G-E-T Editor: Chris James Co-Editor: Angel Smith Staff: Tina Dutton Kris McDonah Beth Walske Paula Brown Stacy Amundson Brenda Kramer Rhonda Kramer Melissa Pratt Hollie Winters Advisor: Gwen Hanson Cm Il Thb RedutM fyout This year at G-E-T High School students and faculty caught the spirit in many ways. First of all there was Homecoming Week which was started on Monday with the bonfire and soc-hop. This seemed to really boost everyone's spirit because many people partici- pated in the activities and dress up days. The next thing to really raise everyone's spirits was the G-E-T Marching Redmen going to Florida over Christmas to participate in the Gator Bowl Parade and pre-game show. The Marching Redmen received a first in the parade and their spirits were sky high after that. March Madness in May was the final of many big spirit boosters. This was something like Homecoming with activities during the week and a Hawaiian dance as the finale. Some things, though were not spirit boosters, in- stead they were depressants. AIDS, is definitely one of these depressents, for it has taken many lives and is sure to take many more. Another depressor is the Iran-Contra Scandal that has rocked the Reagan Administration. The bombing of the USS Stark is also a depressant, for when it hit it took 37 lives. Nearing the end of the school year the spirit was both dampened and more noticable as we realized that this portion of our lives was ending; but we also real- ized that the spirit of the Class of 1987 will be remem- bered and effect each of our lives. Foreign Language Club caught the spirit ... One of our first annual events was to learn Christmas carols in French and Spanish and to go out caroling. Then we came back for the pinata fiesta and the Spanish nacho cheese with chips, and for dessert the French chocolate fondu. Mardi Gras and High School Foreign Language Week was a busy time for us. It was fun to don a variety of costumes and to give a presentation at the Galesville Elementary and again at the uni- versity in La Crosse. New this year was for all of us to join in on the Mexican Hat Dance at our annual Mardi Gras dance in February. Our next event was to enjoy an evening out to eat at the Spanish restaurant Esteban's in La Crosse. Our last fiesta days will be the European May first Labor Day celebration of spring and sum- mer, with flowers, friends and family get-togeth- er, and good food. And the Spanish students ob- serve May fifth (the Cinco de Mayo) celebration, the date observed as one of the first successful battles against the French occupation in Mexico. Homecoming started off with the bonfire and sock- hop. Wednesday through Friday were the dress up days. People dressed up as cowboys and Indians, the Blues Brothers, and in the school colors. Tuesday through Thursday the Student Council planned var- ious activities for these days, such as, scooter races and a jello eating contest. The classes were each assigned a section of the halls to decorate, these were judged and prizes were awarded. The week ended with the dance on Saturday night. 104 Queen Dana Johnson with King Rich Ratajczek. Quem: Pam Johuim 105 Members of the court. Thom first contact- ed the DFSR. a German organization for foreign student exchange, and he was then referred to the IFSE (International Foreign Student Exchange) After being interviewed and given paper to fill out. he was accepted When asked where he wanted to go in the United States, he closed hi eye and dropped hi finger on a map It landed on Florida. Somehow, though, he ended up in Ettrkk. Wisconsin, where he resides with the Leonard Feyen family According to Thom , a junior, there are quite a few differences between his school in Germany and G-E-T My school in Germany i about twice at large, he stated We don't have the same schedule everyday like you have, some days I have school from 600-1 10 and other from 600-3 30. We also have no lunch break but instead have two 20-minute break after the second and fourth hour Though I don't have school on Saturdays, many schools in Germany do In his school, people tend to be quite mobile We don't have lockers, so you have to carry all your books around A teacher doesn t stay in the same room, but has to change them like the pupil There is one thing Thomas noticed quickly between our two schools that was different: In my school I don't have to write reports or anything like that. Thomas hobbies include reading, talking with friends, listening to music, watching T V . and |ust plain relaxation When asked what he thought of the people here in the United States so far he said. 'I like many of them — most are friendly. Good luck in the year to come. Thomas Max Freire, from a town in Southern Brazil is one of G-E-T's foreign exchange students. He already has graduated from his school in Brazil and came to the U.S. for one more semester of school. In Max's school of 600 students the teachers move around instead of the students. Some of Max's hobbies include going to the movies, basketball, and soccer. 106 NdlJxmi nottot Society Front Row: Beth Walske, Roxanne Kriesel, Dawn Lund, Chris Thompson, Mary Ofsdahl, Row Two: Tamie Hoff, Jennifer Hill, Amy Harrison, Chris Tina Star, Lisa Goller, Tina Moen, Chris Sonsalla, Row Three: Advisor Mrs. Nelson, Paula Sullivan, Tami Wolfe, Karen Kohnlmeyer, Heather Moore, Kelly Grant, Jill Hovre, Brenda Butman, Row Four: Brad Stoner, Rife Johnson, Todd Dick, Mike Carhart, Al Rife.
