Lieutenant Commander Murphy graduated from the United States Naval Academy in I954 and reported aboard USS PRINCETON KCVS-371 where he served until l956. As gunnery officer he completed a two year tour of duty aboard the USS COGSWELL IDD-65Ii. In i958 Captain Murphy returned to the Naval Acade- my as an instructor in the Weapons Dept. I96I found him as Executive Offi- Cer aboard the USS VAN VOORIS IDE-l028j homeported in Newport, R. I.. Fol- lowing destroyer duty he spent i963-64 in Monterey, California attending the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School where he received a M. S. in management, Captain Murphy assumed command of USS GALLANT QMSO-489, on 2 July l96U. LT Michael R. LANTOW, U. S. Navy, was born in Hays, Kansas October 6, l939. In l96I he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Long Beach State College and was commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve through the Reserve Offi- cer Candidate Program. His initial tour of duty was served in USS SERRANO KAGS- 241 as communications and subsequently operations officer. He then attended a six months course of instruction in mine-warfare at Charleston,South Carolina where he augmented into the regular Navy. Upon completing his course of instruction at Charleston he reported aboard GALLANT for duties as Executive Officer. LT Lantow now makes his home in Long Beach, California.
