WE’RE NO. 1 For the student body and especially our country, it’s going to be important to ap- proach 1981 and the years ahead with the right perspective. The United States has always been thought of as the land of opportunity ; worldwide we are known as No. 1. I do believe that the U.S. Sticks her neck out when needed. Tak- ing for example the Cuban Refugees, we were the first call for help. This type of reputation was made by determined men and women — it didn't just happen. What is essential in 1981 is for us to keep the name that we take pride in wearing-the United States. This aspect of being united also ap- plies to our student body. The statement We're No. 1 suggests a plural. Granted, even the thought of being the best is exuberating in itself, but how about being 1? G-E-T has consolidated three towns: Galesville, Ettrick, and Trem- pealeau. We have been incorporated for the common cause of portraying togetherness under one roof. At school, we are not three towns: we are 500 individuals that are work- ing together. If we can be proud and have faith in who we represent, we have the foun- dation that's needed for becoming No. 1. It's only natural that we want to identify with something or someone that is on top. If a team is on a winning streak, we're all to anxious to declare that We’re the Mighty Redmen.” But if that team should finish eighth in the conference, we hastily shove our Redmen jackets to the back of the clos- et. Now is that looking at things with per- spective? Shouting we're No. 1 shouldn't be used to intimidate the opponent; it should be a fact. We should know that A-l material con- sists of having the guts to compete against those who also claim to be No. 1, and giving them a run for their money — if not in body, then in spirit. We should also know that being No. 1 means sticking our necks out to do our best, and being proud of our efforts no matter what the results. If we believe in ourselves and have mutual goals, then 1981 can be a No. 1 year for the Proud and Mighty Redmen. 2 Shawn Rife
