We were very proud of our Galva Wildcats' 1953-54 football squad this year, We felt that a better season has not been enjoyed in Galva in several years. The fine coaching of Coaches Jacobeit and Grove, along with a great scrapping team, proved to be important factors in our vic- tories this season. The excellent school spirit shown by our fans through out the football season was a tremendous help to the team. The first game was played against R. O. V. A. on Galva's field in a real downpour. It was too wet for both teams and the game ended in a scoreless tie, O to 0. The team traveled for the next two games. We were opposed by the two best teams in the conference. Walnut and Wyo- ming proved to be too much for us. We were beaten 45 to 7 by Walnut and 50 to O by Wyoming. We got on the winning side of life by beating Elmwood Z5 to O on our home field. This was not too much of a surprise. Elm- wood didn't have too much and the general conception was that we would win, Bradford was our next foe and this game was the high point of our season. Bradford's homecoming was ruined as the Galva gridders romped to a 19 to O victory. This was recognized as the biggest upset in the Blackhawk Conference. The superb line play by the Galva team greatly contributed to this crushing defeat. Galva's line, out- charged and out-fought the Panther linemen so unquestionably, that the final outcome was evident, The victory was well deserved by Galva, although it did have a price. The price that the Wildcats paid was the loss of Howard Summerson due to injury. Summer- son, a starting center, suffered a chipped ankle bone and was lost for the rest of the season. M ' Z f' Y rg :Q Q f Q- 3 r . 5 5 The Wildcats clinched another hard fought victory by beating Toulon 19 to 12. This was our homecoming game and we had made certain that no one ruined our homecoming by defeating us. Our next victims were Wethersfield, We traveled to Wethersfield to meet the team with whom we have had the strongest rivalry in several years, Remembering our losses to Wethersfield for the last several years, our boys turned in a ster- ling performance of football that evening. We brought home the bacon with a winning score of Z5 to 19. The win was a team victory as everyone on the line, along with the backfielcl, played spirited and scrappy ball and this factor was credited toward our win, Galva finished the football season with a win over Princeville 19 to 6. Princeville who hadn't had a very successful season, was up for this game. Alan Ericson and Bruce Simmons sustained injuries in this game. A good Galva team ended the football season with a fine record of five wins, two losses, and one tie. VHHSITU UIILDCHTS The l953-54 basketball season was fairly successful. The team was inexperi- enced and lacked the necessary height. They always played hard and they never gave up. Galva had an evenly balanced scoring attack. Each did his share to win. When they won they Won as a team when they lost they lost as a team. At the time of this writing Galva has a record of 9 wins and 13 loses. They Still have to play Cambridge and Walnut. They will then meet ROVA in the Regional at Galesburg. We have a new instructor and advisor this year Mr. Wilbur Liehr, who came to us from Miriorik. The calendar was full of activities this year beginning with the Farm Safety Survey, in which the members surveyed several farriis to see if they were safe. We divided up into teanis and had our annual pest killing contest. The losers gave an ice cream party for the winners, 48 if SR. OFFICERS IR, OFFICERS STANDING: R. Beeler, R. Palmer, R. Anderson. Music was played by Gordon's Melody Makers. In the Spring we had our annual F. F. A. Banquet which was served by the F. H. A. girls. For making money this year, we sold popcorn and pop at foot- ball and basketball games. We also sold hog troughs and garden seeds. With this money we hope to take a fishing trip to Minnesota. Mr. Whitehouse, last years sponsor, is now assistant sponsor and offered helpful suggestions for which we are very grateful. Initiation was held on October 13, when fifteen new members were taken into our organization. Because George Gustafson was unable to attend the regular initiation a special session was held in his honor where he was given the works. This membership brought our total to forty-four members. We made our usual trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on October 17. Many boys made the trip and had a good time looking at the wonders of science and industry. Again this year we had full control of the concessions at the Christmas tournament which helped to enlarge our treasury. Dale Theesfeld was in charge and did a fine job of keeping things straight. This year Mr. Triebe introduced a point system by which each boy would re- ceive points for such things as working, coming to meetings, etc. Then at the end of the year the boys with tne most points would be first in line for our spring trip and would also have to pay the least to go to our banquet. Later this year we will send two delegates to the Annual State Club Convention which will be held at Hotel Belleville, Belleville, Illinois on May 7 and 8. The location of our all day field trip is still undecided but we are all looking forward to this annual event. Our year will end with the annual banquet when the evening will be spent in eating, enjoying movies, and other entertainment. Our first year under our new sponsor was a successful and enjoyable one and we look forward to many more. 51 ll. A. A. The G. A. The Mildred Lapan Club of F. T. A. in its second year at Galva High, has shown a fine increase in membership. They are continuing with the successful point system, which enables the students to earn points by helping as student teachers and a great many other activities prescribed by the National F. T. A. We are proud that our F. T.A. Club has helped several other schools in organizing an F. T. A. Club. Also we have attended and participated in District Blackhawk Association meetings. We are very happy that one of our F. T. A. members, Kay Burcky, was elected Vice President of the Blackhawk District F. T. A. Organization. We know that she will do a fine job as president next year. We have undertaken several projects each year. This year our new project was help- ing teachers. This fall we began by sponsoring special acitivities each day during American Education Week in November. We carried on a clean-up campaign both inside the building and on the campus. Also. every member of the club taught at least once during that week and many assisted also in the various grade buildings. During the rest of the year the future teachers had numerous opportunities to teach in both high school and grade schools. As other projects we went Christmas caroling at the homes of re- tired teachers in Galva, and we also helped the Lion's Club furnish food, toys, and clothing to fill Christmas baskets for the needy. We hope that in future years the F. T. A. will grow and carry on with the many worth while projects. K Hlllllll HAIIHIRS Ill AMERICA pan, Sponsor. Mister Co-Ed, a comedy in three acts was presented by the Junior Class. Eustacia Hayworth, President of Cedar Hill College, an all girls' school, found that she needed money in a hurry. In a desperate attempt she decided to offer a free college education to Lotus Smith. Lotus Smith was the supposed grand-daughter of Mrs. Colgate-Brewster, a wealthy alumna of Cedar Hill. She had never seen her grand-daughter and so Miss Hayworth, played excellently by Marcia Hunt, thought that if she were to enroll Lotus, Mrs. Colgate-Brewster might come back from Eng- land and give the college some money. When Lotus Smith fRonnie Nelson, finally ar- rived, she proved to be a boy. A great deal of amusement evolved around the prin- ciple that a boy could not enter a girl's school. Homer Quackenbush, the handynfian at Cedar Hill, and Mrs. Colgate-Brewster fElaine Werkheiserl became interested in each other. She gave Cedar Hill the money and Lotus enrolled in an aeronautics school Then she and Homer went out West together to establish a ranch home for Lotus and Emily QJO Ann Conradl. Miss Peard and the cast well deserve all the compliments they received. 44- 1 5 A Us UP Walk 4 .Hi pr , , - - Q .-q. mif..t u i 'I 'ggaic pf g' . wQw 1-iff? This year the Vocal Music Department of the Galva High School was very active. This organization was composed of the Mixed Chorus, Girls' Chorus, Triple Trio, and the Mixed En- semble. The Mixed Chorus, composed of twenty- seven members, made a very attractive ap- pearance in their new robes. They sang for school assemblies, programs for the public, and for various outside organizations. The twenty-five members of the Girls' Chorus also sang for assemblies and public pro- '- grams. The smaller vocal groups, the Mixed En- serrible and the Triple Trio, sang at a large number of assemblies and, also, for many church and civic affairs. We think that the chorus, under the direction of Miss Nelrose Corkill, had a very successful year and they should be very proud of their fine organization. As usual it's filled with students who are here for their study hall periods. In addition it is humming with the activities of the Library Club Members. See that girl sitting at the desk? She is checking out books to the students. Over in another corner of the room two irls are working with bright paper and iook jackets. Soon they will have created an attractive bulletin board. Watch that girl over there! See how vig- orousl she is dusting the books and snel- ves ? 'lyhese are just the regular duties that the Library Club Members perform. This year the club has expanded its membership so that it now has the larg- est group in many years. A new point system has been installed by which each person may keep a record of his activit- ies and thereby remain in the club. The club has sponsored many pro- jects this year. Durin the latter part of November an all-sciool Halloween party was held in the gymnasium. Later in the year the club sponsored a movie. These projects have been carried on for the purpose of raising money for new books The Library Club is very proud of the fact that it is a member of the newly organized Blackhawk Library Club.
