ARROWHEAD Editor: Colleen Jostad Advisor: Mrs. Gwen Hanson Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School Galesville. Wisconsin Staff Members: Sonna Severson Becky Karwoski Ilka Garcia Lisa Brovold Tracy Munson Amy Tuttle 1980 Bally Midway Mfg Co. TM of Bally Midway Mfg. Co. All Rights Reserved Joleen Rand Chris Johnson Sylvia Anderson Karen Kopp Karla Kopp Rhonda Wilbur Brenda Bishop MEN TAKE-OFF During the 1982-83 school year, the GET Redmen really took off on loads of things - such as the abun- dance of student teachers, the first German class over the cable system (Monica and Mark), our Swedish foreign exchange student (Susanne Slattman). and the day someone stole” the morning announce- ments (Will whoever took the announcements please return them to the office?”) Our community also took off on the opening of the new Hunter’s Bridge, and the Brewers and the Packers really took off too even after the football strike. The entire Coulee Conference found out how well the Redmen could takeoff by winning the Coulee Conference championships in football, boys' basket- ball. and volleyball. The Tylenol poisonings really caught everyone off guard, but as much as that brought us down, the Valley Girls helped us get over it in a totally differ- ent” way. The movies the Redmen took-off to see in '82-83 C. T.. Annie. Tootsie, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (midnight movie in LaCrosse). The classes the Seniors took off to were pretty hectic, too — Mrs. MacNelson and her Macbeth (McBeth. MacBeth. Mcbeth) quizzes: Mr. Gautsch. Math IV and the hosehead computers (Where's the Joe” Tax-Man disk?): and Miss Werner and the egg babies (Oops. I dropped ill). While the underclassmen took-off on toothpick bridges, cardboard cars. Junior bicycle trip and video games. The new year 1983 seemed to sneak up on us when we weren't looking and gobbled us up as the Redmen do to their opponents and Pac-man does to ghosts. Just as 1983 was the year that made the REDMEN TAKE OFF. it was also the year for the seniors to TAKE OFF into their futures. I am very glad to have been given the opportunity to get to know your country foreign to me - and its people, not only as a tourist, but also as an inhabitant. The Wisconsin nature made a great impression on me - the hills look so billowy soft to me as I am used to large pinetree forests with tiny fields dotted here and there Not only is the nature nice, but G- E-T High School is too. Everybody was friendly towards me and I really enjoyed it after I got used to the schedule and the routines. Many things were different, of course, and that was one part which made it so interesting to be here. My family for one year. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lettner and their children, deserve to be mentioned too. They did a lot for me and if they had not taken me. maybe I would not have been able to come here at all ■ I thank you. Thank you to all my friends who helped me and took me out to show me the area and what young people in Wisconsin do. When I left my parents, two sisters, two foster brothers and friends in Nybro in the southeastern part of Sweden I did not have any idea what the year ahead of me would be like. Now when I look back. I discover I can stand on my own two feet and make my own decisions without my parents around me In the fall of 1983. when I am back in Sweden again. I will continue school for two more years and try to learn more English. German, and Spanish. You see. foreign languages is one of my interests. Another is playing soccer and I will continue with that too. I warmly recommend all of you to travel a lot and see how people in other countries live. It also gives you new values and you learn a lot about yourself. Love. He wanted it all year long. Sometimes he was the only guy who would stay after practice and work on the weights.” Auer, or Horse, if you prefer, has a 26-0 heavyweight record, including 21 pins going into the state meet as Amery Sectional champion. Last year he was 19-1 before losing out in the Sectional. For a kid 17-18 years old. he's very powerful.” said G-E-T coach Ron Vorpahl. He stays on his feet and he goes right at you. He benches 375 pounds, when he grabs hold of you. he's got you.” The three pounds of bananas Auer devours before each match give him strength. He's just a good all-round athlete. He could play any sport. said Vorpahl. Although Auer still isn't the most polished of wres- tlers. he knows the basics very well. An honor-roll student. Auer picked things up quickly and breezed through the regular season. He’s very coachable. Everything you tell him. he retains. Most wrestlers have to look at a coach to find out what to do next during a match. Todd doesn't. He never has to look over, Vorpahl said. Horses' easy victories made the competition look bad. Forced to go the distance only three times, people wondered how good Auer really was. including his coach. His sectional performance answered any ques- tions. Madison. Wl - Two area wrestlers. Arcadia’s Jim Filla and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau’s Todd Auer, were vic- torious Saturday in the finals of the Wisconsin Inter- scholastic Athletic Association Class B state tourna- ment. The game is essentially a contest of quick recall of general knowledge from the academics. Tryouts for the team are held and the squad is determined by a method of accu- racy and quickness in response to a variety of prepared questions. when beginning in 1981. the Trempealeau County cable television initiated a county big quiz program in which G-E-T has participated. This has allowed more student participation since each school has two teams, a junior varsity and a varsity. This year a scheduled playdown was held in April to determine a champion. 78 NEWS PAPER Front row. L. to R Becky Karwoski. Sonna Severson. Amy Weyant. Tammy Hynes, lisa Schultz. Amy Sokolik. Almost every indicator stud- ied at the local level or the national level showed the need for changes at the high school level. While the class of '83 set high academic standards the studies showed that many students were breezing through school with little or no effort at all. The future holds more homework, tougher classes, reducation of grade inflation and more required classes. The future holds closer supervision of staff and greater accountability to excellence. The result will be a better education. -In Business Education by getting ready to use word processing equipment and techniques in our classes next year. -In Industrial Education when we left at 4:00 A.M. to tour the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo. Iowa with 84 people. -In Art having the department evaluated. -In Home Economics with a very successful nursery school and updating the curriculum by adding a new course. Single Survival. -In the Vocational Agriculture Department again proving its participation and success in the many ac- tivities and contests of FFA and WJDA. -In Special Education by expanding the services to include a broader range of students and meeting stu- dent's needs. -In Science the students met new challenges on new equipment such as: the gas chromatograph and the chem-anal system. -In English's introduction of a new course. Journal- ism. -In Social Studies as we completed a through evalua- tion of its curriculum this past year. We anticipate than an additional V2 credit in government will be required in 1984-85. -In Math 4: Rocket-Launch; worksheets and more worksheets in Applied Math; Mr. Strike, the student teacher during the 2nd semester; three math teachers and two math rooms; more and more students enroll- ing in math classes. -Phy. Ed. Co-ed in Junior and Senior Classes; Skiing a bigger pa. of phy. ed.: having a student teacher from Kenya; Boys get a new locker room; stick to life long sports and activities. -In French, the French Club went caroling in the community during the Christmas Season and partici- pated in the French Poetry and Pronunciation Contest in La Crosse this spring. 98 Mr. Valiska - Principal Mr Howard • Superintendant Mr. Zaborowski Business Manager COMMANDERS Janice Fitzpatrick.
