DEDICATION JAMES W. SCHOTT The Staff of the Galetonian would like to dedicate this 1987 edition to Mr. James W. Schott. After 30 years in the teaching profession, Mr. Schott has decided to pack away his band shoes, hang up his baton, and settle down to enjoy a life of leisure. We don't mean to say Mr. Schott is going to retire; he is just preparing for other jobs. As you can see by the accompaning photos, Mr. Schott, will always be dressed for whatever the occasion, stay active and healthy, and dig into a new occupation. We wish you the Best of Luck, Jim Schott! TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ADMINISTRATION SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS FOOTPRINTS One night a man had a dream. He dreamed that he was walking along the hallways of his high school, looking back on all of the memories. As he walked, he noticed footprints on the floor, one set belonging to him and the rest belonging to all of his high school friends. 4 He noticed that, at the beginning of the hall, the footprints were very small. Here they wandered about in an abstract, carefree way, not really go- ing anywhere. But, as he walked further along, the footprints began to grow, and he could see they began to take shape and have a purpose. 5 In some places they tripped, in some places they danced, and, in some, they ran. The man realized that these had been the hard times, the fun times, and the frightening times during his high school years. As he looked back, he noticed that during the hard times, some of the footprints disap- peared. Sometimes it had been his footprints and other times it had been those of his friends. He then realized that during those tough times they had carried each other through and set other back on their own two feet. As the man came to the doorway at the end of the hall, he smiled. All the footprints went their separate ways, but they were all going in one general direction, forward. ADMINISTRATION Frank Flamish, Jr. Superintendent Walter Gross presenting Wayne Singer certificate of appreci- ation for years of service G. Robert Grant Principal SCHOOL BOARD During the 1986-87 school year, the Galeton Area School District saw a change take place in the position of board president. Mr. Wayne Singer, who served sixteen years on the board, fourteen of which he was president, resigned as he moved from the school district. During his tenure, Mr. Singer was active in spearhead- ing many projects at the school, two of which were the building of a curriculum which became student-cen- tered to meet the needs of all students, and the con- struction of 1977. Mr. Singer was also involved in other community af- fairs. He was president of the Municipal Authority. Serving on both of these organization took up a con- siderable amount of his time, which he gave unselfishly. The Galetonian would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Singer and to wish Mr. Walter Gross, the new president the best in his new position. We are at the magnificent BEACKER mansion owned by MARK BEACKER, still very popular and the newest photographer for Playboy Magazine. Driving up to the estate now is Dr. THOMAS BERRY. He had quite a trip to get here. He was too short to get a job in any American hospital, so now he is head honcho at Peking General. Behind TOM is LINDA BEACKER. She and Barry have just opened up a new theater in Galeton. Rumor has it that they have been to busy to run it, so they ve hired JULIE BROOKS and TRACEY FULLER to do it for them. JULIE used to own a store in a shopping mall in L.A., but had to move back 'cuz it was like, totally giving her too much grief. TRACEY was JULIE'S fashion designer but when JULIE left there was no way TRACEY was staying on by herself. The party's really picking up now as we move on past VINCE BOWEN. VINCE still lives in Galeton and is now president of BOWEN Insurance. Next to VINCE stands DAVE . KRIS BURROUS. DAVE is happily married to Wendy and now lives in New Mexico where he and Wendy have a chinchila farm. KRIS, on the other hand, has bought out Holiday Inn and renamed the chain Germania Hotel. JEFF BUTTON works at the New York location of Germania Hotel. JEFF is in charge of fire protection. Also working for KRIS is RICK BRYANT. RICK used to be a one-man-traveling band until KRIS hired him full time. Another classmate who made it into show business is RUSTY COLE. RUSTY is hoping to become a world famous wrestler. But for now he's satisfied at being Andree the Giant's personal manager. One person who couldn't make it tonight is RICHARD DANDREA. RICHARD now controls all oil being bought and sold in the U.S. and had to fly to Saudi Arabia on business. Here comes VICKI DENLINGER. VICKI started playing the lottery as soon as she was 18 and won 500 million with which she bought Universal Studios. Moving on now we've just received news that JUMPIN JIM DOUD can't make it either. JIM joined the peace corp in Africa two years ago and hasn't been heard from since. Some say he was captured by an all fe- male tribe of Pygmies. No one really knows. Shuffling through the crowd is ERIC GUTGSELL, better known as RAMBO. ERIC just returned from his mission in Africa. He still hasn't found JIM!!! MICHELLE GARY is flying out the door in a hurry. She just got word that her tattoo parlor just went bankrupt. What a shame There seems to be a commotion out on the lawn. It's the LITTLE GLEASON TWINS arguing again. MICHELLE, GERT ELIZABETH, is an elementary school teacher and is happily married to Wes. MELIS- SA, MYRTLE, is living with Good Ole Brian and they now own the newest greeting card chain, Gleason- Mark. They specialize in frogs of course. There's DEADLY DIAMOND DAVE HAUBER. DAVE owns a duck farm in Georgia and stunt drives for a hobby. DAVE just told us that DONNA JEFFRIES and LEAH TERRY are not going to make it. They are now VINCE BOWEN'S private secretaries and are holding down the fort while he's at the party. Here comes NELL JONES. NELL has been doing well since she's taken over Mrs. Long's teaching job. NELL now teaches aerobic typing. It's been going around that DENNY LUGALIA hasn t returned from Denny- ville since army hairstylist CAROL MCCULLOUGH perfected his locks Her brother MIKE M. went on a quest in the French Riveira in search of JULIE PAYNE, famous novelist now living in France. MIKE has been in pursuit of her since our last Econ. class. And here comes CHUCK CH AS E ANS. CHUCK now owns Pepsi-Cola and lives in beautiful Hawaii, (he flew over in his private jet). JOE PETRENSCIK is now a fashion model for designer clothes in Russia. Some say he's been smuggling clothes in to the USSR for quite some time now. But who knows. Here's a latecomer, it's TAMMI PRESTON. TAMMI is a movie director for VICKI DENLINGER at Universal Studios. Her last project is Howard the Duck II , which will be opening soon at BEACKER's THEATER in Galeton. Who's coming now? JACKIE SANDERS TRACY YEAGER TRACY has taken over her father's business and JACKIE is in charge of finances. RYAN SCHOTT , whom everyone thought would become a great musician, is now a dope pusher. Well, actually he's taken over Leo's position at Galeton Drug. In charge of food and drink at this extravagant event is JON SMITH AND WAYNE VANDERNICK. As you can see the menu consists of beer pretzels. Last but not least, is FRED WELFLING. FRED became a world traveler and has crazy stories from every country around the world. But none are as crazy as this one. So we, the class of '87, leave you with this: BON VOYAGE!!!!!!! 21 JAMES W. DOUD DUBIE Soccer-4 yrs, Basketball-3 yrs, Baseball-2 yrs, Tennis-2 yrs. CROWN Kneeling: Chrissy Lychalk, Coach Garman, Michelle Booth. Standing: Erin Callahan, mgr.. Dawn Geiser, Wendy Jeffries, Jean Newruck, Kelly Thompson, Gretchen Kreisler, Colleen Callahan, mgr. This year's tennis team once again provided our school and fans with exciting championship tennis. The girls finished the season with an unblemished record of 10-0 and their 3rd straight N.T.L. Championship. The girls have continued to improve year after year and get tougher and tougher to beat, as their skills, knowledge and understanding of the game increases. In their 3rd year of tennis, the four juniors (Chris, Kelly, Michelle, and Jean) have already captured three team championships and next year they are shooting to make it 4 out of 4. Right girls? Also contributing significantly to our success over the past two years have been sophomores Gretchen and Wendy. They have won many a point for us in both singles and doubles. Rounding out the team is Dawn, the only newcomer to this year's squad. Dawn's development and improvement throughout the year makes her a serious challenger for a playing spot next year. With everyone returning for next year, the outlook in girl's tennis remains bright. BOOTERS MAKE DISTRICT SEMI'S Front: Dan Shadle, Mark Beacker. 2nd row: Jody Gorg, Jake Ingerick, Craig Rawson, Jeremy Huntington, Cody Verrett, Jim Doud, Dave Burrous, Kevin Sykora, Chad Clouser, Mike Smith, Jeremy Pagano, Eric Huntington, Ron Dean. 3rd row: Ed Taylor, Jeff Beck, Eric Gutgsell, Thom Smith, Tracey Stevens, Scott Schweigart, Jeff Button, Tom Campbell, Scott Steadman, Doug Gilmore, Wes Crowell, Matt Ott, Paul Long. Standing: Coach Burrous, Aaron Gill, Wayne Beck, Steve Prouty, Ryan Schott, James McIntyre, Vince Bowen, Carl Button, Steve Macensky, Joe Yilek, Mark Lehman, Chuck Evans, Darrell Jackson, Shane Mclnroy, Aaron Singer, Howie Doud, Fred Welfling, Mike Miller, Michael Bailey, Greg Lewis, Bob Yonkin, Don Rouse, Coach Pinney. The soccer team enjoyed a very successful year. We finished the year with a 13-4 overall and a 7-3 league record. The highlight of the season was Galeton's first ever victory in district play against Danville. A high scoring offense and a stingy defense marked the style of play of this year's Tigers. The team was well stocked with experience at all positions. We did suffer through a few injuries, but everyone pulled together and came through in fine shape. This year's success was truely a team effort. 75 VOLLEYBALL DROUGHT CONTINUES Sitting: Stefanie Ruby, Kim Ruby, Michelle Gleason, Kneeling: Donna Jeffries, Solvi Andreasson, Jackie Sanders, Leslie Lehman, Leigh Van Gorder, Gina Nagle, mgr. Standing: Alison Welfling, stats, Jodi Vonkin, Karen Lewis, Missy Novisher, Beth Monroe, Melinda Long, Amy Larnerd, Paula Petrencsik, Coach Martin. Missing Coach Zengerle. This year's volleyball team started it's season with two new coaches, Rose Zengerle and Teresa Martin. The goal set for the team was to have a .500 season in hopes of a rebuilding year from previous years. It turned out that the Varsity spikers didn't pull out a victory, but the J.V. captured one victory against Mansfield. Although it was a tough season as far as the win column goes, the future looks bright for the young team with a lot of returning letter winners coming back next year! 77 A REBUILDING SEASON FOR GIRL'S B-BALL L. to R.: Coach Eaches, Heather Pifer, mgr., Carol McCullough, Donna Jeffries, Michelle Gary, Melinda Long, Beth Monroe, Kelly Thompson, Wendy Jeffries, Dawn Geiser, Christina Stelljes, Coach Martin. The 1986-87 Girl's basketball season was a rebuilding year for the Lady Tigers. The players learned a lot about the game and what it takes to be a good team player. The Varsity Tigers captured 2 victories, beating Cowanesque and Liberty, and the J.V. squad added 7 victories to their record. The season was ended with a banquet for the players and their parents. Four awards were presented: MVP- Kelly Thompson, Coaches Award- Dawn Geiser, Most Improved Player- Amy Larnerd, and Best Foul Shooter- Wendy Jeffries. The future looks bright and promising with 13 players returning next year! TIGERS BOUNCE BACK Kneeling: Chuck Evans, Jeff Button, Carl Button, Scott Steadman, Jim Doud. Standing: Coach Thompson, Rick Thompson, mgr,, Ryan Schott Mark Beacker, Terry Lehman, Dar- rell Jackson, Mark Lehman, Steve Macensky, Greg Lewis, Kevin Doud, mgr. After graduating ten seniors off a 26-1 team in 1986, the '87 Tigers would seem to be a so-so team dominated by inexperienced junior players. Such was not the case. After a slow start and some tough losses to very strong teams, the Tigers went on to turn in a very good season. The Tigers won eight of their last nine regular season games and finished 2nd, beaten only by undefeated Mansfield in the second half of the NTL West League. This year's team could be called a rebuilding team with only one starter, Terry Lehman, returning from last year's squad. However, the Tigers improved considerably throughout the season. Brother Mark helped Terry on the boards and shooting guard Steve Macensky was a top scorer. With Darrell Jackson clogging up the center on de- fense and Mark Beacker proved to be a good penetrator. Reserve guards Evans, Button and Schott made contributions in certain games and the rest of the bench gave good game support and better prac- tices. The groundwork has been laid for next year's teams and we can't complain about a 14-9 record for a rebuilding year. The Tigers wish to thank all those peo- ple who in any way supported us during the season. Coach T. J.V. GAINS RESPECT This year's Junior Varsity basketball team finished the season with a respectable 12-8 record. They showed outstanding progress and development throughout the year. This team worked hard and came to play every night. We had some fundamental weaknesses- ball handling and shooting- which cost us some wins, but the desire to improve and play the game like it's meant to be played was very evident at all times. I'm extremely proud of young men who work hard, strive to win, and value team play, trademarks that characterized this team's perfor- mance all year. J.V. Team: Coach Garman, James McIntyre, Aaron Singer, Eric Huntington, Wayne Beck, Jeff Beck, Mike Bailey, Brent Eshle- man, Jeremy Huntungton, Don Rouse, Mike Sauley, Mke Miller, Mike Smith, Cody Verrett, Shane Garman, mgr. (photo not available) CHEERLEADING Soccer Cheerleaders: Atisha Gerhart, Cindy Eisenhard, Tammy Wilson, Amy Jackson, Wendy Smith, Christina Stelljes, Betty Vandernick, Jeanine Prouty. Again, the team to beat was Cowanesque Valley and a play-off was needed to pitcure the NTL-West Title. The team finished at 16-1 and captured its fourth title in the last five years. The team was led by junior, Steve Macensky, who has a super year with 16-1 in singles and 13-0 in doubles. After three years as a starter, Steve has eccumalated a singles record of 42-4 and 30-0 in doubles. At 72-4, Steve will be working on the all-time record holder, Tony Cimino (1983- 1986) who has a 88-6 record. Another player who had a great year was Aaron Singer. Being only a sophomore, he was unbeatable against C.V. In all three matches, Aaron won the singles and doubles. Aar- on will be greatly missed as he moves to Wellsboro. He finished his career at Galeton with a 24-8 singles mark and 25-0 in doubles. Steve and Aaron completed their terrific season with a 2nd place medal at the District 4 Tennis Championship. Two seniors, Jeff Button and Jim Foud had a good year, finishing their careers at Galeton with fine standings. They will be greatly missed. Coach Brown hopes that with the fine group of young return players he has that Galeton will be right back in the thick of things in 1988 season. : ►:= :■ fc„5 TRACKSTERS SPRINT TO FINISH Standing: Coach Tami Fuller, Terry Kress, Tracey Fuller, Melissa Novisjer, Amy Jackson, Melinda Long, Jodi Yonkin, Jessica Flamish, Leigh VanGorder, Susan Doud, Leah Terry, Coach Curt Francis. Kneeling: Wendy Jeffries, Paula Petrencsik, Tammy Wilson, Betty Jo Douglass, Leslie Lehman, Atisha Gerhart, Jennie Colson, Donna Jeffries, Fred Welfling, mgr. Coaches Kurt Francis and Tami Fuller were pleasantly surprised with a much improved Lady Tiger team. In the 1986 season, the ladies gained no dual meet victories, however this spring saw them defeat 5 teams in head to head competition. Top scorers included Betty Jo Douglass (800m, 1600m, 3200m), Jodi Yonkin (hurdles long jump), and Wendy Jeffries (high jump hurdles). Season highlights included Betty Jo Douglass resetting the school record in the 1600m run at 5:53.5 and setting a new mark inn the 3200m run at 12:59.7, she also competed in both events at districts. Jodi Yonkin compet- ed at districts in the 100m hurdles, as Leah Terry did in the shot put. Wendy Jeffries was the 300m hurdle champion at the league meet (53.0) With Donna Jeffries, Michele Gleason and Leah Terry graduating, next years team has a challenge ahead of them.
