BASKETBALL Thirty green but willing candidates greeted their new coach, Max R. Kelley, in the initial workouts for the 1949-1950 edition of the Gal- veston Cardinal basketball machine. The new pilot looked his new charges over, rolled up his sleeves, and began to rebuild the graduation ridd'ed outfit. Ronnie Bone and Bob Patterson of the 1949 tourney team were joined by seniors Max Jones, Bill Salmons, Andy Ronk, and Bob Polk, Cther leading varsity candidates were Ronald Chambers, Connie Gerdes, joe Walker, .lim Hodson, Jim lVlcCoy, Toney Finney, Bob Long, Dick Ahrens, Craig Maze, Harold VerBryck, and Bill Garbert. The new team started slow and were rewarded on their fifth outing by a well earned victcry over Onward, After continued improvement, Kelley's charges again hit the victory trail and defeated Wfaverly for their second win before a large group of former letterman in the first annual G night. The new year found the spirit still high. and this was manifested by the rout of Metea in the 'first week following the Christmas vacation. The climax of the year came when our boys outplayed the Washington Hatchets all the way and 'upset the defending Sectional Champs 41 to 38. The season ended at Kokomo's Memorial Gymnasium with the Cardinals fighting Greentown to a standstill for the first half but losing out to the big Beavers in the second stanza. Sophomore Ronnie Bone and hard driving Andy Ronk we-re mentioned by the Kokomo Tribune for their fine play in the sec- tional tourney. The school can feel proud of the fighting spirit shown by the boys and their Coach. They may not have won so many games as some pre- vious teams, but there is no doubt they gained many lessons that will be useful in later life, The future is bright and the senior boys wish the under-classmcn well in future years.
