Each year had seen a steady improvement in Galva's football fortunes, and 1955 was the climax, a perfect record and the Bo-Coon championship. The 1955 Blue Devils simply overwhelmed their eight opponents. Their closest games, if they could be called close, were a 27-0 victory over Lake View, and a 34--7 pasting of Early, a team which had had a string of 25 consecutive wins. The Early game was, by all odds, the highlight of the season. Both teams were undefeated. Early was the defending conference champs, and the Blue Devils were out to avenge two previous hard fought defeats. In their second year under head Coach Bud Kyle, assisted this year by Wally Hamann, the Galva gridders compiled some truly amazing statistics. They out- scored their opponents 310 to 21. They rolled up 2,966 yards on the ground, close to two miles, and they picked up another 177 yards passing. Their opponents were held to a total of 787 yards total offense, or less than 100 yards average per game. The 1955 Blue Devils were a speedy, well balanced squad. They featured crisp blocking, good hard tackling, and a set of backs who could go all the way on any play. After their victory over Early, they were consistently ranked among the top class Il teams in Iowa in the Des Moines Register Poll. Although they were a team of stars. they were proud to see their fleet left half- back, Jerry Jensen, gain state wide recognition. Jerry was first in the entire state in total offense and in rushing, even though he carried the ball on fewer than ten plays per game. Jerry was selected on one of the Des Moines Register All-State Teams, the first Galva gridder thus honored. Galva High School and the town of Galva will never forget the 1955 Blue Devils. The names of Lease, Rasmussen, Grapevile, Jensen, Zabel, Webb, Ortner, Otto, Schulke, Winslow, and Voge, plus their able substitutes, will rank among the school's athletic immortals.
