Dare To Be Different As the 1985-86 year progresses, the Redmen show their uniqueness to many. The Homecoming bonfire, with it's lawn chairs and yard ducks certainly sheds light on the individuality of this year's Seniors. Some firsts this year were quite original. Christa McAuliffe was the first teacher in space and will be remembered by many with sad thoughts of the shuttle explosion. The formation of the SADD chapter whose purpose is to assist students fight against drunk driv- ing was also something new at G-E-T. LaCrosse got their first professional basketball team, the Catbirds, who dribbled their way to the playoffs. The pep band and Pom Pon Girls each got their chance at stardom by performing at one of these games. The year was differ- ent because American Citizens became the target of terrorism and were afraid to travel. Marcos' presidency in the Phillipians was cancelled along with the Senior Ski Trip; Marcos fled to Hawaii and the senior ski bums fled to the slopes. The other sport activities didn't do well this year but the flying entertainment at the games sure made headlines! The fashions took a step back in time-broaches, stir- rup pants, and paisleys are back! Everyone expressed their own uniqueness in style. An addition to the school was a greenhouse constructed by the building trades class. This year was a time to be different and many of us were. hJhum R. TYlicld txnx) 3 Seniors Make G-E-T Students In Eye Of Storm Five seniors are accused of releasing several birds into the school's gymnasium during a basketball game in late February. Wessel told the five students he said were involved in the matter that they could not attend commencement nor any dances, class nights, or the prom. Several of the students' parents complained the punishment was too severe. The Class of '87 displayed the spirit throughout all the sports events (The Pyramid) Many Juniors struggled their way through Chemis- try, Advanced Composition and Biology II. Cordinator J Robinson, and sitting C Venkus Although there are many years where things seem the same, this year most of us could see, hear and feel the differences. These differ- ences made G-E-T a better school, in my opin- ion. Mr. Don Frisby joined the faculty to teach Computer Science. For the first time a room was set aside as a permant computer lab with 12 computers. Six computer classes a semester were offered, more than ever before. All graduating classes, starting with the class of 1989, face higher requirements in math, sci- ence, social studies, and computer science. As a result all freshmen and many other students took more classes. The building trades class started an unusual project behind the high school. The boys are building a solar greenhouse, which will be- come another learning environment for biol- ogy and agriculture students in the future. The differences should increase in the years ahead. Plans have begun to expand, remodel and modernize the industrial arts and agricul- ture areas. The recognition of students and what they do has increased. 1985-86 is the start of something significant. Business Manager W. Cory Mahutga kicked off and the game began. Mark Jacobs threw some excellent passes and Wayne Dahl made some fantastic receptions. Cory Mahutga, being leading rush- er for the season, held the fans in awe at his ability. But what game could be played successfully without some outstanding tackles? Tony Bishop led the team in that area. But, even after battling their way gallantly through four tough and seemingly never-ending quarters, this team still ended up losing. This is the way the freshmen football season went this year. Although they had a few close games, they were never triumphant. This did not put a damper on the teams spirit, however. All through the season, the morale remained high and the hope for a win never left their thoughts. Quite often, after fighting their way through a game, they ended up losing by less than a touchdown, In spite of all their efforts, enthusiasm, and love for the game, the 1985-86 freshmen football team was defeated every time they went out on the field. The season's high points were two close wins, one at Westby in overtime and one against Onalaska Luther at home. Our leading scorer and most valuable player was Tony Bishop, averaging 13.7 points per game. The most improved player was Mark Duellman, who by the end of the season, had taken on the duties of point guard. Many other boys gave 100% of them- selves to make the season a success in ways that are more important than just wins and losses. I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation. Thank you to Tony Bishop, Brad Byom, Mark Duellman, Chad Dutton, Jeff Evanson, David Harwick, Ryan Pearson, Jim Selck, and Brad Stanislowski. 79 Coach Conzemius Varsity Girls Place Sherry watches anxiously while Cindy shoots a free throw Karen Tranberg tries hard for good offensive position 80 4th In Conference Row 1: Darci Poss. We again marched on the field at Homecoming even though it was pouring and we also kept up our beloved one-year tradition of Wind Ensemble. We even sold candles again along with chocolate Santas as our fund raisers for the year. However, the band did do many new things this year (not that we liked all of them). For example, we started taking melodic and rhythmic dictation We were lucky they weren't graded! We also started another joy of our life — learning scales by heart. But we had a lot of fun playing in 'The Battle of The Bands contest for a Catbirds game, and looked very sharp in our new matching shirts (sounded pretty good, too). We had a lot of fun singing on the the way with Dar- rell, our leader. Our year even has the hopes of an even better year with the school board's O. K. for a summer band program and a major band trip to Florida for the the Gator Bowl during Christmas vacation. Along with that is Mr. Krauklis' promise that he will indeed keep throwing his baton into the flute section. 1986 Band Officers: Kira Kaste; Freshman Representative, Lori Thompson; Secre- tary, Rob Drieslein; Sophomore Representative. The big reason of course being that the club was denied its annual field trip. The club had planned on visiting several sites around the Chicago-Milwaukee area. The club had its major fund raising event go very well, working at the football concession stand. The annual banquet was held on May 21, with barbequed chicken and all the trimmings on the menu. Plans are already under way for the club's field trip next year — several sites are being considered, including Detroit, Chicago or Montreal Canada. 104 This Year John. Eric. Jamie. All the work that goes into this book from September of '85 to June of 86 pays off when we actually see our work made into a book. Not only is this a book; it is like an album of memories from our high school years. The memories, happy and sad, will last forever. Although our yearbook staff is very small, everybody works hard from 3:45 to 5:00 o'clock every Wednesday. The 1986 yearbook costs $13 for each student and generous patrons gave us $20 each. We sold key chains and candy bars to further support our yearbook. Tina and Beth work together on the Freshman section.
