He has been thrust into the mainstream of academics and extracurricular activities, and people's ex- pectations of him change. He is now sup- posed to begin behaving like an adult. New high school students reach to these expectations in different ways. Some try to live up to them and become wise academi- cians. Other rebel against high expectations and party hardy. And yet others ignore the expectations of outside influences and cre- ate their own for themselves. Students can accomplish all these goals on the high school campus, though partying there is frowned upon by the administration. High school can be dull and uninteresting, or it can be the scene of active and crazy goings-on. To students that come to school with a negative attitude, campus life is mere- ly something to be endured. But students that step onto school grounds expecting some- thing good to come out of their time will have their expectations rewarded with a little work. It takes participation for a high school student to enjoy these four years of his life: participation in clubs and sports as well as academics. Ask any high school student walking around campus with a smile on his face: he'll tell you that he's enjoying this phase of his life because he's an active participant instead of a passive observer. Not only did the space shuttle Columbia make another flight, this time, with a new at- tachment termed simply, an arm , but General James Do- zier was returned unharmed to his country and his wife after be- ing held hostage by the Red Bri- gades, an Italian terrorist group. President Reagan put Rea- ganomics into action and made lots of promises about improving the economy. And Pope John Paul Il. one of Catholicism's most popular popes, survived an assassination attempt as did Reagan in the United States. Though terrorism and rising prices have become worldwide problems, solutions can be found and put into action if ev- eryone would work together. ' : , ' Qs This year's Student Council can best be re- membered for its 60's Wing beautification pro- ject, which was spearheaded by Michael Woolstrum, Student Body President. This section of campus, which was formerly a mudhole in winter and a dust bowl in summer, was in dire need of improvements. Student Council made those improvements by covering over the bare earth with brick and adding five metal picnic tables so that stu- dents could make use of the area. Student Council was also in charge of eighth grade visitations. This event consisted of eighth from Oakview, New Hope, Arcohe, and Galt Middle School coming to the Galt High campus and being taken on a tour of all the different areas of the school, plus listening to presenta- tions from such departments as business, home economics, industrial arts, and music, all in their respective buildings. Gur student leaders also went on a ski trip to Echo Summit in February, which was their re- ward for all the hard work they had done in previous months. All in all, Student Council had a busy and productive year with a little fun added in. Student Council Leader Jim Ashwanden discusses issues with Representative to the Board, Shari Koepplin.
