PRINCIPALS MESSAGE- Galileo Galilei, after whom our school was named, was a man of great stature, As we commemorate his 400th birthday, we are reminded of the struggle he had to end an era of superstition and ignorance so that men might glimpse the wonder ofthe universe. The telescope fthat he perfectedj is the instrument still used for ex- ploring the heavens for truths. As young men and women of reason you too have a responsibility to the society in which you live. Too many of us are complacent and self satisfied with the role that we play. We take too many things for granted and let opportunities slip by - This we cannot afford to do. We must try to develop our abilities to their highest po- tential. Only then shall we be ready to become happy successful and contributing members of our society. Galileo High School -- has much to offer -- don 't miss this opportunity. DR, JAMES C, MORENA Page 17

Mrs, Higgins is the dean of girls and the assistant principal of our school, She is also the advisor of the Girls' Council which is a well-known service club at Galileo. As dean of girls, she takes all disciplinary action against girls whenever necessary and any other added duties which are given to her by the principal. She also sees to it that all classes are supervised by a teacher at all times. As you can see Mrs, Higgins is a very busy person, and we at Galileo appreciate all that she is doing for us. lf you were to walk into 207, the counseling office, you would find a patient, understanding, and gentle man surrounded by stacks and stacks of papers. This person is Dr, Carlson, the head counselor at Galileo, He has charge of all the counseling services of the school, Under his guidance are an educational counselor, a vocational counselor, and a work coun- selor, Dr. Carlson is also in charge of the grade coun- selors who are assigned to each registry. Many students do not realize it, but Dr, Carlson is the person who is responsible for the scheduling of students and the work- ing out of their programs. We should all appreciate this service which he performs so ably, Mr, Smith is the dean of boys and the assistant principal at Galileo, He and Mrs, Higgins have very much the same jobs, Mr, Smith however takes Cafe of disciplinary cases with the boys. Mr, Smith is often the link between the police and the student in cases of student crime, He also handles conferences with par- ents concerning their child 's behavior in school, Mr, Smith is actually the Vice-Principal and substitutes for Dr, Moren, whenever Dr, Morena finds it impossible to be at school. . f l 4 f 3 4 5 Q' , K fa ,3 if X sifrrwtwffrfjx W vw -f sf msgs rg A N ldujts--5 A Q ,-as.
