The Galva girls basketball team this season was more or less building up to a future team. The team consisted of mostly sophomores and juniors, with only three seniors on the squad. With this team the Galva Devilettes showed the fans some of the basketball they can expect and always have looked forward to. They started the schedule off nicely and were going to prove that they were headed for another good season. Again this season the Galva girls were in the Maple Valley and Pop- Corn Loop Conferences. They participated in the Maple Valley Tournament at Holstein, also. Here, as the luck goes, they met Holstein in the first round and were eliminated. The team and season progressed till Sectional Tourney play was started. They raced past Cushing but had to run into Holstein, who proved to be one of the top teams in Northwest Iowa competi- tion. They played Schaller in the consolation round, which concluded the basketball season for l953-54 for the girls. The first of the season brought forth a lot of the season's most exciting games, with more to follow. The boys were holding their own and winning over half of the games. Then they entered the Maple Valley Tournament at Holstein and picked Arthur for the first round. The Blue Devils managed to squeeze past Holstein in the second round, before losing to Danbury in the finals. Several games were played before the Sectional Tournament began. The boys played Washta in the first game and then ran up against Correc- tionville, who was rated as the No. 2 team, Class B, in Northwest Iowa. This ended the basketball season for the Blue Devils and began what was to be a long volley ball season. The team won l2 of 2l games and finished 4th in the Pop-Corn Loop and 2nd in the Maple Valley. Christensen ln baseball this year we will have 2 seniors, 6 juniors, lO sophomores and 8 freshmen to make up the squad. We should be fairly tough for almost everyone is experienced at the game. But the weather has been against us early this spring. But when we get started we should be ready for our first game in April. Most of the boys have been practicing such fundamentals as bunting, fielding, and throwing in the gym. There are 3 regular games scheduled besides the Pop-Corn Loop Tournament, Sectional Tourney, and the District Tournament. Galva is looking for a good season this year and hopes to go far in the tournaments that we are in. In addition to the tournaments, regular season games have been scheduled with Lytton, Schaller, and Early. La Vonne Sorensen, Senior, and .lo Ann Schoening, Junior. The morning of October 9th dawned bright and clear, and Galvo High was humming with expectancy and suspense. The parade was sched- uled for l:45 and the students of Galva High were scurrying about finishing their floats and other decorations. One of the most exciting events of the day was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Gleneva Allen. During the half-time the band dem- onstrated a planned performance and concluded with the foirming of a heart. As the band then played Let Me Call You Sweetheart Harold Elk motored the Queen and her attendants to the center of this heart in his convertible. Here in the presence of many spectators, Verdine Meyer, football captain, presented Gleneva with a beautiful bouquet of red roses and the reigning crown of the day. Everyone enjoyed themselves at the very successful party put on by the Juniors that evening. lt was an extremely happy occasion since the football team had shown an excellent performance in topping C'ville 33 to 6.
