They began the year by sponsoring a mixer for the initiation of the freshman class. They, also, chose many interesting assembly programs that were given throughout the year, A victory celebration, sponsored by the Student Council, was given for the basketball squad for becoming the new Blackhawk Champions. A new amendment was drawn up and passed. This amendment concerned how much money would be paid for each member of a class for the class parties. Because of the confusion at noon hour in the lunch line, a set of Lunch Line rules was drawn up. The summer workshop at Normal, Illinois was attended by Ed Johnson and Richard Dexter. Here students from all over the state gathered to have a good time and get some ideas about student council work. A number of members attended the District Student Council Meeting at Pittsfield, Illinois. The theme of this meeting was Det's Build A Better Youth for a Free America. Those that attended the State Convention in Chicago were Gary Nelson, Tom Raley, and Ron Jones. This convention lasts three days and regular political campaigns and elections are held. The team scored an average of 65 3 points a game which was tops in the conference against their opponents They also had the best defensive record allowing an average of only 53 4 points a game. The 23 3 record is one of the best records ever compiled by a Galva team. This was one of the best balanced teams to ever play for Galva. Not just one player carried the scoring load but usually three or four scored in the double figures The team as a whole shot well above 40010 in most of their games and above 50010 m a couple of games Another thing that helped the team was their ability to control rebounds off both the defensive and offensive boards Both of these factors helped to make a well balanced championship team. After the regular season, Galva went to Galesburg to play in the Regional Tourna- ment. Galva got by Knoxville easily and came up against Abirgdon in the semi-finals. Galva had a tough time with them but came out on top 73-70. This brought Galva and Galesburg into the championship game. Galva gave Galesburg one of their roughest games of the season but came out on the short end of a 56-51 score. This year's Eugene Anderson Memorial Award, which is given to the varsity bas- ketball player who has the best free throw percentage, was won by John Cromien. He showed superior ability over all the other players while at the charity stripe. 0589! This page sponsored by JOE I. The sophomores and juniors who made up most of the team had several good competitors and should improve and be even better. Galva placed third in the Blackhawk and fourth in the Galva Relays. There is a great demand for teachers in America, and the Mildred Lapan Club of the Future Teachers of America is ably filling this demand for the Flight to the Future. In November, during National Education Week, special projects were undertaken. In recognition of National Teachers Honor Day the club presented a flower to every teacher, cleaned the grounds and corridors, and every member taught a high school class. Many other worth-while projects were undertaken such as: donating food to the Lion's Club for Christmas baskets and presenting gifts of home-made candy and cookies to retired teachers at Christmas time. Last October some of the members attended the regional rally held at Augustanna College in Rock Island. We are sure that a club with so many worthwhile pro- jects will continue to help many on their Flight to the Future. -as ist N-1 FIRST ROW: G. Selman, J. Kuster, D. Kaiser, D. Wexell, R. It is the duty of the airline hostess to provide this as it is the duty of the homemakers to do the same in the home. The theme for the F .H.A. this year was Stairway to Success. Our money making projects for the year were a bake sale, stationery sale, Hobo Day, and selling food at the football games. This year we had very entertaining programs at the chapter meetings. We had a career skit, Christmas gifts, International Relations skit, and a panel discussion on civil defense. All of these have been beneficial to the members. This year the F.H.A. formal was on December 7, and the theme Snow-Ball was appropriate for the time of the year. The gym ceiling was white and blue with sparkling snowflakes hanging down. There were Christmas trees placed throughout the gym with multi-colored lights. During the intermission Queen Nancy attended by her court was crowned. Durirg the month of February we had Secret Heart Sister. On February 12 we also had a Backwards Party. The National F.H.A. Week, February 24-28, was observed by the chapter by doing special things each day. Monday was red and white, the national colors for the organization, Tuesday was family night. To celebrate Family Night we had a party in the gym on March 25. The theme for the party was Picnic. For the entertainment the junior and senior girls modeled the garments they had made for Home Economics. Wednesday was neatness day, Thursday please and thank- you day, Friday good deed day, Saturday help at home, Sunday go to church. Everyone worked hard to make all the activities undertaken a success The band did a fine job marching in the homecomirg parade, and they put on an outstanding show at the Homecoming Game. The band also marched for other games that were enjoyed by the enthusiastic spectators. At the close of the marching season the band moved inside where there was a change of mood. The band continued their appear ances by playing at the home basketball games. The band also put on a Christmas Concert which consisted of more serious Christmas music. Each selection was intro duced by a member of the senior class. Our amiual spring concert was held on April 11th. The unusual theme Circus Daze was carried out extremely well. The band also played at the Blackhawk Band Festival at wethersfield. This year we had a fine dance band. They played for the Band Boosters, our vic- tory party, and the Lions Club. The money they earned from the dances will go to the fund for going to Chicago. This year the Lions Club is sending the band to the Lions International Convention in Chicago where they will march in the parade on July 9thg this will be the ba.nd's debut over television. We were greeted at the door by spacemen who parked our rocket ships for us. After a delicious meal Ron J ones presided as toast master and introduced Leland Hultgren, Sharon Vaughan, Bob Donaldson, and Miss Davis. They all gave speeches that the Seniors will long remember. The tables were cleared so that the couples could enjoy dancing to the music of the Dreamtimers. Couples took time out to have refreshments at the Cafe Canaveral. Mrs. Allegra Youngberg gave three humorous talks during the dance which brought much laughter from the 150 people present. For those who thought that people on earth would never believe that they had been in outer space, they had their pictures taken by Fritz Carlson. The Seniors join in thanking the Junior Class for a wonderful evening. One guest said, It was out-of-this-world. X v,2,.. b r , 3. 2.23 gr ,f e 4 ' ,ii ,.
