ARROWHEAD Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School Galesville. Wisconsin Editor: Kathy Kriesel Senior Staff Members: Denise Marcella Denise Schultz Heidi McKeeth Advisor: Gwen Hanson we MS ZMSne®MSN JN IN THE BEGINNING there were three separate towns: Galesville, Ettrick, and Trempealeau. Then in 1971 the people said. Let us consolidate.” And so it happened. And they called the consolidation Gale- Ettrick-Trempealeau. The people then took Gale-Et- trick-Trempealeau High School and settled it into the Garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it. Thus the school prospered in the little community. Success was to be found in athletic competitions throughout the 1981-1982 school year. The football team took conference lead and advanced to State Playoffs against Mosinee. The volleyball team won the conference title. The girls' basketball team placed second in the conference. The boys' basket- ball team was defeated only one game before State, playing Park Falls in Spooner. Gary Towner advanced to the State Wrestling Tournament. Academically, there were achievements, too. In 1981 the school board said. Let us return to tradi- tional scheduling. And so it happened. A nine-peri- od day replaced 21 mods. At the Junior Science and Humanitites Symposium Berkley Guse presented a paper and placed first qualifying him for the national competition held in Boston. Mass. JoAnn Oedsma received an Outstanding High School Writer” award from Scholastic Magazine. The High Quiz Bowl team won three times and therefore advanced on to finals. They also won nu- merous times in competition against other schools through cable T.V. The school got three Apple II Computers which enabled the mathematics department to learn to pro- gram and use the computer effectively. School spirit was evidenced throughout the year. The spirit stick was juggle from class to class and Snowball week united each class in competitions of chair races, obstacle races, tug o'war, and jello-eat- ing. Students had fun outside of school, too. Many attended concerts at the LaCrosse Center including Styx, Foreigner, and Lover Boy. News of the year included the burning of the Gale Packing Company, the Wayne Williams trial in Atlan- ta. and the Polish Solidarity movement. Tragedy struck when air crashes occured in Washington D.C. in the Potomac River and in Boston Harbor. The weather was a big news-maker when California re- ceived a foot of rain. Minneapolis-St. Paul received 26 inches of snow, and Texas and Florida had record low temperatures. Locally we had an abundance of snow, lasting into our Easter holiday. The Space Shut- tle had very successful flights in March and Mt. St. Helen became active again. As events wound down at the end of our school year (Prom. Baccalaureate. Graduation ...) stu- dents soon found themselves in summer vacation. It was a time to look back on those events, to laugh or to cry. and to cherish the memories. Anatole France 20 22 OUK JOKSJQft EJAQJO MSMSDSS I am from the northeastern part of Brazil, by the ocean coast and close to the Equator line. My city is called Fortalaza. In the state of Ceara and its population is about almost two million people. Living by the Equator belt means to live just one season. That is sum- mer. For the first time in my life I had the four seasons! completely and finally I lived the winter season. (It was the first time I ever saw and felt snow.) Since I am from a big city, to me. life turned out to be much larger and slower here but enjoyable. In Brazil, school lasts five days a week, but for only six hours a day. On the other hand, school here is more excit- ing! in my homeland we just take academic subjects for classes such as math, chemis- try, physics, and others and you do not have any other classes. My experience here was something of wonderful and different. As an exchange student living with you, you made me change the feelings I had about myself and the world. I would like to say this to all of you and thank you for helping me with the language by simply talking to me. A special thanks to my host family, teachers, and the senior class for encouraging me through this year. I would like to add one more thing: Galesville and the whole of Wisconsin are just beautiful!
