Mr. Simmons, but then, doesn't everybody? Twelfth, To Anna Lee goes MARLENE WARD’S big enough for two gym suit. It’s real cozy on winter days.... Thirteenth, STACIA WALKOWICZ bequeaths her cheering sweater to Joyce Clark, whom she knows will carry on the fine work of the Varsity Cheerleaders. Fourteenth, We leave our spirit and loyalty for our school to all the present classes and to those who will come after them in the years to come. In particular, our best wishes go to the junior class. Lastly we hereby appoint the junior class staff of the Galway Piper executers of this, our last Will and Testament; hereby revoking all former wills by us made. In Witness Whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names the day of December First in the year of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-two. THE CLASS OF 1953 CLASS PROPHECY Gather 'round, my friends, and climb upon my magic carpet, while we take a trip into the future and see what has happened to the class of '53. As we circle over the Mississippi, we spy a houseboat stuck in the mud. A closer look shows us STAC1A standing on the deck. We never thought BILL'S going into the navy would make you go up the river, Stay! Approaching West Milton, we hear an awful noise coming from the Grange Hall. Ah, ha! I knew it. MARLENE is now a square dance teacher and she's doing As We Go Marching to Georgia. They sound like they're taking it seriously. That place down yonder is UCLA. Guess who's head coach there now? None other than DICK MANSFIELD. His team has won the national basketball and football championships, and is now on their way to capturing the tiddly-wink cup. We knew you'd be a success, Dick! In Los Angeles we find BETTY hard at work keeping the records for the So Long Chinese Import Co. Betty always claimed Mrs. Fahey's bookkeeping would pay off, and she was so right. Flying low over New York enables us to find ANNA MANAS. All she ever wanted to be was a lil ol' medical secretary, and here she is a famous brain surgeon. Anna often goes to Madison Square Garden to watch her favorite basketball star playing with the Minneapolis Fakers. She admits that he looks slightly peculiar running around on stilts, but it was the only way EDDIE could find to solve the problem of getting to be 6' 6”! Now we're heading south over Brazil, for that’s where DANNY is. He graduated with such high honors from his night school auto mechanics’ course, that he invented a car with a new kind of motor. The only thing he forgot was a way to stop it, so his trial run took him this far. We don't find him complaining, though! Must be the good food. Finding ourselves quite tired, we decide to start for home, with one last stop at Barkersville. Hang on to your seats; the air is getting bumpy. I wonder... Oh, oh, I knew it! BARBARA is running a chicken farm, and the air is bumpy from the giggles coming up from the hen houses. She even has the chickens doing it now. Barb makes a nice profit selling her fowls to her old school chum, HELEN, who is now managing Packer's store. Helen has made quite a few improvements, too. There's a gadget that grabs people as they go by, pulls them inside, gives them six boxes of Little Crunchies, takes three dollars out of their pocket, and throws them outside again. We always knew you had a good head for business, Helen! As we climb off our magic carpet, you may be wondering what has happened to SHERRY. Well, who do you think was steering our carpet? Once a wizard,” always a wizard ! And so we find that the class of '53 has certainly fulfilled all the prophecies made about them way back in the early twentieth century. Now our guide must leave us, for more classes are approaching for a look into the future. A B C 'S Alert..........................................MR. The boys finished the season with a record of no wins and ten defeats. The four county league teams that the boys had played in the past were forced to leave the league in soccer, leaving Galway with only a few other teams to play. Coach Mealey went through a great deal of trouble trying to get other teams of higher classes to play the boys. The team was led by senior Ed Palmer this year. Other seniors playing in their last soccer game this year were Dick Mansfield, Nelson Reichel, and Dan Grezben. We certainly will miss these four fine athletes next year. Left to right: Stacia Walkowicz, Captain; Marilyn Hickey, Joyce Clark, Barbara Suss, Co-captain, Alice Armer, Pat Faber. Varsity CHEERLEADERS Junior Varsity First row, left to right: Mildred Lendl, Captain; Shirley Palmateer, Cocaptain. Second row: Joyce Keller, JackieQuinn, Marianne Carnwick, Mary Howard. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The Galway Junior Varsity this year did very well by capturing second place in the league. The junior varsity was struck with some sickness causing them their defeat for the first place fight. The captain, who led his team this season, was Leon Hicks with 89 points. The other members of the team were: Danny Verklas, 86 points; Bob Young, 50 points; Spencer Jackson, 48 points; Jim Arnold, 14 points; Bob Lee, 33 points; Philip Arnold, 17 points; Bill Murauskas, 13 points; Douglas Van Wagnenen, 8 points; Joe Hatala, 2 points; Joe Downes, 2 points; Charles Jackson, 0 points. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year s basketball season with Coach Donald Mealy s team was one filled with hard luck and disappointing breaks. We had for the first time in Galway three players hitting over the century mark for the year s scoring. The players however were all seniors whom we will lose due to graduation. The total scoring for the year went as follows: Danny Grezbein, 133 points; Nelson Reichel, 113 points; Dick Mansfield, (capt.) 105; Edward Palmer, 86 points; Jim Mansfield, 64 points; Brian Mooney, 16 points; Ross Christie, 9 points; Peter Wintersteen, 9 points; Bill Harris, 3 points; William Carnrick, 2 points. Despite the supreme effort of Captain Ray Sherman, Dan Grezbein, Dick Mansfield, Charlie Quinlan, Nelson Reichel, Milton Lendl, Ed Palmer, Brian Mooney, Pete Wintersteen, Spencer Jackson, Bob Young, Danny Verklas, Harold Sherman, Jim hall, and Bill Murauskas, the season closed with three wins against seven defeats.
