There were many events that occurred during the 1964 football season that will go down in history-or at least they'll go down in the historian's scrapbook. One of the first events to happen was the recruiting of Mr. Larry Mclnerney as our new backfield coach. The second event came when Galileo upset, defeated, bashed, creamed and rolled over the defending champs of St. Ignatius before a tremendous crowd on hand-comprised largely of the players on the bench. During that memorable season, Gal. also produced some All-City gridders. O.J. Simpson was the top fullback in the city and fans can well remember his notorious up-the- middle dashes for the touchdown. To go up the middle on defense, it was Al Cowlings. Al blocked many punts and seemed to pounce upon his victim much like a giant grizzly. A Gal. gridder who was famous for his many kickoff returns was Al Oliver, who would brush aside the first man to reach him and outrun the rest of the team to chalk up six points on the scoreboard for Gal. A lot can be said about that shocking year. But perhaps the most significant event to occur was Gal's triumph over Poly in the televised game.
