The Advisory Group did its best to advise this year, and although its advice wasn't always taken, it was a step toward the students' goal, student gov- ernment. The students wish to have this selected committee argue and settle problems among themselves and then submit their solutions to the faculty for approval. The interest in meetings was unpredictable. Sometimes the fire- works would fly and then at other times, all would be quiet, offering no opin- ions whatsoever. One afternoon, Ianuary l2, 1945 to be exact, anyone would have noticed the phrases of pardon , excuse me , please , etc., echoing through the halls and rooms. Some modern Cavaliers even opened doors and pulled out chairs for our charming misses. This was the effect which the picture show, Charm and Personality, plus Character , had upon the students. The Advisory Group sponsored this movie as its main project of the year. It was interesting and caused much comment by both the teachers and the pupils. The representa- tives are the presidents of each organization, class, and homeroom. This ancient proverb has been the guide for the Quill and Scroll this year. Although attempts were made continually to have an active year, they were hindered by war-time restric- tions and an unpredictable schedule. We hope that next year the journalistic organization will try again and will meet with great success. Susie says: It's supposed to talce brains to get into this organization, but I don't seem to have any trouble understanding what goes on at their meetings. They speak mostly in words of few syllables and their ideas cren't too profound tor my intelligence. It they'd see the grades l made long ago in school, they'd kick me out, A huge tiger, fierce arid unfearing, kept watch over its captured prey Cvan- quished opponents of G. H. S. J, each of which had its own grave in the cem- etery at the east end of the gym, the night the Honor Society gave a dance to honor our undefeated football team. The ceremony of crowning the foot- ball queen, which it is hoped will come traditional, was executed at this time as the main attraction of the evening. Large purple and white bows identified the twenty-one new members the day the successful candidates were announced. They were elected on the basis of their scholarship, service, character and leadership. My womanly intuition told me that something was wrong but these men just won't take ad- vice from a woman. Having one of its most active years, the Hi-Y fulfilled its purpose of being a service organization. The fifty-two members had as their president, lack Gans- horn, until the armed forces called him at the end of the first semester, at at which time Paul Finical, vice-president, advanced to the presidency and successfully carried on lack's duties. Other officers were lohn Weitthoff, sec- retary: Ronald Rick, treasurer, and Charles Griebling, sergeant-at-arms. Mr. Probst was the faculty sponsor of the organization. The Hi-Y carried out its traditional activities, conducting the refreshment stand at the football games, sponsoring the annual Thanksgiving assembly, and holding a Father-Son banquet. At the last named event excitement was furnished by Chuck Ness, who was to be toastmaster until a few hours before the affair when a case of chicken- pox brought a change of plans. Iohnny Weitthoff's last minute substitution was proof of the adaptability of some of our talented members. The speaker for the banquet was Paul Barrett, who gave a brilliant and inspiring address. Climaxing the Hi-Y activities was the traditional Sweetheart Party which proved that the Hi-Y boys are capable of romance as well as service. How l 'left to right Charles Griebling. GIRL RESERVES OFFICERS President Elaine Roop Vice President--Barbara Leiby Secretary Persis Townsend Treasurer Genevieve Shumaker Undaunted by interrupted sched- ules cmd occasional obscure pur- poses, the Girl Reserves carried out an unusually active year. The first meeting was an indoor Wiener roast at which reports were given by the girls who attended G. R. camp. Having an exceptionally talented cast enabled the club to present their an- nual Christmas pageant, The Spirit of Peace, in a very impressive manner. Sponsoring the writing of letters to servicemen who were members of our high school classes, and the Bundle Drive, were two of the organization's worthiest projects. The section blocked off in the main corridor as a receptacle for the bundles, served as a screen to hide more than one student who was prowling in the halls at the wrong time. Another of the charities of the girls which will go down in the annals of G. H. S., was the replacing of the stapler in the principal's office. The members derived much enjoyment from the song books purchased this year, as well as the new G. R. bulletin board. According to custom many churches were at- tended by the group during the year. The Sweetheart Party, a lovely and memorable event, climaxed the year's G. R. activities. I UNIOR CLASS PLAY Susie says: There was a real reason for Miss Harris's wearing orchids on November 21, 1944. The night before, the junior class had given Anne Coul- ter Martins' 'Don't Keep Him Waiting', and I swear that I have never heard anything to equal the laughter which rang through these halls then. The part of Ieff Ramble, a camera fan, was ably portrayed because Iohn Beecher tried out for the part and got it. As Toodles, IoAnn Smith added comedy to every situation. Ioan Carmel was very convincing as Betty Ramble, who paid all the bills. Iames Van Meter aged forty years on the stage to give a grand performance as Owen, the father of the family. I forgot who Catherine Chinni was! The minute she stepped on the stage, she was Aunt Selina, a horoscope fan. Maxine Craner, as Iinny, had the whole audience pulling for her in her efforts to make Ieff realize that she was his dream girl. If I didn't know George Stoner better, I would have actually believed him to be that lazy! As Sally Lou, Ieanne Lohr fascinated not only leff, but the audience as well. Daphane Evans was outstanding and didn't forget one line! David Vance, our hero, played by Charles Heiser, added romantic in- terest to the play. O'Toole, lack Hubley in real life, showed great determin- ation in his demands for money, and Amos Atkins, alias Gene Berger, helped to straighten out the romance of Betty and Dave. SENIOR CLASS PLAY When Dr. Markham P. Will we ever forget that boogie woogie number they played on the football field? Ah, no! Nor shall we forget the way they played Audi- torium Session at the concert in March. That was enough to make any high school jitter-bug's feet jump! This year the band had the privilege of bringing to our school Bohemir Kryl and his all-woman symphony orchestra. The band and their director, Fredolf Liddell, are to be congratulated for pro- ducing such fine work. Their colorful marching formations, snappy concerts, and peppy music at the basketball games will always be something for our students to remember and be proud of. Yes, our band went modern. They tried something new and different, and as far as we're concerned they accomplished it. On May 4, as the grand finale of the National Music Week, seven bands from surrounding communities joined Galion's to present a memorable pro- gram. Although the entire event was to have been performed out-of-doors, because of the rainy weather it was transferred to the Galion lunior High Auditorium. Since space was so limited, select groups from each band united to form the mass band which presented several numbers after each band had rendered its individual selections in the evening's concert. An enthusi- astic audience jammed the bleachers in the gymnasium and showed their approbation and appreciation by loud and lengthy applause. In spite of the threatening weather in the late afternoon, there was a parade in which all members of all bands participated. This was indeed a thrilling and colorful sight. The streets through which the bands marched were lined with enthusiastic and interested spectators. Bands which took part in this outstanding presentation represented high schools at Crestline, Bucyrus, Upper Sandusky, Bellevue, Norwalk, Mt. Gil- ead, Leesville and Galion. DRUM MAJOR AND M1-UORETTES This year we went back to our tradition of a boy drum major. This position was filled by lack Wil- liams, and very nicely, too. His speedy twirling and gay strutting aroused enthusiastic cheering from the crowds as lack entered the field. Also, this year, our drum major was followed by only two majorettes instead of six. These were Iuanita Davis and Marjorie Tracht. They did their share of strutting, too. For the first time, majorettes were required to take a part in band work in ad- dition to the marching season. Juanita mastered the bassoon and played that instrument in the band. Marjorie had the endless job of librarian, which she performed efficiently and untiringly. These students have certainly added to the appearance of the band as they marched down the field, and twirled at the band concert. This is a new musical organization formed only last year, and is composed of fifteen members. We all remember how attractive the girls looked in their white formals as they stood in a V formation last year. This year the girls made an even more strikingly beautiful picture, appearing in their pastel formals. The Victory Singers sang several numbers when the A Capella Choir gave their concert in March. They sang such songs as The Time ls Now, Long Ago and Far Away, and With a Song in My Heart. The girls in this group, under the leadership of Miss Slocum, are giving out- side time for practice, and they certainly have something to show for it. CHOIR On March 21 the A Capella Choir, composed of thirty-seven members, gave an interesting and very entertaining program. A guest artist, Hose Bruno, who is majoring in music at Otterbein College, sang several special numbers. The rest of the concert was divided between classical numbers by the entire group and solos, duets, and sextettes by its talented members. The whole program proved to be very colorful, and, as always, it pleased the public. This is the first time the choir has sponsored guest artists and alumni mem- bers on their program. High school solists were: Sophomoresflrene Kottyan, Patricia Schmitt, Dick Ginderg Iuniors-Catherine Marie Chinni, Iack Hubley: Seniors-Elaine Ber- ry, Dorothy Ross, Iackie Girton Bodkins. Performers from past graduating classes were Naomi Girton Goodwin, Faithe Berry and Vivian Berry. As a part of National Music Week CMay l-7j the choir, under the leadership of Miss Ieannette Slocum, presented their annual concert. The orchestra ac- companied the choir on several numbers and added much to the success of the program. It was a group of boys always working together and forming an organization based on cooperation and coordination that could not be beaten. This spirit brought them through an arduous nine-game schedule undefeated and also the co-championship of two leagues, both the North Central Ohio League and the newly formed Northern Ohio League. It was a season highlighted by the last annual encounter with Marion end- ing in a scoreless tie, and the all-important game with Ashland that saw Galion emerging victorious in a last half surge 19-0. There was that tremen- dous, record-shattering 84-0 Cofficial scorej defeat of Bucyrus, and an almost disastrous game with Shelby in which we came from behind to whip the Whippets 19-13, in a game which had been delayed two hours while a huge crowd waited in complete darkness and two anxious teams sat in the field house. Certainly a scene long to be remembered. We have sung the praises of our football men, but we must not forget that behind the scenes doing irksome work and receiving little credit are the stu- dent athletic managers. So, let's give a big whoop for our incomparable man- agers, Iohn Yochem, senior manager: Bob Neff, assistant manager, and Law- rence Case, Arthur O'Leary and Howard Decker. 1944 FOOTBALL RECORD Galion Tiffin Calvert 6 Galion Crestline O Galion Marion 0 Galion Shelby 13 Galion Bucyrus O Galion Mansfield Madison Galion Mount Vernon 6 Galion Ashland O Galion Willard 0 r a F 5 4 r, W if ' if 2, 2 of S iw. u -3 19 ,, tn 5- -Q Y ' fn 5: A '- -2. iflvvfi ' 1 Y W 1 A 'Q-M - , 4,1 , ng A 'wi ' f Qr F2 6 5' Ei-ff Q I ' b 'Q ' g 01514 is ! an iw Q F2 I Row I fleft to rightg Iim Fendrick, Iohn Vossers, Lynn Heskett, Ioe McGuire, Bob Garverick, Captain Gene Plummer, Bob Neff, Ralph Ramsey, Charles Griebling, Don Heskett. RESUME OF GAMES At the beginning of the basketball season there were many who thought that our quintet would repeat the record of the football team. ln spite of the final record of 9 games won and ll lost, the fans saw plenty of fast basketball. The team was one of those hot and cold outfits, now blazing down the floor for an amazing comeback, now getting into a rut of sloppy passing and poor- ly calculated shots. The season gave us a few things to remember for a long time to come-that beautiful job of turning the tables on Bucyrus when we played the Redmen on their own floor, and the Marion game here where the score see-sawed back and forth until the crowd was in hysterics. Senior members of the team graduating this year are Capt. Gene Plummer, forward: Bob Garverick, center, and Doc Griebling, guard. Also probably lost to next year's squad will be underclassmen Don Heskett, lim Fendrick, and Ralph Ramsey, who will be playing on Uncle Sam's team. However, capable replacements will be found in Coach McCracken's Ir. Varsity, who enjoyed a season of 9 wins against 9 losses. Iohn Vossers and Lynn Heskett having had some varsity experience this year, will probably be ready to step into starting positions along with Bob Neff and Ioe McGuire. Other promising Iayvee cagers likely to win promotions are George Treisch, Clyde Smith, Don Rogers and Harold Ramsey. VARSITY lr, VARSITY We They 22 29 We They 28 22 Nov, At Mt. Gilead - - Dec. HAS BUSY YEAR At last the girls of G. H. S. have the sport organization that they have wanted for so long. The Girls' Athletic Association, under the supervision of Miss Siefert, was instituted this year. All junior and senior girls who were inter- ested automatically became members of the group. In succeeding years sophomores must have a stated number of credits to join the G. A. A. The objectives of the club are: to have a wholesome and diversified program of sports, outings, and social affairs: to introduce student-conducted activities, thus encouraging leadership, fellowship and friendliness in athletics: and to foster a spirit of good sportsmanship among members and the school. The seniors' letters and juniors' credits were awarded to those who earned the specified amount of points which were given for participation in intra- mural activities.
