THE 1985 GALETONIAN The Galeton High School Year- book Staff proudly presents the lasting memories of 1985 DEDICATION We, the yearbook staff, would like to dedicate the 1985 Galeton- ian to Anita Karhan. She has put up with our grief and aggrava- tion in the cafeteria for the past ten years, and has always man- aged to smile. Anita was recently honored on her retirement with a cake in ap- preciation of her ten years of service. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION .-J —age 8 STAFF jP k.. Indeed it is the bridge of gold That binds the past sublime With happiest recollictions That join the hands of Time! Georgia Adams LAUREL — To the Galeton High School boys and girls basketball teams for winning the Northern Tier League- West championship titles. The boys had an undefeated regular season at 22-0, the girls 23-1. MOMENTS REMAIN Certain moments linger strangely In the memory Unimportant in themselves Such memories may be, Yet they live when other things Have faded from the mind. Time in passing seems to leave The littlest things behind A sunset view, a sudden glimpse Of startling loveliness; The smell of lilacs in the rain. The color of a dress; A sentimental song, My home, a tree, a road; An insignificant remark, A tiny episode. 6 1984-85 SCHEDULE Galeton Area High School h Boys’ Basketball Girls’ Basketball Dec. 7 @ Northern Potter Dec. 13 Austin Dec. 14 @ Coudersport Dec. 19 @ Austin Dec. 20 Northern Potter Dec. 22 Coudersport Dec. 26-29 Gsleton Tournament Jan. 3 Cowanesque Valley Jan. 8 @ Elkland Jan.10 Williamson Jan.15 @ North Penn Jan. 17 Mansfield Jan. 22 @ Wellsboro Jan. 24 @ Liberty Jan. 26 1st Half Playoff If Necessary Jan. 29 @ Cowanesque Valley Jan. 31 Elkland Feb. 5 @ Williamson Feb. 7 North Penn Feb. 12 @ Mansfield Feb. 14 Wellsboro Feb. 19 Liberty JV 6:30 p.m. - Vsrslty 8:00 p.m. Admission Students $1.00 - Adults $1.50 J.V. In recognition of their membership, they were presented with sweaters. This year they are planning to take a trip to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. The new members have not been selected for in- duction at this time. 54 Seated: Dawn Reifsnyder, Alissa Butler, Gwen O'Donnell, Sherry Culp, Lori Naugle. Stand- ing: Jim Eisenhart, Jody Thompson, Tom Leonard. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council once again sponsored Homecoming festivities. The activ- ities included Spirit Week with the now infamous Punk Rock Day, class competition, bonfire, the stunning victory over Liberty in the soccer game, the coronation of the queen, and ending with a dance featuring the Russ Ketterer Band. Another activity was the organization of fund raising for the Statue of Liberty reconstruction. 55 YEARBOOK Laying out pages is so much fun! The Yearbook Staff is a small but dedicated group of students. They work all year long to capture the activities of the school year and turn them into a lasting edition. Under the direction of co-editors Gwen O'Donnell and Alissa Butler the staff worked countless hours on advertising, organization and the designing of each page. The culmination of their efforts is a volume which can be enjoyed for years to come. Busy typing copy sheets. 56 When in doubt, add artwork! STRIKE UP THE BAND 59 HOMECOMING 1984 This year's Homecoming was another successful one. The festivities started with Spirit Week which the eighth grade won. Friday night was the bonfire behind the school. Satruday's activities started with the parade, followed by the soccer game where Galeton defeated Liberty. Kristin Kreisler was crowned 1984-85 Homecoming queen at half-time. Other queen candidates were Barb Lydston and Gwen O'Donnell. Saturday evening was the dance. Music was by the Russ Ketterer Band. Thanks to all who helped make this weekend possible. 60 KRAZY KAMP Cast of Characters Eve Hunnicut- Diana Fuller Alva Doright- Sherry Culp Adam Apple- Allen Leonard Willard- Randy Long Theodora Wolfswinkle- Lori Naugle Vivian Vandersnap- Kristin Kreisler Kate Millfloss- Maureen Singer Hildegard Von Fishbeck- Carol Curtin Officer Dumm- Mark Geiser Mister Terwilliter- John Prouty Smudge- Debbie Zinck Linda Biddel- Crystal Lychalk Cindy- Barb Lydston Sylvia- Betty Pagano Jenny- Jody Thompson Joe- Keith VanGorder Larry- Richard Matz Ivan the Terrible- Jim Sunderlin Elmer Crumb- Kevin Paul Cleopatra Nile- Lynette Whitney Clams Marinara- Dan Martucci Dixie- Paula Gordnier Doyle- Jim Eisenhart Mrs. Thistlemist- Dawn Reifsnyder Gloria- Laureen Ruef 63 “THE SOUND OF MUSIC' Our Director: James Schott Pianists: Paula Gordnier, Wendy Syko F.H.A. Last year several members of the language club visited Mexico during their Easter Vacation and got a first hand chance to use the language that they'd been studying. 66 THE GIRLS7 TENNIS TEAM CAPTURES LEAGUE TITLE Gretchen Kreisler (mgr) Michelle Booth, Maureen Singer, Jody Thompson, Coach Garman, Jean Newruck, Chrissy Lychalk, Kristin Kreisler, Kneeling: Kelly Thompson The girls left no doubt about whether girls' tennis belongs in the Galeton athletic program. In their first year of competition, the girls' tennis team won the Northern Tier League Championship while going undefeated and posting a record of 10 wins and 0 losses. Our astound- ing success can be attributed to having girls with superior athletic abilities and work attitudes, residing in a town where “winning tennis is tradition, and having a local tennis buff like Mr. Lounsbury to go to for assistance. Congratulations girls on a fantastic season. You deserve the credit and earned the right to be called champions! 68 ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON Row 1: C. Clouser, H. Doud, J. Doud, M. Geiser, M. Kohler The 1984 soccer team finished the season with a 5-7 record. Five of the team's seven losses were by one goal, making it a somewhat disappointing season. Success alone should not be measured by the win lose column, but by what was learned from the experience. I feel that the team learned a great deal more than just a little soccer knowledge. They learned that it takes hard work, dedication, and the ability to work together to be successful. These young men played their best game of the year on their last outting and although they dropped a 4-3 game to the N.T.L. Champs, they played their hearts out. That game will be remembered by those who were a part of it, and those eight starters who will be back won't forget the experience. Two players were honored by the N.T.L. coaches as All-League players. Jim Sunderlin, senior, was once again the team's scoring leader with 13 goals and 4 assists. Jim tied the career goal mark with 46 goals. Jim's four years total was 46 goals, 10 assists. This is second in Galeton's school history, only to 1981 All- State player, Wesley Main (46 Goals, 29 assists). Jim was selected 1st team All-League striker for the second consecutive year. Doug Parsell, senior, was captain of the team for the second year and was selected 1st team All- League halfback for the third straight year. Doug closes out four years as a starter and leader on 70 the Galeton soccer team. Soule, A. Butler, P. Gordnier, Miss Sullivan (coach), L. Whitney, B. Pagano, L. Ruef The 1984 volleyball season was a difficult one for both varsity and junior varsity teams. The varsity squad finished the season with only six players while the J.V. team consisted of beginners learning the skills of the game. The ability to be competitive with other teams in the league was evident throughout the new fall season, however we could not quite pull it all together. In order to get back to our winning ways, there must be a greater number of girls willing to participate and willing to give it their best effort. '2 GIRLS' DEFEND N.T.L. WEST CHAMPIONSHIP L-R: Vicki Denlinger (stats), Alissa Butler, Sherry Culp, Maureen Singer, Coach Garman, Jody Thompson, Kristin Kreisler, Lori Naugle, Julie Payne (stats), absent, Laureen Ruef. The girls' basketball team took over where they left off last year, as they successfully defended their league title. In winning the NTL West crown for the second straight year, the girls compiled an impressive 23-1 record. In ad- dition to winning the league the girls won Galeton's first Christmas tournament with a thrilling victory over Port Allegheny. We went into the season hoping we could better last year and the girls did just that. The difference was confidence and experience. This year we went into games expecting to win vursus hoping to win. The excellent leadership by the four seniors combined with the supportive roles of the juniors provided the impetus and blend for success. Thanks girls for your cooperation and efforts. The thrills, accomplishments, and excitement of this year are bound to last forever. JV BUILDS FOR THE FUTURE The girls' JV basketball team did not meet with as much success as the Varsity. However, the team was very small with only one substitute and was made up of five freshman and one sophomore. The girls did gain alot of experience and knowledge, and look for- ward to an improved season next year. Back L-R: Coach Sullivan, Alison Welfling, Beth Monroe, Kelly Thompson. Front L-R: Donna Jeffries, Michelle Booth, Chris Lychalk. 75 A SUPER EFFORT FROM A SUPER TEAM This year's Tiger Varsity basketball team was impressive. More than impressive, they were perfect, ending the regular season with a history breaking record of 22 wins and zero losses. A team does not go undefeated without a little bit of luck and a tremendous amount of hard work and sacrifice. There were many keys to the success of this year's Tiger team. The unselfish play of all the Tigers was most impressive. Another key to success was the speed of the Tigers in combination with a fast break offense. Defense also proved to be a key to our success all year. Caleton led the league in giving up the fewest points per game by playing a super tough zone defense and an effective zone press. Finally, the character, desire, teamwork, hard work, and dedication of all the boys proved to be a true asset. Individuals had super games at various times during the season, but it was the overall good play and teamwork that made them so successful. It was Tony Cimino blocking up the center on defense and batting the ball out to start the fast break. It was Andy Macensky, John Prouty, and Charlie Lehman pounding the boards. It was Jim Sunderlin coming out of nowhere making a key steal to wrap up the NTL West League. It was super sub Tom Leonard coming off the bench to spark the team. It was a second team who got little credit, but worked night after night improving the starters. These boys were such a big part of the success of the team. Finally, there was NTL West MVP, Doug Parsell, our team leader. Doug led by example and his grit, hustle, determination, and unselfishness proved to be a rallying force for the whole Tiger team. Congratulations boys on a super year. 76 Back L-R: Joe Housel (asst, mgr ), Doug Parsell, Charlie Lehman, Andy Macensky, Rick Doud, Tony Cimino, John Prouty, Tom Surdam, Brian Losey, Kevin Paul (mgr.). STRONG TEAM FOR THE FUTURE Kneeling: Scott Steadman, Jim Doud, Chuck Evans Jeff Button, Mark Lehman, Greg Lew- is. Standing: Coach Carson, Terry Lehman, Darrell Jackson, Ryan Schott, Steve Ma- censky, Mark Beacker, Kevin Doud (mng.) The Junior Varsity Basketball Team provided much excitement for their fans. The team coached by Mr. Carson had a respectable season record of 11 wins and 9 losses. Starting out with a rough preseason record of 2-4, the Tigers improved to a record of 6-7. 77 SOCCER CHEERLEADERS L-R: Diana Fuller, Barb James, Michelle Gleason, Julie Brooks, Tracey Fuller, Barb Lydston, Vicki Denlinger, Jessica Flamish, Melissa Gleason, Carol O'Donnell, Julie Payne. Go Team! This year instead of having separate JV and Varsity cheerleading squads, the squads were combined. There was one squad for soccer and one for basketball, thus creating two seasons. The soccer squad cheered at both home and away games. With the change in the girls' basketball season to winter, the basketball squad cheered at all home games. 78 BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS First Row: Kim Ruby, Barb Lydston, Jessica Flamish. In addition, the 5-8 standout is fourth in scoring in the state. Mount Carmel High School's Maria Frantanarosa is the state’s top scorer, averaging 32.4 per game. “It (top scorer in the state) is something every player dreams of, but it just never happens, Singer said Sunday night. “It is really an honor, she said. This season Singer has tallied 692 points and has helped lead Galeton to a 23-1 record and the state's number eight ranking among Class A schools. Galeton is No. 1 in the Star-Gazette girls high school poll. Singer’s career total of 1,439 points in just three seasons of varsity play ranks fourth on the all-time Twin Tiers scoring list and the talented senior still has Pennsylvania District IV play ahead of her.
