Senior Treasure Chest of Memories As we, The Class of '46, prepare to leave these halls, We open wide our Memory Chest to see what it recalls. Such wealth pours out from every side, that gold could not atone For all the hours of comradeship and pleasure we have known. September, Nineteen thirty-three, our schooling's just begun, Miss Sohrn believes in teaching us that life is not all fun. She teaches us to read and write, to color, cut, and draw: To whisper, cheat or pinch, we find, is here against the law. The next two years Miss Glorfield and Miss Gray take ns in hand- Students come and students go from out our little band, But Meredith, Shirley, Mary Anne, Auggie Goettsch, and Jack Who began together that first day always wander back. Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade hold a store of gems we won't forget. Parties, picnics, plays, and hikes were such great fun, and yet, The greatest joy in those three years, outshining all the rest, Was the friendship of Francine Edwards, the teacher we loved best. From Sixth grade into Junior high, we proudly made our way. We crammed each day with fun and work for we had not long to stay. The crowning peak, of course you know, is the banquet served in style, But always we were anxiously awaiting our next mile. At last it came, Ah, fatal day when Freshmen eam their rights! By red streaked faces, baggy clothes, and chilly water fights. The smallest class we've had in years, we heard the people say, But we had will and so we proved, there always is a way. As juniors we just overflowed with energy and plans To earn the money, do the things the Junior prom demands. So when the prom took place at last, one balmy, moonlight night, The Rainbow theme and swirling skirts filled hearts with sheer delight. But now we put back all the gems, and close our treasure chest, Our thoughts fly on to future years that hold the final test. If the way grows rugged, lift your head and hold this shield, Our '46 class motto. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield! Mary Anne Kahl 12 , I Here s To You--! You Can Always Tell a Freshman As the green Freshmen trudged up the third flight of stairs, a new life was in store for them. After getting adjusted to new faces. books. and working conditions, they began the task of earning grades and pleasing the upper classmen. You can always tell a Freshman By his eagemess to please. You can always tell a Fresman By his lack of social ease. You can always tell a Freshman By his innocence sublime, You can always tell a Freshman But just give him a little time. After a month or so elapsed. the dreaded Initiation Day finally came. Dressed in ridiculous costumes, the Freshmen came to school, not knowing what was in store for them. After a day of foolish stunts and hard-hitting paddles, the Freshmen became full-fledged members of Holstein High School. From then on they continued with their work, taking time out now and then to help out the football and basketball teams, and contributing their share of school spirit. The Freshmen also gave a retum party for their beloved seniors, in return for the Initiation Dance. All this while, the innocent Freshmen were learning the ways of high school life, and becoming an important addition to it. They showed good sportsmanship and pleasing personalities, and now as the year is about to come to a close. they will have advanced another important step and will no longer be the green Freshmen. 20 CQZifQ6ZjfL9gA Q T' G Je 5 I X X ' XE' 6mm ff VJ, EY? f K X L-' x L X X -f 7 MX -Y ' lx SX j,,2Mil l IIINIQIQ I-IIGI-I ACTIVITIES The high light of this year's junior high activities was the operetta Sunny of Sunnyside , presented in November. Nearly everyone participated, and after a great deal of hard work under the direction of Mis Herzberg, Mis Zell. and Mrs. Christie. it received a large turn-out. To celebrate our hard earned succes, we had a party in the gymnasium. Next in importance were our junior high basketball games. In spite of good, clean playing and a spirited cheering section our games were lost to Battle Creek and Ida Grove. In February we began work for the spelling contest. Jeanne Kolb won the written. and Evelyn Gebers won the oral, making both girls-eligible for the county contest in March. I We were invited throughout the year to numerous high school dances, big events for all of us. Hallowe'en and Christmas were celebrated this year by parties, which were en- joyed by all. After weeks of endles practice, our first game was in sight. The first twelve, picked according to their ability, were given suits. In our first game. we ended up with a tie against Schaller, and in the second. Quimby took top honors over Holstein on their home floor. At the Coaches' Clinic on December l. we lost to an unknown Petersen sextet. The next five games were victories on our side with Correctionville' Odebolt, Anthon. and Quimby falling to our girls who now are gaining in speed and accuracy. Next was the Maple Valley Tournament. in which Galva took the meet. knocking us out in the first round. In a return game on our home floor the Piratettes avenged their earlier beating by an exciting 2 point win. Shirley managed to sink the bucket in the last 20 seconds. The Ida County Toumament held at Ida Grove now beckoned to our girls. In the first stanza, Arthur fought a nip and tuck battle against us. At the end Holstein led by one point, but a foul was called on us as the buzzer rang, and Arthur, making the free throw,- tied the game. After a hectic 3 minutes overtime, Mary Anne found the basket to break the tie. In the finals Galva again bowed to the Holstein sextette, by l point. giving us the title, Champs of Ida County . Q Shirley Stoneking, Mary Anne Kahl, Betty Bagenstos, and Phylis Bochmann were picked for the first team of Ida County by the attending coaches. Our retum game with Odebolt was an easy victory to our determined sextette. SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT AT ANTHON Our first game was with an inexperienced Mapleton team who fell easily. The second team played half the game, saving the regulars for the next nights. Quimby and Anthon were stopped by the spectacular guarding of Betty, Myrt. and Phyllis, making us eligible for the District Tournament. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT AT SCHALLER Holstein met the powerful Nemaha outfit in the first round. Despite the fact Mike Michaelsen finally found herself, we bowed to the District winners. With the successful shooting of Shirley Stoneking' Mary Anne Kahl, and Delores Michealsen and the capable guarding of Myrtle Godbersen. Betty Bagenstos, Phyllis Bochmann and Anna Lembcke, our team ended with a good record-12 victories, 4 losses and l tie. They participated in 4 tournaments as well as the B. B. Clinic in Correctionville. We have to our credit 2 trophies, earned in the County and Sectional Toumaments. Throughout the season, the team showed good sportmanship and fair play. Only two seniors, Mary Anne and Shirley, will be lost from the squad through graduation. 36 Summary of Boys' Basketball for 1945-'46 The Black Pirates opened their season with a bang, stepping over Schaller and Quimby. In the third game with Correctionville, we were slowed down. A powerful Danbury team proved too big an obstacle, especially with Lomy Lor- enzen unable to play. The Odebolt quintet next served us a defeat. The game with Anthon was ours. but Correctionville again proved too much. After successfully clipping Quimby a second time, we fell before Galva, then pulled ahead of Kingsley. Alta was our next victim before Danbury again took top honors. In compensation for an earlier beating, we trimmed Odebolt, then went on to take over Battle Creek. MAPLE VALLEY TOURNAMENT Our boys rnoved into the finals, taking- out Battle Creek and Kingsley in fine shape. Although they came back strong after a poor first half, they couldn't quite connect enough points so the runner-up plaque was ours. IDA GROVE TOURNAMENT If the first half had been as good as the second, things might have been different. As it was, Galva squeezed by to eliminate the Pirates in the first canto. SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT . For a second time Odebolt out-scored us to finish up the season with 10 wins and 9 losses. Jack Leinbaugh and Auggie Goettsch are the only seniors on the squad. Next year's team ought to go far. 37 UTM 1946 HOLSTEIN RELAYS 1945 HOLSTEIN RELAYS TRACK Holstein ended a successful season in track by winning four trophies in the follow- ing events: 880 Class B at Sac City: Mile Relay Class B at Sac City: Medley Class B. and the Maple Valley Conference trophy. September 24, 1945 Moonlight, a wagon load of fragrant hay and the gay laughter of about 30 football boys and girls, made up the contents of the football hayride. After riding over the country side, a weiner roast was the last event of interest for the night. September 26, 1945 X Freshmen were duly initiated by the powerful Seniors. Dressed in pajamas and long-legged underwear, they abided by the Senior paddles. Rolling peanuts with their noses, crawling under desks, bowing and feeding de- licious candy to every Senior made up the events of the moming. During the noon hour. with the aid of a drenching rain, the main square was scrubbed. In the evening the Seniors invited the High School to enjoy the program given by the new members of the high school-the green Freshmen and the new faculty members. September 26, 1945 The Ritz Music Makers entertained the students, taking their minds off their school work. October 12, 1945 No school because of Teachers' Meeting. October 19, 1945 Homecoming Football game. Promptly at 7:30, an effigy of Alta was burnt at the stake. Just as he blazed up. the football boys ran on to the field. determined to win. After several songs were sung around the burning embers, in the south field. the game proceeded. Flying orange and black pennants were seen everywhere. At the half, the band marched and presented the Queen of the Homecoming and her at- tendants at the press box. The queen, Shirley Stoneking, and her attendants. Mary Anne Kahl and Donne Wiese. were crowned and given honorable mention. To fulfill the success of the homecoming the boys won their game against Alta. October 29. 1945 Haboush, a Galilean shepherd, entertained the stu- dents with stories of Galilee. He also, demonstrated their language by taking the names of various students and writing them on the board. Certain questions were asked' 'and those answering received an autographed seashell. , November 20, 1945 ' Juniors entertained the high school with a school dance, for the purpose of making money for the forthcoming prom. November 22, 1945 Another vacation--Thanksgiving. December 21, 1945 High school had a Christmas grab bag, and a lovely tree adomed the front of the bare assembly. Each class afforded the students entertainment having to do with Christmas. The grab bag was opened by Henry Witt acting as Santa Claus, and many surprising gifts were opened. January 7, 1946 Christmas' vacation over and back to school we trudged. January 9, 1946 Pep Club entertained the high school and Junior high with a dance which was a great success. January 25, 1946 Freshmen gave a retum party for the Seniors, and much to the delight of the Seniors, they were admitted free. A delicious lunch was served and dancing continued until 9:30, when all Basketball boys and girls had to leave and go to bed to prepare for the coming tourna- ment. RAINBOW'S END PROM OF 45 On April 25, 1945, at 7:30 P. M., the Juniors and Seniors, dressed in formal gowns and suits, answered to the beckoning lights at the East entrance of the school house. The sign, Rainbow's End , in rainbow colored lights proved to lead to much fun any enjoyment. After entering the portals and checking evening wraps, the girls admired each other's forrnals, and corsages received from their escorts for the evening. Music strains from Jack Cole's band reached the ears of the dancers, and dance programs were soon filled out. The favorite song of the evening was Stardust , which was later dedicated to the Junior class. From eight to nine, parents and outsiders were allowed to sit in the balcony and watch the swirling couples below, envying their youth and gay laughter. Between dances, punch, coke, peanuts and potato chips were served at the Rainbow Bar in the hall, where six freshmen answered to the demands of the thirsty dancers. The hall contained couches, comfortable chairs. and lamps for the benefit of those not dancing. In the center of the gymnasium was a shining pot of gold, overflowing with golden coins. Soft lights shown through the rainbow streamers which fell into it. Later in the evening, Herman Lohafer and Joanne Hansen. the king and queen of the Senior class, were crowned. As an added attraction, there was a favor dance and everyone received a favor, which was a blue address book with H. H. S. in gold letters on its cover. . At curfew time, Jack Cole played The Star Spangled Banner . The clock struck twelve, and with reluctant sighs the Cinderellas and Princes turned once more to look back on an evening never to be forgotten. 46 EU!
