LINCOLN GRADE SCHOOL HISTORY OF IACKSON TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS The proneers of Jackson Townshrp were mrndtul ot the values of educatlon and made early plan to crve thelr youth needed 1nstruct1on The irrst schoolhouse was bullt about 1844 on the farm ot Wlllram Stanley John M Jackson was the itrst teacher PIIOI to 1852 there were llttle publlc school funds and each d1SIIlCI erected bu1ld1ngs and hrred teachers trom publrc subscr1pt1on In the early seventres the trustee assumed complete control and placed the schools at equal dlstances throughout the townshrp In 1877 Jackson Township had eleven schoolhouses Thts number was further reduced untll rn 1907 there were but three burldmgs outsrde ot Galveston and Lmcoln Four wagons were employed at a cost of two dollars and irtty cents per day to transport the scholars to the central schools The trrst school rn Galveston was taught rn an old log house About 1885 a new frame schoolhouse was erected at a cost ot S2 500 In 1883 a new buck schoolhouse was erected at an expendrture of S6 000 and th1s hu1ld1ng was superseded by the present bulldlng at a cost ot 527 000 The Lmcoln bulldlng was burlt ln 1920 The communlty buxlt the gymnaslum 1n 1923 through publlc labor and donatlons Separate grade and hrgh schools were mamtalned at Lmcoln and Galveston untrl 1932 when the hrgh schools were unlted at Galveston The elementary schools were consolrdated at Lmcoln ln 1944 The greatest advancement has been made rn the currlculum held Gradually the system has moved away from the three H s and the classlcs to our present modern course of study Galveston Hrgh School now offers a VHIIEIY ot subyects hurlt around the needs ot our chrldren The currrculum rn cludes vocatronal home economlcs vocatronal agrlculture commerce and the academrc subyects There have been 788 graduated from the hlgh schools rn Jackson Townshlp The people ot the townshrp may take just prlde 1n her system of publrc schools whrch have gradually evolved from the IlISl round log cabm of one hundred and eleven years ago Page Sax S U . 1 1 . , , . 1 1 , . . 1 . . 1 1 1 '
