ARROWHEAD HOROSCOPES OF G-E-T This year's activities seem to center around the signs of the zodiac. How will the Redmen wind up 1984, and what will 1985 bring? (other than emphoria for the Seniors) Who can tell? Maybe, if our crystal ball will permit, Mr. Goller's varsity squad will realize their dream. And what of Mr. Lund's charges? Maybe their fortune shall be in kind. In another light, the stars present an optimistic sheen for the Pom Pon squad. Will they, under their new leadership, rise to the top at at Stout this year? (they certainly look impressive every year!) What does the faculty have in store for us this year? Maybe, if the cards are dealt right, Mr. Jessesski will ease his ''reign of terror on the Freshman. Or, per- haps, Mr. Fitzpatrick and his renowned physics team may possibly, with the help of their new laser, devise a defense system even better that President Reagan's Star Wars. What of our new foreign exchange student, Henrik Olsen Will he, with his light Danish feet, lead our track team on to victory? We will surely learn from him as he discovers America for himself. The images of the future are still unclear. We will just have to wait out the year to find the answers to our questions. That is just as well, as knowing now would take much of the fun out of this year's high school experience. NHS GETS INVOLVED Irare Induction of new members to NHS. This year the standards for Na- tional Honor Societies were altered throughout the country so that members would become more ac- tive in school and community ac- tivities. Therefore, members of 1984-85 National Honor Society were the first to get the chance to fulfill these new guidelines. Our main project, was to brighten up the gym by painting it. Everyone put a lot of hard work into it and we all had the chance to show our school spirit. Other projects in- volved spending some Saturday afternoons with the Marinuka Manor residents by playing bingo with them and helping out during parent-teachers conferences. Our advisor, Mrs. E. Nelson, gave us all a lot of support and help that made the year very successful (Don't forget that little red engine!!) Front Row: Karen Scarseth, Connie Mitchell, Darren Foster, Mrs. Nelson: Row 2. People have made American Agriculture 1 in the world. And where do the young people come from? Who will take over the reigns of leadership to keep it there? The F.F.A. An organization of agriculture stu- dents who prepare for careers in production and agri- business. The best way to learn is to do. Thats been the philos- ophy of the FFA since the organization started back in 1928, and it is one that stands firm today. FFA mem- bers are high school students of vocational agriculture, who are studing to be farmers, ranchers, horticultur- ists, salepeople and managers. The career possiblities are endless, and they prepare to enter the work place by getting hands-on experience. Today, the agricultur- al needs of the world are a major issue. An issue that FFA members will impact with the training they gain today. The G-E-T FFA has many activities that members participate in during the year. They are Homecoming, Leadership workshop, Parliamentary Procedure, State Judging, State and National Conventions, B.O.A.C. Program, Safety Program, National Chapter Award, Coop Workshop, Soils Contest, Proficiency awards, Senior Trip, Awards Night Banquet, and Class Basket- ball Tournament. Remember! Industrial Technology Club 1984-1985 This was probably the most exciting year the industrial technology club has ever experienced since its inception in 1971. The trip to Washington DC for three days of course being the reason. After many hours of hard work by club members at various fund raisers and generous donations by various community organizations the necessary funds were raised. On March 20, 1985 students and 5 chaperones set out on what was to be the most exciting experience most of us have ever had — a trip to the nation's capital and White House plus the historic sites which surround it. The highlights of our trip included stops at: the Smithsonian, Museum of Natural History, National Air and Space Museum, National Archives, Lincoln Memorial, U.S. Treasury, Arling- ton National Cemetary, The J.F. Kennedy Memorial, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. To say the least, the trip was totally awesome. Besides the trip, the club participated in National Industrial Arts week, April 22-26. During this week the importance of industry and technology was stressed and talked about. The weeks activities con- cluded with its annual barbecued chicken feast and bidding seniors farewell and good luck. The club wishes to give a very special thank you to its advisors Mr. Duellman and Mr. Prussing for their hard work and dedication for making this year the most successful in its history. The 1985 Golf Team had its usual early season problems even though the spring warmed up earlier this year. Two changes this year were enjoyed by both the coaching staff and students. First, Mr Scott Lee was a plus to the program being added as an assistant coach. Secondly, the varsity conference Matches added a player each week to each team by going to a six-man varsity. This allowed more students to play in conference matches. This year 24 boys came out for the sport and played more matches that ever before due to the changes in our programs mentioned above. We had 8 letterwinners: Seniors- Randy Byom, Jim Canar, Paul Moen, and Tom Beirne Juniors- Chip Wall, Mike Byom, and Brian Suttie, and sophomore Andrew Tranberg. These boys comprised the varsity team which averaged 174.07, finished 6th at regional, 7th in the Coulee Conference, and had a combined record of 12 wins 42 loses and 2 ties (teams beat, lost to, or tied). The most valuable golfer award went to senior Jim Canar who qualified for every varsity match. Jim also won the varsity best Putting Award. The Most Improved Golfer Award went to Junior, Mike Byom who improved his average by seven strokes over 1984. Junior. Jim Beirne won the best Junior Varsity Putting Award and the J.V. played more matches this year under the direction of Coach Lee. They used these matches to play on many other courses, had a 500 record and defeated 2 varsity teams in the process. The J.V. and Freshman golf team members have shown much interest and enthusiasm. Homecoming Dance-' Hard Habit To Break The bit of confusion as to where to walk during the Grand March (Beth, go in front of the tables, not behind!). Sock Hop Bon Fire-everyone huddling around the majestic 85 as it went up in flames to beat the nip of the autumn air. As the seniors joined hands and raced up, down and all around the gym and even around the pool till Mrs. Hanson drowned the idea. The seniors showed their authority at the Sock Hop as they took control of the floor by rolling over each other and passed down the line the light weights of our class. The seniors drew attention from the crowd during the Variety show with the help of a certain Mr. }.“ (You have such cute legs Jack but Casper you need a tan!). We watched as the anticipation grew starting with fitting of caps gowns, ordering graduation an- nouncements, checking our names for our diplomas, and the senior count down that started at 50 days for some people (Barb Glomstad). The class has grown closer in the past few months, knowing our time for our going separate ways was getting closer. Class Colors-Purple Lilac. Lund has been coaching for 19 years at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School and has served as head football coach for four seasons, head baseball coach since 1971 and head basketball coach during his entire tenure at G-E- T. Success has followed him throughout his career. His teams have visited the Wisconsin state summer baseball seven times, finishing second this past summer. During his four-year stint as football coach, Lund's teams went 36-4 and won the Coulee Conference every year. Adding on the year before Lund took over, G-E-T put together 41 straight victories. So coach, why did you give up the gridiron job? Being head coach in three sports was getting to be a burden, replies Lund, who has served as guidance counselor since coming to Galesville. “And the fall was the busy time in my office. Imagine coaching from August until March and then picking up again with baseball in June. Not a typical situation for the modern coach. Lund, who's married and has five children — two girls and three boys - graduated from Winona State University in 1957 with a degree in educa- tion. And while he's been successful in coaching, his family has made some sacrifices. We've never taken a family vacation, he says trying to overcome the scratchy voice a cold brought on. I've been fortunate that they have always seemed to understand. The highlight of the year for my wife (Marilyn) and I has been a trip to the state basketball tournament each year. That's the nearest thing she gets to a vacation. A lot of people who loved coaching didn't quit when they wanted to. I could have never had this job without a wife who was very understanding. Lund returned to coaching football three seasons ago, but as an assistant this time. Some people might wonder why at this stage of his career he would add another sport to his responsibilities, but after a few minutes with Russ Lund the answer is clear: He loves kids and he loves coaching. Some people prefer a season off to hunt, fish or golf. But at this point in my life there is no place I'd rather be than out here. It's a nice break at the end of every day, says the slightly graying Lund. People talk about how kids have changed But athletes haven't changed that much. There are some awfully good kids out here playing and they want to win as badly as anybody ever did. The younger generation people talk about, is a bunch of hogwash. Lund's coaching style has changed over the years. When told that he seems to be a lowkey leader, Lund shakes his head and laughs: You wouldn't have said that 20 years ago. Lund spends most of his time in his school office doing educational and vocational counseling. As G-E-T's only high school counselor, his work load can build up. At one time, he says, educators didn't think counseling and coaching could work together. But thankfully, he adds, those days have passed. And when will Russ Lund call it quits? I've never given it any serious thought, he says, pausing to gather his thoughts. If there gets to be a time when I think I could be doing something else. I'll think about it. Or if I don't care about winning or losing — then I'll quit. But right now I still enjoy this too much to even think about it. And a sigh of relief could be heard around Galesville when he said that. You just can't find many like Russ Lund anymore. OFF TO A GOOD START Front Row. Mike Carhart, Scott Foster, Rick Griffin. Loren Salzwedel. Rife Johnson, Cortney Becker, Row 2; Coach R. Lund.
