We want you to go back with us a minute or two while we relate to you the most outstanding. ln the fall of i936 another class started kindergarten under the supervision of Miss Sohrn. Of the twenty-one who began together, one half were able to keep pace with one another through the thirteen years. They are: Dolores Michaelsen, Arlene Gries, Dolores Lemke, James Langland, Robert Vollmar, Don Vollmar, Val Gene Moeller, Loren Lorenzen, Elwayne Maser, Floyd Soseman, and Harold Schubert. After a year of ABC's and a little disciplining we first directed our little footsteps to the new building, where, through the efforts of Miss Gray, we were introduced to our first lessons in readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic. These we passed with flying colors. The fun, it seemed, had only begun. Each day Miss Glorfeld held oral reading classes for the fairies and brownies in the little red chairs at the front of the room. Back in the old building again we enrolled in the third grade. Our fun had now vanished and it was down to brass tacks under the guidance of Miss Manteufel. But there is always more to learn, so up a flight of stairs where, under direction of Miss Steig, we got our first taste of six-weeks' tests and proved to her we had a memory longer than our nose. We enjoyed the superiority of Miss Edwards and it was smooth sail- ing through grade five. lt was under Miss Kitchen that life became more complicated. After learning that our head was put on our shoulders for a purpose and after a year of hard studies, we became members of Junior High school. These were enjoyable years under Misses Parry and Johnson. Our greatest achievements were our two plays, The Knave of Hearts and America on Parade. We also started an English Club in eighth grade. Then came that most dreaded year. Freshmen and initiation. But we faced those hard-fighting seniors and survived initiation. Our sopho- more year was about the same as our freshmen except that we considered ourselves a little wiser. Another summer rolled by and we became juniors. This was a busy and eventful year. Preparations were made for the big Jr.-Sr. Prom. The time came when we were to enroll in old Holstein High for the last time and as seniors we administered the initiation jolts just as we had received them. That is the history of the Class of '48, As we look over these glorious days, we can honestly say that we will never regret them and we want to thank our parents for giving us such an opportunity. We'll not forget our teachers who have so patiently taught us and prepared us for stepping out into the world. As we proceed through life, we will remember Not failure, but low aim is crime. Vice-President Dean Vollmar --- ---Secretary and Treasurer With Miss Forstrom as our class sponsor, our first big decision of the year was to determine whether we would sell refreshments at athletic events or not. We voted on the matter and since everyone was in favor of it, we drew up plans to sell popcorn, apples, and pop at the games. On September l9, we opened our two-week magazine drive. During this time we sold over 3,5750 in magazine subscriptions for a magazine com- pany. The commissions received from these sales helped pay for our prom, The Juniors then entertained the high school at their dance on Sep- tember 3O. We danced to record music and then the class served refresh- ments. We chose our class rings early in the new semester. They are to have ci pirate-head setting on various types of stones. The highlight of the year is, as always, the Junior-Senior Prom. as 2 a Y S .. 'PSX Ai.. 4 ' , In I 31.4.2 5., -gqgi.3.AQ.,g:I3s, 1 .5 AA if A A A A Ai A. V ice-President Joelle Lemke .... --- Secretary and Treasurer As the cold grey dawn streaked across the sky on September 5, l947, the Freshmen prepared for their annual initiation. The seniors were at school waiting to greet them, paddles in hand. The biggest event of their school career was over at noon. From that day on they tried to please the upper classmen. On No- vember 7, they held their first dance in honor of the seniors, who had been so kind to them during the first few weeks of school. lt was a blue-jean dance and everyone came dressed for the occasion. They showed good sportsmanship and talent in their achievements throughout the year, and from their ranks we except some good students, athletes, and musicians. vw. Everyone took part in the operetta, The Magi's Gift, which was presented in December under the di- rection ot Mrs. Kuchel. We played both football and basketball this year. The teams were in- spired by eight cheer leaders: Donna Lu Conover, Shirley Daugaard. Nancy Nelson, Normadyne Weiland, Kenneth Goettsch, Billy Schulz, Lyle Johnston, and Bob Batho. We began working tor the Ida County Spelling contest early this year as the contest was held in February. Our representative was Shirley Daugaard. Director L- Mary Ann Hansohn This play was presented by the Senior Class, under the direction of Mrs. Short, on April l3, l948, in the Holstein gymnasium. - The Walkers are an average American family except for one thing, they have three dateable daughters. Emily, a comical l5 year old, is so afraid she will end up being an old maid, she talks Harley Allen, a naive youngster of l6, into an engagement. She can really see no harm in this because after all, Anna, her bosom friend, wears boys' sweaters and her two sisters, Pat and Mary, go steady. This serious engagement 'is soon forgotten, however, when Lester Gray, son of a corrupt politician, asks her for a date. Emily's father and Harley's father are working to put Assemblyman Gray out of office, When Emily is found with Lester, after Lester's hofneznade ialopy breaks down with the license number of Mr. Allen's car on it, it certainly causes some excitement. Officer Benson, although he is a conscientious policeman, lets Emily and Harley go but takes Lester to headquarters for breaking a few traffic rules.
