Memories that reach out from the early days at Mrs Anderson's kinder arten to the ood times we all ad in junior igh. F U White--we miss you! We who attended several rural schools scattered out around Galva have our mem- ories too We'11 never forget the fights the fun and most of all the friendships we shared together. Country schools are fast disappearing from the landscape around Galva We're sorr we can' show you these littlle schools but to us one memory is worth one thousand pictures. SPY R.,-g FRONT ROW: L. Among our yesterdays this picture will bring a few laughs, but it will also serve as a comparison to our varsity squads of today. This was our track squad in junior high in 1951. These fellows are our juniors and Q v sw' I I if ,W fe' its seniors of this year. They are on our varsity today and they will undoubt- edly be the varsity of the Galva community in years to come. 17 JN. f 6 ONCEWEWERE onruf B SQUAD 5 TOP: L. It wasn't too long ago that we seniors were playing B squad basketball and football We all know that a good B squad of today, means a good varsity of tomorrow. Our records this year, both in football and basketball, are an indication that Galva will have good teams for years to come. TOPQ L. Anderson. FRONT: Paul White, Manager. After a season that has seen many ups and downs, we conclude with a fairly good record. Among our accomplishments are the winning of the Galva Invitational and Elm- wood Tournaments, tieing for second in the Blackhawk, and a seasons record of sixteen wins and ten losses. We started the season slow, losing three out of the first five gamesg but after win- ning the Galva Invitational and Elmwood Tournament we won seven games out of the next nine. After beating Wyoming 54 to 43, we gained a tie for first place in the conference. However, when we played Elmwood the following week we lost 69 to 61. Then we went to Bradford and were beaten again, in a near riot, 74 to 67. We beat Toulon in an easy game, but then lost to Wethersfield and Cambridge. In our final conference game we stopped Princeville, 59 to 55. The team looked good and steady in that last game, but when we came up against Knoxville in the Regional, we seemed to fall apart. At one time we were within five points of tieing them up, but the boys just couldn't do it. Even after our poor showing during the last part of the year, and our loss to Knox- ville in the Regional, I'm sure most of us are proud of this year's team. They are a fine bunch of boys, of whom we should all be proud. Also, we would like to extend our thanks to Mr. Grove for his fine job of coaching. 38 SENIORS C1211 AL 'T O Val? A. girls holding their regular meeting. - From these meetings we got many ' if new ideas for a better club. Swimming at the Y in Kewanee and bowling at the Galva alley were added to our list of activities this year. Field hockey, basketball, volleyball, and softball completed our list of sports for this season. One of the highlights of the year was the play-day held at Annawan. Eight of our members represented our school. Galva was chosen to be host at the spring play-day for this section. At the present time we are planning the program for this play-day. .ytt We hope to have an all school party to raise money for our needs. Our final event of the year will be our annual banquet where the awards we have won will be given to the members. This has been a very successful year for the G. A. During this last summer the reat event of the Centennial allowed the members little or no summer vaca- tion. Many people ave us the eye when they saw us racticing back an forth in the street in front of the 5 high school. In advertising the Centennial a Booster trip was made to neighboring towns during which the band furnished music. Our introductions were reall good until Mr. Bailey was introduced. Oh! That discordl We all had fun and we were sorry that we couldn't make it for the second trip. The parades and pageant were our biggest events. At the pageant we used forty-four pieces in playing bac ground music. But with all the hard work our todays are filled with the rewarding and everlasting memories of those yesterda s. The marching season proved quite successful. It was really a thrill, to introduce the use of the lights at the Homecoming football game. This year we had a clarinet quartet, saxophone quartet, cornet trio, brass sextette, and drum ensemble which played for the grade school students. The full band entertained the Band Boosters Club during their meeting in February. -353' 3 As we go to press the band members are busily working on the special numbers for the concert in April. This leaves the band members with little leisure time because it requires much extra work. n One of the main events of the year was the annual Blackhawk Band Festival held in Wethersfield. The Galva Band gave its usual superb performance and was a source of pride to Galva. The band added a reat deal to the basketball games by playing at halftime. The crowd especially liked the numbers In the Mood and String of Pearls. During the rest of the year and for the years to come we, the seniors, wish you, Mr. Smith, the best of luck and we want to thank you for all you have done. We know the tomorrows will be as bright and gay for the band as the yester- days and todays have been. .fn-E 2.2 D 3- 21.4 r: I H 'E . f, J 1 , YQ , 1 , 4- fy -' 1 71 J 'J -- 9 ff Y ,CH f QA! of' gf so deaf 's Y V'aN g 'x'f 'x ', 1 'P 4 V8 UN ' txivxsan ' Q xl 64 FRONT ROWg L. Gary Kenney was elected our president, and the officers under him were Karen Morse, Vice-presidentg Val Lindbloom, Secretary, Lary Anderson, Treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Nash and Mr. Whitehouse. Val Lindbloom, Kay Conlin, Nancy Lord, Karen Stephenson, Jon Palmer, and Karen Morse attended the Pekin District Student Council meeting in Quincy. At one of our assemblies they told us about the ideas which were brought out at the convention. Almost all our assemblies were scheduled for the first semester and we enjoyed all of them very much. The student council were sponsors of the Christmas party held the last day before vacation. Each class furnished a program and the council served refreshments. We all laughed at Carol Hanson and the truth and consequence act, but were more serious for the Christmas story given by the sophomores and O Holy Night sung by Darlene Lind- berg. The second semester officers were elected. Jim Ericson, Presidentg Larry Pahlow, Vice-presidentg Karen Morse, Secretary and Treasurer, Larry Anderson, who was a hold-over in office from last semester. Other projects headed by the council was an exchange assembly with ROVA and Wethersfield. We also sent delegates to the state meeting at the PereMarquette Hotel in Peoria. The Student Council has been very successful in representing the whole student body. The activities sponsored by the council have added greatly to the school year. The whole school is very grateful to them for doing such a fine job. 9 '5 , fi 9 Q 5 gl 5.4- Elner Lundeen Presrdent J XS Xena Una B OI' cg eiavi lard Le -ilk onmx SOB SCHOOL BOARD Mrs Fred Dukey Treasurer 59 wlugf 8 a ft-ey d Thomson SUPERINTENDENT H. The Mildred Lapan FTA Club has had a very success- ful year under the direction of Val Lindbloom, President, Marge Nelson, Vice-presidentg Audre Peterson, Secretaryg Kay Burcky, Treasurerg Judith Huber, Librarian, Ramona McGrew, Publicity Chairmang and Karen Stephen- son, Historian. The yearly projects undertaken were finishing up an old project of teacher Writeups in local papers, observing teachers in junior high and grade schools, furnishing baby sitters for PTA meetings, providing teachers with FTA helpers. National Education Week was observed by posters by newspaper articles, and by student teaching. A Christ- mas project was collecting canned oods and toys for the Lions Ciub's Christmas Baskets. This year we have attended several Blackhawk District meetings, over which one of our members, Kay Burcky, presides as president. A high- light of the year was an ex- change meeting with Toulon and Wethersfield FTA Clubs on December l. Mrs. Howard Carper of Buda, retired teacher, sploke on teaching in general. T e members en- joyed this talk very much. Another highlight of the year was in January when Mrs. Arthur Koch spoke on the teaching of handicapped children. After the freshman were initiated into our organization, we all began to work in earnest. Our money making projects for the year were selling stationery, food at the football games and sponsoring a bake sale. With these proceeds we bought and planted bulbs to beautify the school yard. FHA week was celebrated, as usual, with each day set aside for a certain thing-cleaning our lockers, family night, and the wearing of red and white. We did everything from washing windows to raking leaves. From then on, we were busy planning for our Cinderella formal. The gym was decorated in silver and blue, and as we walked through the door, a fairy, Sue Armstrong, touched each couple with her magic wand. Queen Marilyn and her attendants were crowned during intermission. Carroll Baker and his orchestra furnished our music for the evening. We ended the year with our Mother-Daughter party. For entertainment we had a style show and an installation of new officers. We had a very successful year and we thank our wonderful sponsors for their OFFICERS Membership-Judith Huber, Mary Ann Mock, Reporters-Val Lindbloom, Peggy Lundeeh, Good Will-Betty Mascall, Leota Collinsong Historians-Carlene Helmkamp, Marcia Swanson, Sponsor-Mrs. Elva Whitehouse, Mrs. Mary Ann Block, co-ope ration. The big and most important project of the year was the starting of eleven chain gilts. Dana Mahaffey gave eleven Ag I boys each a gilt. These boys will give two gilts to two other boys next year and we hope the chain will continue. We made most of the money for the fishing trip to Minnesota in June by selling garden seeds and by selling popcorn at the football and basketball games. We plan to take our educational trip to Caterpillar or Keystone in Peoria. At this time we do not know who will represent our chapter at the State judging contest at Champaign or at the F. F. A. convention in Springfieldg both events will be in June. 74 8 yi ,x x 'if 5 , QA O. I I 4' 'f ,H gs- ., 4 V 1 3 59: Q ,' A J va' ,. If I ,. A . These students must show high qualities of character and leader- ship. The purpose of this organization is to encourage more interest in scholastic achievements. There were nineteen seniors and nineteen juniors in the organization this year. We tried out a plan to get the under- classmen to work harder, so that when they are juniors and seniors they can be in the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society wishes to thank Mr. Leonard Smith, our sponsor, for helping us make this year a success- ful one. fThis Page Made Possible by H. S.
