A PINK PING PONG BALL In the post few clays. I have come to value a seemingly worthless and unimportant fictional object a pink ping pong Pal This pink ping pong ball was the subject of a humorless joke that I busted a gut laughing at. but now that I think of the content of the joke. I can only ponder that maybe there was something more to the joke that only now I can see The joke, which was told to me in the first week of junior high by a classmate that I didn't even know at the time, describes a young man whose father can give him anything he wants, but on aH the important events of his life, al he asks for is a pink ping pong ba . which his father writes off as unbelievable, giving him a gift of extremely high value, until, on his deathbed, the son dies before he can tel his father why he wants a pink ping pong bal It was that little pink ping pong ball, and the tear jerk mg laugh l got from that humorless joke, that broke the tension that junior high was exerting on me at the time, allowing me to open up to the new people that were flooding into my life, and made me realize that the world was not all that different from me That moment formed for me the beginning of the best times of my life Life's pink ping pong balls, those ittle things that everybody wants or needs, but are considered too small or insignificant to matter, are what make life worth living I found my pink ping pong bal in that refreshing laugh that helped me crack my shell of insecurity and see people for all they are and what they have to offer, it could be a flower that says that someone cares, or a stick of gum right when you need someone to talk to. or that extra hug that's given for no reason other than to show friend- ship. or even an extra dollar given to your neighbor in the grocery line so that he won't have to run and put something back All these things breathe faith into the soul that the human race is not doomed to damnation, and that life is worth living Al this came back to me that Thursday afternoon when I heard that Jon Scarseth had died The report that he hod killed himself wracked me with more pain than I had ever felt Maybe Jon had not received the pink ping pong bal he hod needed to shake whatever pain he was feeling, maybe we were al the father who thought that he needed something more significant, but it was that blindness, my ignorance to what Jon may have needed, that cut me the deep- est. for it was Jon. the stranger from another school six years ago. who gave me. a frightened young boy at the time, the ability to laugh a good laugh when l could have lived in fear and uncertainty of the new people n my life He meant a lot to me and to his classmates, and his early passing only proves to me that the good die young Ronald E.
