The Gulf of Siam was the place where we concluded our patrol of the Vietnamese coast. We pumped more shells into the jungle 150 miles southwest of Saigon, sinking two junks and damaging a loading area. As often happened during our gunfire support missions, we found ourselves in water so shallow that a sounding lead was used to determine depth. In five days we had hit Viet Cong supply areas, headquarters, ammunition dumps, training areas, encampments, and communi- cations stations. Along the thousand-mile coastline of the Republic of Vietnam the fire and thunder of six-inch naval guns had be- come familiar things. 47
