Senior Treasure Chest of Memories As we, The Class of '46, prepare to leave these halls, We open wide our Memory Chest to see what it recalls. Such wealth pours out from every side, that gold could not atone For all the hours of comradeship and pleasure we have known. September, Nineteen thirty-three, our schooling's just begun, Miss Sohrn believes in teaching us that life is not all fun. She teaches us to read and write, to color, cut, and draw: To whisper, cheat or pinch, we find, is here against the law. The next two years Miss Glorfield and Miss Gray take ns in hand- Students come and students go from out our little band, But Meredith, Shirley, Mary Anne, Auggie Goettsch, and Jack Who began together that first day always wander back. Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade hold a store of gems we won't forget. Parties, picnics, plays, and hikes were such great fun, and yet, The greatest joy in those three years, outshining all the rest, Was the friendship of Francine Edwards, the teacher we loved best. From Sixth grade into Junior high, we proudly made our way. We crammed each day with fun and work for we had not long to stay. The crowning peak, of course you know, is the banquet served in style, But always we were anxiously awaiting our next mile. At last it came, Ah, fatal day when Freshmen eam their rights! By red streaked faces, baggy clothes, and chilly water fights. The smallest class we've had in years, we heard the people say, But we had will and so we proved, there always is a way. As juniors we just overflowed with energy and plans To earn the money, do the things the Junior prom demands. So when the prom took place at last, one balmy, moonlight night, The Rainbow theme and swirling skirts filled hearts with sheer delight. But now we put back all the gems, and close our treasure chest, Our thoughts fly on to future years that hold the final test. If the way grows rugged, lift your head and hold this shield, Our '46 class motto. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield! Mary Anne Kahl 12
