Hanson-Advisor Lori Dick Stacy Amundson Paula Brown Rhonda Kramer Brenda Kramer Lara Kaczorowski Lori Peplinski Melissa Pratt Tricia Schindler Diane Stanislowski 1988 WE'VE 2 A PINK PING PONG BALL In the post few clays. I have come to value a seemingly worthless and unimportant fictional object a pink ping pong Pal This pink ping pong ball was the subject of a humorless joke that I busted a gut laughing at. but now that I think of the content of the joke. I can only ponder that maybe there was something more to the joke that only now I can see The joke, which was told to me in the first week of junior high by a classmate that I didn't even know at the time, describes a young man whose father can give him anything he wants, but on aH the important events of his life, al he asks for is a pink ping pong ba . which his father writes off as unbelievable, giving him a gift of extremely high value, until, on his deathbed, the son dies before he can tel his father why he wants a pink ping pong bal It was that little pink ping pong ball, and the tear jerk mg laugh l got from that humorless joke, that broke the tension that junior high was exerting on me at the time, allowing me to open up to the new people that were flooding into my life, and made me realize that the world was not all that different from me That moment formed for me the beginning of the best times of my life Life's pink ping pong balls, those ittle things that everybody wants or needs, but are considered too small or insignificant to matter, are what make life worth living I found my pink ping pong bal in that refreshing laugh that helped me crack my shell of insecurity and see people for all they are and what they have to offer, it could be a flower that says that someone cares, or a stick of gum right when you need someone to talk to. or that extra hug that's given for no reason other than to show friend- ship. or even an extra dollar given to your neighbor in the grocery line so that he won't have to run and put something back All these things breathe faith into the soul that the human race is not doomed to damnation, and that life is worth living Al this came back to me that Thursday afternoon when I heard that Jon Scarseth had died The report that he hod killed himself wracked me with more pain than I had ever felt Maybe Jon had not received the pink ping pong bal he hod needed to shake whatever pain he was feeling, maybe we were al the father who thought that he needed something more significant, but it was that blindness, my ignorance to what Jon may have needed, that cut me the deep- est. for it was Jon. the stranger from another school six years ago. who gave me. a frightened young boy at the time, the ability to laugh a good laugh when l could have lived in fear and uncertainty of the new people n my life He meant a lot to me and to his classmates, and his early passing only proves to me that the good die young Ronald E. The French Classes enjoyed a va- riety of activities this year The Christmas season was celebrated as the classes learned traditional french carols as well as the old standards , in french of course. After an evening of sharing their chansons de Noel with folk in the community, they sampled the traditional Buche de Noel and various fondues Foreign language week was made more noteworthy as Ruth Christianson came to speak to the classes and to show slides of the things she saw the previous summer while she studied and traveled in France. Another of the activities enjoyed. by the French classes was a week of attempting to do some french cooking. In between the mousse an chocolat or the crepes of the croque-monsieur, we decided that French chefs didn't really need to worry about any serious competition from us. but we did enjoy our edible endeavors. The year was finished off by a trip to La Crosse where the French classes sampled some interna- tional cuisine. In all, it was a year well spent. Maintenant peut-etre compren- ons mieux les francais. Tea and Arsenic featured a murder in a rooming house run by two little old ladies The hilarious twists and mistaken identities served to keep the audi- ence guessing as to who done it until the very end The Christmas season was also celebrated by the drama club with their own spoofed version of The Grinch Who Stole Christ- mas which was presented at a high school assembly Havmg gained experience and confidence, the club then un- dertook a spring production of much greater magnitude and difficulty Presented on March 25 and 26. the melodrama. The Face on the Barroom Floor or Glimpsed Through the Sawdust by Tim Kelly, required a much more elaborate set which was designed and constructed under the direction of Bruce Kluber- tanz Also, music and lighting effects were an added feature of the production The play contained all the typical melodrama elements such as a sweet, innocent and rich young maiden, a conniving villain out to get her fortune, his accomplice - a woman of questionable character, and the hero who is tempo- rarily down on his luck With a complete ensemble of 32 mem- bers involved in the production. The Face on the Barroom Floor was indeed a fitting example of the wealth of falent at G-E-T. The conclusion to the drama club's activities for the year was a trip to the Fanny Hill dinner theatre on April 14 The club's most octive members were treated to a professional production of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple In al. this year has been a renaissance for G-E-T's drama club, may there be many more years to come Al pictures taken by John Graf of The Galesville Republican 22 Drama Club The man cose from “The Face on the Barroom Floor From left to right Laura Dopp. Char Digby. Considering the inexperience of the J V team. I feel they were quite successful and made up for their lack of experience with hard work and an inner desire to make themselves better and to perform to the best of their ability. I truly enjoyed coaching these dedicated athletes. It's exciting to see individuals improve both offensively and defensively. We're lucky to have setters with so much potential — they set the tone of the game and really made the hitters look good. Our hitters, too. are becoming more aggressive which makes for some spectacular spiking! Lynda James led the squad with offensive points. Darcie Farley earned honors as Most Valuable Player and Brita Hodgen worked her way into being selected Most Improved Player. Tammy Borchardt Only one word can come to my mind when I'm asked to describe the 1987 volleyball season for the 9th grade team: AWESOME! From beginning to end the team rallied to a record- breaking 14-2 season! Highlights includ- ed winning the Viroqua Tournament, bringing home a 1st place trophy to the GET showcase, and a good sports- manship recommendation from the LaCresent Superintendent. Winning became a ritual, but good sportsman- ship became a habit. High scorers were Keri Duell and Angie Wilber Strong servers included Kristi Kauss and Tricia Mitchell Outstanding net defenders were Kelly Benrud and Tammy Amoth.
