There it stands, enshrined in the corner of some public place midst the chatter of voices, click of billiard balls, and smoke of our togetherness. The 20th century time machine, the juke box. Press out a selection for an A-l memory and hear the sounds of your year, 1979-80, play through your memory. Hear the first notes of the year as you entered the building in the fall, glanced reluctantly back on summer's freedom, and decided to dance on into the year. It was sounds that shaped us, moved us all year long. The rattle of locker doors, voices bouncing off hall walls, the scrape of tennis shoes on our gym floor, the endless words that communicated knowledge, facts, impressions, and fears, and the ever present bells which signalled the race to a new mod. A continual concert of sounds surrounded us all, and yet somewhere inside we each recorded our own special song.

Remember these tunes by the Academics ? The distant sounds of Ring My Bell signalling the beginning of a new day. Heartache Tonight because of an exam tomorrow. Stumblin' In to the chorus room over half a semi load of oranges and grapefruit. Another one of those favorite tunes was If You Remember ME (I was in your Eng- lish class last year). How about the teachers having to Be Cruel to be Kind if you want a good grade? Sooner or Later the teachers will getcha in detention. What about that great song, Only the Good Die Young in Mr. Christianson's war movies? The distant drumbeat of Tusk in the band room. And that old favorite, Confusion going on in our minds when we had a sudden pop quiz from the text that we accidentally forgot to read. Peggy Simerson 5
