Betty Bryan joined the marathon early in the year. The torrid pace proved too much for Sammy Bechdol and Omer Young. They stumbled and fell by the wayside after crossing the first few obstacles. By- nom Troyer and Nancy Otiker left us and joined a similar meet in Summerfield Florida, and Kokomo, Carl Williams gave the second call tor entrants in the sophomore meet and found that Carol Bresnahan Mel Dona- hue and Ralph Phillips wished to wear our colors. Student managers for the year were Jim McCoy presidentg Dick Irwin vice-president Melvin Armstrong treasurer Jim Bevington secretary- and Betty Bryan reporter. We met and conquered the serious problems of ordering class rings and initiating the freshmen. During the year Dick Irwin and Faye Savage were lost to Kokomo High School and Carolyn Hosier to the hurdle of matrimony. Bill Sh pley blew the whistle for the third big race Wel comed additions were Ronald Halsey Bonnie Merrell and Jean Fallon Student managers elected were Jim McCoy president James Bevington vice president Eileen Lake treasurer Betty Bryan secretary and Eugene Lake report er Three high hurdles that were gracefully passed were the class play Spookey Junction the junior senior recep tion at Veaches in Peru and the junior senior trip to Cin cinnatr Louisville etc The most pleasant jumps in this phase of the race were the zoo and the baseball game be tween the Cincinnati Reds and the St Louis Cardinals in Cincinnati the Brown Hotel and Churchill Downs in Louis ville and Marengo Cave and Indiana University 111 South ern Indiana The wear and tear of th educational pace left Carol Bresnahan Mel Donahue Jim Hodson and Jean Fallon prostrate on the turf. Andy Fernung called the roll for the fourth and final big race. Tom Cree had moved to Onward' however he decided to leave his adopted insurrectionists and returned at mid- term. Joretta Merrell joined the ranks of matrimony. The class elected as their student managers, Jim McCoy presi- dentg Ronald Halsey vice-president' Eileen Lake treasurer' and Betty Bryan secretary. The usual stumbling blocks were met and surpassed in admirable fashion. The school paper THE CARDINAL CORNER and the annual THE GALVESTONIAN were published. The annual magazine drive was completed with the largest per capita sales in the history of the school. The senior play was the pride and joy of the papas and mammas. Yes the class was successful in curricular as well as extracurricular activities. The Lake twins Ronald Halsey Jim McCoy James Beving- ton, and Emilee Rockwell hovered at the top of the class in an academic sense. On April 30, 1951, twenty proud seniors were awarded diplomas from Galveston High School. Page Fourteen
