Q I, l -ki f-.f , Q- 'LP XL 'ii PrineipaI's Message A short time ago I attended a dinner honoring a very prominent citizen and golfer. Coinciden- tally, I was seated at the table with two men who had been graduated from Galileo in the early 30's. When they heard that I was connected with this great school, a warm glow appeared on their faces. Questions were asked with great enthusiasm and rapidity. Are the Lions still there? 'fHow is that palm tree in the courtyard? Do they still have a senior bench? Is Missl still there? She used to be my reg. teacher! During the two or more hours the barrage continued with keen interest emotion and finally one of them said, I think of Galileo quite often. Every once in a while we try to get a few of our gang together and talk of our wonderful high school days. You know, he continued, sometimes we don't appreciate what a wonderful opportunity we have in high school until it's too late. Boy, I wish I had it to do over again. Soon many of you will be graduated. Each will go his own way. Though you may be miles apart, you will be held together by a common bond. . . a life line wnichubrings you together in spirit. . .because you attended Galileo. vi Sharing the dedication is Miss Madelaine Madsen. Affectionately known as M. M. to most of her students, she advises Gal's most active service club, the Lion's League. Besides ser- vice to the school, the Lion's League is known for its rollicking trips to Disneyland. These field trips would never materialized had it not been for Miss Madsen's perseverance. One can see Miss Madsen speeding to school every morn ing via her cocoa-colored Thunderbird in order to sell school items in the Robber's Roost, the store run by the Lion's League. A very loyal supporter and lover of sports, she attends all games Whether they are played at home, Kezar Stadium , or Big Rec. To Miss Madsen we extend gratitude on behalf of all the students for her con- tribution to Galileo. Dedication This is more than a dedication, it is a thank-you to Mr. Frank Brady for the endless hours he has spent as advisor of the Telescope. The night before deadline one can find him in his darkroom printing pictures, writing copy or creating a layout. Mr. Brady's home, as Well as room 452 is a yearbook Workshop. Often the staff has spent the Whole day at his home in order to meet a deadline. We, the 1963 Telescope staff, take special pleasure in this dedication because We are the only one of the Yearbook staffs , fat Galileo and at the other three high schools Where he was yearbook advi- sor,J that has succeeded in dedicating a book to him. Since most of the 1963 staff Will be gone with graduation, we hope that this Telescope will serve as a remembrance of us and as a token of our gratitude. www ,U+v+N....,, I . 1, yt' .al - 1 f J: Y 5' , ' me - 4 Z, , -.4-f1Jg,.?2' 33' .Q .T . iblil pg? . ic. ,-. 5 egg- -'J xx, -4 el' -4 0:4 ., 1 - -. 7 L ,, L .E t ,Av 5 . .I . -W . . ,Q If isis -' 'X ' Q., u !'. 1, H ' 'lg' ug VV. The Son and Yell Contest is a Gal- 8 ileo tradition dating back to 1945. It arouses school spirit for the coming football season, as each class works feverishly to win the gold cup. The classes are required to sing the school hymn, fight song, and prepare a skit, in addition to the yells. Judging is based on the general appearance, per- formance and conduct of each section. Never at any time throughout the school year is there as much enthu- siasm and spirit among Galileans as when they perform at the Song and Yell Contest. We were either looking around amazed at the size of the auditorium or looking for friends from other junior high schools. We seemed a little awkward, a little insecure, and a little proud of being in high school. Three years later, those of us who survived marched down the aisle of Nourse Auditorium and the thoughts of the memorable moments we enjoyed together flashed through our minds. We remembered the Low Ten Popcorn Saleg the many hours of work in organizing it, the mounds of popcorn on the ground and the fun and profit the class received from it. Recalling the Song and Yell Contests , we remembered when we were juniors and the difficulty we had in filling and hiding the two huge weather balloons that sat in the middle of the field during the contest. It rained the night of the junior Prom, As Seniors we recollected our frantic search for rick- shaws when we carried out the theme Ping for the Song and Yell Contest. The city was covered by a blanket of thick fog for our Senior Prom. After graduation we went our separate waysg only the memories linger in our minds to remind us of high school friends. Mrs. Higgins stands out for many girls as a true friend and counselor. whose warm and fair judgment has led many to more sensible lives. Along with her duties as Dean of Girls, she also sponsors one of the most prominent of service or- ganizations, The Girls' Council. These are only a few of the ways in which Mrs. Higgins has shown her fine talents and interest in the betterment of our school. A demanding and difficult position at Galileo is that of the office of Boys' Dean. It calls for a patient and under- standing personlike Mr. Smith. With his utmost concern forthe good will of the students, he strives to give guidance to all who seek his counsel. Boys can freely confer with Mr. Smith about their problems to have them straightened out with an impartial, but firm opinion. Dr. Carlson is one of the busiest, but most patient and understanding counselors Galileo has ever had. Although he is a busy man, he tries his best to advise the students who come to him with their problems. As Head Counselor, his aid to students has helped them to grow and learn through their years at Gal. gpmpam' s vs Q.. 5? ,X ki A 'PN-, ,S 1 nr fJ ' X XX s ,l Mxs . A Letter From the Editor Dear Galileansz This letter completes the fall and winter sections of the book and draws to a close my duties as editor. I could tell you of the time and effort the staff has put into completing these two sec- tions and of the work that will be put forth to complete the rest of the book, butI will not. I will let the 1963 Telescope speak for itself. If you look at your yearbook with pride and proudly display it to your friends, then we will have succeeded. There is no greater satisfaction that an editor or staff can feel than to know that they have produced a yearbook that pleased their fellow students. Each member of the staff contributed his share toward making the book. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of them for their fine work. They made my job much easier. In behalf of the whole staff, I want to thank Mr. Frank Brady for his work and assistance During the year I have served as editor, I have found his knowledge of photography invaluable. I know that the staff joins with me in wishing Mr. Brady the very best of luck in advising the fu- ture Telescope staffs. Graduation will terminate my duties as editor. I want to wish Carolyn Yee, the spring editor the very best of luck. I know that she will enjoy the job of editor as much as I have. 7 Sincerely , .fp -'N CCZZCC44-f 75 -V .rf - V X '- - ' - ' :. 1 4.1--gf ,..,,5..,,,:.: .:- ' :f.,yf-gg fx 1 ' 1- -9,5 Y.--,. PIU. il- I El The Lions' League is an organiza- tion which has been and still is of a great service to our school. They are responsible for supplying our students with school supplies and selling candy Lions' at the football games. They also had a hand in making the K.O. Polio drive and the magazine drive a big success. Other worthwhile projects include making the patient's stay at the Let- erman Hospital a little more enjoy- able. Besides doing service to the school the Lions' League also does a lot of traveling. The League 's sponsor, Miss Madsen, takes care of all excur- sion ti-ips. So far, the organization has taken tours of various universities, such as Davis and Stanford, has taken an educational tour of the United Air- lines, and has planned another trip to Disneyland. 7 The Junior members of the Lions' League try their luck at smiling. Girls' Council The Girls'Council is one of the many service or- ganizations at Galileo. Membership is applied for and approved by Mrs. Higgins, the sponsor, and the officers. At the present, this organization has adopted the point system to help earn pins and life member- ship to give recognition to those who deserve it. This term, Girls' Council has once again under taken the job of patrolling the halls during the lunch periods. Each girl is now authorized to give out Stu- dent Court citations to the offenders. Other worth while service projects in which these girls are engaged include helping a Galileo K.O. Polio center and ush ering at the term plays and at graduation. Byron Fortman, executive officer, C!Capt. Garrett Lee, adjutant, C!Lt. Vladimir Stekley, public information officer, CfLt. Bryan Wong, training officer, and CfLt. Tyrone Cobb, supply officer. The Drill Team, this term, was commanded by CfCapt. Tony Leong. The Drum and Bugle Corp was commanded by CfLt. Robert Miller. Galileo's Drum 8 Bugle was selected as the only Drum S Bugle Corp to play at the annual 91st Com- petition. The Color Guard was commanded by CfLt. Robert Williams. The Saber Club was revived in the Battalion. This club consisted of commis- sioned officers only. In many ways it was like a social club, in which it could use its funds in any way it pleased. The Saber Club was led by the Battalion Comman- der C!Lt. Col. Adam Wolf as president, CfCapt. Byron Portman, vice-president, CfCapt. Tony Leong, secretary, and C!Lt. Vladimir Stekly, treasurer. A new system took place in ROTC this term. In order for a cadet master ser- geant to become a commissioned officer, he must have passed a three-part exam- ination including an interview with a board consisting of the battalion commander, executive officer, and adjutant. An Officers' Call was also established where offi- cers and non-commissioned officers met to discuss current problems in ROTC. 9,71 A 1 11 V. - -,V ' ' -1 f 'Vt : Z f '. , ' ,' . Dan and Gerry found classes at Gal different from their small classes at Wasatch. The rush and push one experiences in our cafeteria during lunch took time to get used to, but our visitors took it in stride. WE l X e at bf' e - ...W 'Ula Dr. Morena warmly welcomed the exchange students from Wasatch on their first day. From the left is Gerry Erikson, Dan Welton, jo- dean Gibbons, and Dyann Dyer. An Equal Trade For many years Galileo has participated in a stu- dent exchange program each spring, Four students, two boys and two girls, selected by Cameron House with the approval of Dr. Carlson, are sent to Wasatch Academy located near Salt Lake City, Utah. In re- turn, Wasatch Academy sends four students to Galileo for two weeks. Attending a boarding school causes a bit of uneasiness for our representatives, and the ex- change students from Wasatch also find a large high school difficult to adjust to. All students soon learn the similarities between Galileo and Wasatch, and they return to their respective schools with many new experiences to tell. This year, Galileo's representa- tives were Esther Kwan, Lawrence Low, Lorelyn Low, and Russell Wong, and the equal trade brought Dyann Dyer, Gerry Erickson, jodean Gibbons, and Dan Wel- ton to Galileo. j , Q jodean and Dyann tried out ping-pong in the girls' gym and discovered many sports are offered in our physical education department. These people are Galileo's scholars who belong to the California Scholarship Federation QCSFJ. Students who have maintained an A-average are eligible to apply for CSF. Those who maintained a B-average apply to the Silver Seal Society. Pictured here are another group of Ga.lileo's scholars. 'Qu Mx QQ? N .
