“
There it stands, enshrined in the corner of some public place midst the chatter of voices, click of billiard balls, and smoke of our togetherness. The 20th century time machine, the juke box. Press out a selection for an A-l memory and hear the sounds of your year, 1979-80, play through your memory. Hear the first notes of the year as you entered the building in the fall, glanced reluctantly back on summer's freedom, and decided to dance on into the year. It was sounds that shaped us, moved us all year long. The rattle of locker doors, voices bouncing off hall walls, the scrape of tennis shoes on our gym floor, the endless words that communicated knowledge, facts, impressions, and fears, and the ever present bells which signalled the race to a new mod. A continual concert of sounds surrounded us all, and yet somewhere inside we each recorded our own special song. 4 Remember these tunes by the Academics ? The distant sounds of Ring My Bell signalling the beginning of a new day. Heartache Tonight because of an exam tomorrow. Stumblin' In to the chorus room over half a semi load of oranges and grapefruit. Another one of those favorite tunes was If You Remember ME (I was in your Eng- lish class last year). How about the teachers having to Be Cruel to be Kind if you want a good grade? Sooner or Later the teachers will getcha in detention. What about that great song, Only the Good Die Young in Mr. Christianson's war movies? The distant drumbeat of Tusk in the band room. And that old favorite, Confusion going on in our minds when we had a sudden pop quiz from the text that we accidentally forgot to read. Peggy Simerson 5 Careers Talk about rhythm! Hear the sounds of those typewriters tapping out the melody line, Now is the time for al good ... (oops - missed a beat) Hear the table saw's scream, arc welder's sizzle, drill press's slow whine, and hammer's ring building toward tomorrow. Walk into the home ec room and hear the pans clanging, something bubbling on the stove, the sewing machines tapping, and maybe an excuse or two to avoid cleaning the refrigerator. The art room has its own concert of sounds. The hum of the potter's wheel and slapping of clay. The polisher, when it misses, sounds like the thud of a heartbeat, and the scratching of sketching pencils is always heard. In the midst of the fast dance pace of our high school days we planned and strove for our part in more serious times ahead. 7 ★ ★ ★ ★ ATHLETICS ★ Athletics Glimpse back at all of the enthusiasm and effort that our hard-working teams put forth at after school practices, games, and meets this year. The Cross Country Team members were probably Running On Empty ' from continually choosing to Take the Long Way Home. The Baseball players surely must have taken time to Knock On Wood, for it is common knowledge that they became The Sultans of Swing. One of those tight spots in Wrestling came to be known as Getting Closer and each wrestler thought to himself, Don't Bring Me Down.” The Golf Teams and their golf balls never failed to Rise to the occasion. The Track Team made a dashing effort to exhibit Life In the Fast Lane. The Girls' Basketball Tern got the reputation of being Bad Girls to come up against on court by going all the way to Sectionals. Boys’ Basketball players took games Minute By Minute and after being fouled out, may have spent a thoughtful moment asking themselves Why Me (?) Those great guys were surrounded by a feeling of Deja Vu when the points kept piling up in the oppo- nents' scorebox. The Football season went over well, but how did some of our players manager to Escape some of those husky, seven foot wide quarterbacks? The Volleyball Team almost became Three Times A Lady champions by winning the Coulee Con- ference, Regionals, but not quite Sectionals. All in all, our teams this year proved to us through thick and thin that Only the Strong Survive. Denise Marcella and Kathy Kriesel 8 9 12 Now the season has ended and the thrill of victory and agony of defeat no longer are a part of the sports scene. Yet how many an athlete feels as if he or she was the “Lonesome Loser after refrains of encouragement cease to echo from the stands. Reach back into the deep crevices of your gray matter and relive a year filled with seemingly unending spirit. Recall that most of us came Stumblin' In a tad' late for a game occasionally, but we made up for it in The Long Run. By crowding 99 people onto a bleacher and creating a Master Jam , a cheering mass of Redmen togetherness became aroused enough to Fire up. Those cheers were always prone to Take My Breath Away - not to mention my vocal chords. Flirtin' With Disaster, some overhyped fans yelled unmentionable phrases at the other team, other fans, and referees. Others emulated a bass drum by pounding a table in the background. After a winning game, we felt like chanting We Are the Champions, whereas a lost game witnessed a great many Sad Eyes. Dances and mixers were not an uncommon sight for an occasional spaz attack. Jitterbugging teachers (who shall remain nameless) even got into the action and let their hair down. Pep rallies were common mob sights and participants responded to the theme We Don't Talk Anymore.' Rowdy Redmen failed to converse and instead put across earsplitting stanzas of 80, 81, 82, 8}” that alternated between classes. Next year and in years to follow, let it be known that only the Cowards of the County will fail to show his or her face at Redmen activities. Denise Marcella 13 SOCIAL it if it if if if if if Think back over the year ana remember the social scene. Recall the Borrowed Time in the halls between classes talking to your friends. In the band room, talking instead of practicing, when suddenly someone yelled Rowlands! and we'd all scurry to find a book to stick our noses in. We could easily have been labeled the Band on the Run. At games we often exchanged glances of Hello Stranger with our competitors, both fans and players. At football games we chattered as we waited to get some Hot Stuff' to eat or drink during halftime. But the real social scene was at the dances. The week before we talked of the Last Dance and started Dreamin ' of the one coming up. Posters in the hall declared We Will Rock You, clearly inviting us to come. Finally came the Ballroom Blitz. The girls danced, all wishing themselves to be the Dancing Queen and inviting the boys to Take a Chance on Me. When becoming Too Hot we crowded into the hall for a Cool Change, gathering into small cliques. The boys did their Jive Talkin' and the girls talked in low whispers of that special Him and of their hopefuls for Slow Dancin' . Finally a favorite piece of Pop Muzik was played and we hurried back in to Freak Out . The rest of the season proved to be rough and strengthened our team. Some key injuries hurt us and we were forced to regroup. We lost some close games and ended up with a record of 3-5. The season ended up below our team expectations but we felt the attitude continued to improve. Next year we will have a limited number of returning Juniors who will have to be ready to provide the leadership for next year's team. 30 J.V.-The future looks promising (1) 3rd row: Coach Auer, B. Walske, Coach Nelson At the start of the season we had tough practices but they helped us build our skill enough so we were ready for our First game. Our first game was against Arcadia and we beat them on their own Field 35-8. As the season went on we tried even harder at working as a team. We kept our record clear of defeat and ended up 5-0. We're proud of our team and Coach Nelson and we're looking forward to playing on J.V. next year. 33 2 Freshmen celebrating their victory! Speltz’s Spikers show spunk 1 1st row: M. Engelian, L. Severson, K. Mack, L. Hill, M. Engelien, K. Hill, M. Peplinski, Coach Beck 2. Junior Varsity in action! The volleyball team of '79-'80 didn't have a coach until 2 weeks before school. When Speltz and Beck came, everyone was skeptical of them at first because they were only sophomores in college. Captains of the varsity team were seniors Sue Hirner and Janet Elliot. They decided to spruce up the team with SPcltz's Spikers T-Shirts for varsity and Beck's Bumpers T-Shirts for junior varsity. They also helped fire up the team and were very cocky. One night they moved Speltz's car across the highway to Duane's Used Cars parking lot and even put a price on it! Everyone on the varsity team knew we were going to have a good team. And we did- Undefeated in Coulee Conference, Sub-regionals and regionals and advancing to Sectionals at Cadott. Five people on the team of ten made the Coulee Conference team. We received 2nd at the Mel-Min tournament and Sonna was voted MVP. Before Regionals, the team held a talent show. The highlights included seniors getting pie in their faces and Speltz and Beck singing the song they wrote especially for us. Our bus rides home were always lots of fun. Coming home from Westby we stopped at MacDonalds. Crystal, who felt like a monkey, climbed one of their trees. Piggy Piles were the thing coming back from Regionals. If you were on the bottom you really got squashed! Also, while coming home from Regionals, we stopped at a gas station. There Kari exposed herself when someone opened the bathroom door. Very quickly she turned bright red and put a garbage can across her lap. On the way to regionals we stopped at a rest area. There was a phone booth there and someone had the bright idea to find out how many people we could cram into one. We fit 7 inside and maybe more could have fit. Ankle injuries hit the varsity team this year. Kathy sprained her ankle at Holmen and was out for } weeks. The day before Sectionals during practice, Janet sprained her ankle. Even though she limped around the next day, her ankle was wrapped tight and she played the majority of the games. Something always happened at practices. During practice, Renee somehow got a ball in her face while Sue always tried to skip out. Everyone had to run about 5-10 minutes. Because the freshmen didn't like to run, they walked fast. Varsity dubbed it the Freshmen Sprint. 35 Determination high on the court redhe t SEDMEV REME KOKH wEDHEJH 34 1. 1st row: C. Modahl, D. Trim, L. Johnson, J. Thill, S. Weyant, K. With 24 boys out the entire season, there was much competition for both varsity and junior varsity teams. Most of the 24 team members were underclassmen so one can say the future for boys golf at G-E-T is bright and full of challanges. The team finished with 24 wins, 24 losses, and 1 tie. We were 5 and 1 in our dual matches and 8 and 3 in our triangulars and quadrangulars. Our record was considerable hurt in the Coulee Conference where we finished fourth with a 12 and 18 record. The season was a success from the standpoint of the number of golfing participants and reaching our goal of a .500 record. I would like to bid a farewell to and offer good luck to our three seniors Ted McKceth, Bill Casey, and Darrell Christianson. The members of this years team and their 9 hole averages were: Tod Poss 41.56, Scott Rindahl 42.63, Ted McKeeth 42.67, Joey Bishop 43.83, Mike Schaller, 44.38, Bill Casey 46.78, Don Fanello 47.0, Doug Knudtson 47.40, Dave Hovell 48.33, Rick Bishop 49.0, Paul Helstad 49.2, Mike Gunderson 50.43, Dave Poss 50.5, Greg Stellflue 53-0, Dave Stensven 53.5, Darrell Christianson 53.5, Ted Schien 55.80, Gary Berg 56.0, Boyd Near 56.33, Mark Tranberg 57.0, Jeff Kirky 58.5, Ed Tschumper 59.0, and Tim Scherr 61.75. Steve Weyant batted .256 as a designated hitter last year and has a good chance of starting catcher at first base this year. Dan Whillock was the starting catcher last year and had a batting average of .545. Dan may see some action as a pitcher this year in addition to his catching duties. Steve Peplinski is returning as a pitcher and shortstop. He batted .245 last year and pitched very effectively. Steve should be the ace of our pitching staff this year. Bill Casey and Ted McKeeth were utility infielders last year and batted .508 and .254 respectively. Ted also saw some action as a pitcher. In addition to the returning lettermen there are 25 other candidates for the team who should make competition for positions very keen. Gymnasts capture number 2 spot in Coulee 1. Other awards went to: Linda Jostad's self-explanatory Air Bag Award, LeeAnn Johnson's Big Toe Award and Kathy Anthony's very fining Leaker Award. Pam Hunter was the winner of the I Love the Beam contest, and she must have for she was the team's only optional competitor on the beam. Kris Engevold, the only one to place at Conference drew 50% of our fans (Ted McKeeth). Sue Wolfe was more interested in learning optional stunts than the basics and thus was very black and blue! Ouch! Linda Anthony, our team's greatest vaulter is still lovable Homer. We were glad to have Laurie Hovell and Annette Foss out even if for just a little while because of medical reasons. In conclusion, our team improved greatly, and as many know this is probably due to our hard workouts on the Port-a-Pit. }. On the beam, Laurie impresses the judge. 4. Brush Cross Country As the only senior and only girl on the 1979 Cross Country team, I feel that there are a lot of seniors and girls who have missed some of the greatest experiences in high school. Cross Country really takes a lot physically and mentally; neverthe- less it is very rewarding, especially if you have teammates like I had. They were Kevin Burt, David Glomstad, Scott Green- leaf, Brad Guse, Rick Jostad, and Todd Poss. Our first meet was the G.E.T. Invitational in which the boys took second. They also got a second place trophy at the Taylor Invitational. During Coulee Conference they took third, and the team that took first was one that they had beaten in a dual meet. On the Coulee Conference second team from our school were Todd Poss, Brad Guse, and Rick Jostad. Perhaps one of our most outstanding records that was broken was for eating a Big Mac in the fewest bites by Brad Guse. One of our biggest events was G.E.T. Invitational II, our Homecoming. Only one alumni. Steve Tranberg, showed up, but that was suffreient. I had the honor of being the Homecoming Queen (Bee) and the boys' were all my drones! To save fuel we bus pooled with C.F.C. (who also had only one girl out) for the Black River Falls meets. I think Mr. Pampuch enjoyed his finest season this year as C.C. coach. It was the Boy's best year so far and the Speed Freaks will all be out again next year. I wish I could be. Laurie Docken OSM ‘1 11 Homecoming is a celebration handed down with tradition and charged with excitement. What gives the occasion its energy is the twists to the old plot-new faces, fresh ideas, and a steady flow of exuberant activity. Early in the fall the court was chosen from the senior class; this year King Tim Smith and Queen Laurie Docken reigned over a court consisting of Karen Stellpflug, Claudette Robinson, Collette Robinson, Sue Hirner, Diane Peplinski, Kim Lebakken, and of the other gender, Steve Peplinski, John Towner, Dan Whillock, Roger Nelson, and Steve Weyant. While the football players readied themselves for the game, the cheerleaders planned the agenda for Dress-Up Week and rallied for support at pep rallies. The Student Council sponsored a poster contest, won for the third time by the senior class of 1980. They also organized the Bonfire, and despite the rain, the pom pon girls performed the cheerleaders led shouts of support, the court was announced and the band played on. Friday of Homecoming week dawned clear and cold — so cold, in fact, that we had a little snow for the Parade. The float contest was won by the sophomore class of 1982. And breaking from tradition a little bit, the male members of court rode atop the shiny array of sports cars with their female counterparts. The football players came up on the short and on Friday night, by losing to Black River Falls. But the spark of enthusiasm was still evident at the Homecoming dance. The couples danced to the theme Time in A Bottle , played by the band, Cirrus. Laurie Hovell Homecoming Court 1. Claudette Robinson and Steve Peplinski 2. Sue Hirner and Roger Nelson 3. The girls were picked and the G-E-T squads were off to yet another season bubbling with giggles and high hopes. Our advisors, Mrs. Warriner and Miss Peterson, were on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays to help out or keep us under control.” We were invited to two clinics this past year, Eau Claire, and LaCrosse. In La Crosse, we won third place in competition, and a spirit stick. And WOW- the guys! Two of the year's highlights were the Secret Santa and our Christmas party. For Secret Santa, we picked and did things like giving candy, cards, or just adding some sunshine. This led to the party where the Santas revealed themselves and we all went off of our so-called diets. The season ended all too quickly, but the feeling of togetherness lingers. Even after some stumbling, together we were able to get up, brush our knees, and smile. Together, things are accomplished-spirit is kept up. That's why cheerleaders do what they do. For instance: — Lynnae was usually found at the pop stand buying a pepsi or two to soothe her overworked vocal chords. — Dawn Sveen often practiced her upcoming role as Snow White — Mirror, Mirror on the wall ... — Sue Knappen was always willing to put her two cents worth in when it came to gas. — Kim Lilia was lucky because she didn't have to overcome creeping panties. She wasn't wearing any! — Sara Sullivan, because of her near-sightedness, couldn't see the broad side of a barn, much less a spotted buffalo at Mondovi. — Wanda VanVleet, the Talented, had a turning point on a game night, and stepped off the stage and through a chair instead of on the chair. — Elise Kopp never failed to bring her skirt for cheering, until the night of the last game. The situation was remedied by a quick session of skirt swapping. Shawn Rife and Sara Sullivan Opposite page 1. Varsity Football: L. Salzwedal, S. Sullivan, W. VanVleet, D. Schroder 2. When we weren't raising money for a project, we were giving it away. When we weren't working on reaching goals, we were setting them. The year seemed to slide by but not so quickly that we weren't able to plan and participate in many projects we considered important, relevant and just plain fun for the school. Besides our usual commitment to Homecoming week-the Poster Contest, the Bonfire, the Sock Hop, the Alumni Room, the Court-and our Christmas Celebration, we spon- sored a Snowball week of contests to augment our tradition- al Snowball Dance. We brightened up the school by donating money to the French Club to plant flowers. We also overhauled our com- mons with bright yellow paint, a vivid rainbow mural and hanging plants. We showed concern for the students by sponsoring a Great American Smoke-Out and Save a Sweetheart day to discour- age smoking. With a week's profit from our commons, we contributed to the Care charity. A welcoming committee was formed to greet newcomers and acknowledge student birth- days. Then we pooled our school spirit by sending postcards to the Z-93 Spirit Contest. We didn't win-but we showed that we cared. A school newspaper club sprouted from a thought into a reality with out help. We exercised our bodies with the start of an intramural sports program on occasional weekends. There are plans to donate a radio for the commons, a trophy case for the school, and an announcer's bod for the football field. Whew! It's no wonder we re exhausted. But beneath that fatigued exterior, you’ll find someone who is concerned, not to mention a smile of satisfaction. Laurie Hovell 1. The creed and speech contestant also won their district contests. Two members won livestock in the county and other mem- bers exhibited livestock at several fairs. The soils team won first place in the county contest. The chapter received an- other superior rating in the National F.F.A. Chapter Award Program. This award has been won yearly since 1966. The Building Our American Community Award program re- ceived a state bronze rating. The Safety Committee also received a state rating for their work. The W.J.D.A. Learn- ing how to layout pictures and write and type copy all came a little bit easier with Keith s help, and the welcome ideas of our advisors. Mrs. Zeien and Mr Klubertanz I can't say that working on the Yearbook was all fun because it wasn't. Putting out a yearbook takes a lot of hours during and after school doing layouts, cropping pictures, and persistenly chasing people for copy, no matter how many times we asked for it. After passing many deadlines, the 1980 Arrowhead is finally finished. Now we can appreciate how hard it is to get a yearbook out. It takes some responsibility and determination to print this book and I hope that future students at G-E-T Senior High come to join the staff and add their talents. Some of the memories of our yearbook staff are: -Passing another deadline • Klub's famous saying, I'm not worried. -Those persistent little picture pawers • Denise forever pigging out •The Janitors' remarks about a ’TwoPYearbook •Twiddling our thumbs in the Art Room -Being buried knee-deep in typing errors -Klub's numerous little errands downtown -Zeien s classic announcement The Yearbook staff WILL Work in Room 1 today. Also, we washed people's car windows and headlights, as a public service. For a fund raising project, we had (you guessed it) a carwash. We washed 21 cars and made $42. WHEW!! Furthermore, if you are especially adept at quick recall rather than deliberate thinking, you should consider trying out for our team. Any- one is eligible to compete from grades 9-12. Once the tryouts are completed and the team selected, (five members), we begin intensive training and drill on thousands of potential questions. Team members have a variety of strengths so we can present a balanced team. G-E-T has been on television seven times in eight years and we have had winners and losers. In 1976-77 and 1977-78 we won three games each and reached play down held in the spring. Would you like to express your opinion on your school's policies, laws affecting teenagers, or how this country should be run? Do you have a favorite novel, short story or poem you'd like to share with others? Are you interested in turning a favorite character in a book into a part you can play? Do you enjoy telling a good story? Are you the class clown? Do you have a secret desire to be an actor or an actress? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, YOU should consider going out for forensics. The season begins and students begin reading favorite stories, poems, plays, and novels, searching for a part they'd like to read or act out. Some research current information on a topic they're interested in. Scripts are prepared, timed, and marked with special directions. Note cards are prepared, and everyone starts practicing. Contest day arrives and students meet people from other schools who have come to listen and present their selections and ideas. Judges are sized up and critique sheets read carefully. Those lucky enough to receive an A rating begin preparations again for the next contest, and everyone manages to have a lot of fun. The G.E.T. forensics team's memories for 1979-80 include: -convincing ourselves that we are not nervous -finding a selection thst the judge hasn't heard before -getting the rhythm of a poetry selection right -figuring out what that mark on the script means -those dedicated, if a bit frenzied, practices the day before contest -the disappointment of getting a B rating -Lisa starting out on the wrong foot with a judge in squeaky shoes -Karl missing the bus to State and having to catch up with it in Onalaska -waiting for two members of the interpreter's theater group to get off the elevator at State five minutes before competition -the friendly and cheerful service at Jermoos « Still t 86 1. Eyes smiled, candles glimmered as our theme Still was played, and the punch made it through the night without being spiked. After working up an appetite and ad- libbing the Grand March, the court went to Drugans for dinner. Je me souviens (I remember) will recall the French Club's activities for this school year. These activities are designed to acquaint our students with the culture of the people whose language they are studying in the classroom. Since most everyone is gourmand-fond of eating-our get-togethers are highlighted with a sampling of French cuisine. Europe's universal fondness for flowers was the impetus behind our first project to plant tulip bulbs around the sign in front of school. After our travail outdoors we came in to sample a tarte chaude normande-hot apple pie-a specialite of the region of Normandy. Beginning with the month of December we teamed of and cele- brated the French holidays. It was Noel in December, and the students made and served the traditional buche de Noel-a cake in the form of a yule log. In January the holiday is la Fete des Rois and in February Mardi Gras-a celebration featuring parades with floats and masked balls. Good eating is an integral part of this celebra- tion, and our beginning students enjoyed their first gout (taste) of French cheeses with French bread and dessert Crepes. More cuisine was enjoyed the evening of our five course diner de gala . It featured quich Lorraine, poulet, pommes de terre au gratin, salade a la vinaigrette, and cheese and dessert. The ambiance was enhanced by the tri-colour place cards and centerpieces, and the nicely designed menu covers. Our last project was the Guignol - the French puppet theatre. The most famous character is Guignol, who is a mischievous little fellow with a ready smile. He has given his name to all French glove puppets as well as to the theatre. After the portable theatre was constructed and all the puppets were made, the students put on three plays in French. -C'est tout? -C'est tout, et Bonnes Vacances! 9 Madame Christianson Ecology Club mascot is 1. Our fearless leader and a secret admirer of the California Condor, Mr. Myers. Although we never completed the droll and monotonous tasks that had awaited us at the school forest we did manage to successfully procrastinate ourselves into obliv- ion. Seeminglv amazing feats of insanity came forth and con- fronted us this year. Recall the Cross Country Skiing trip to Trempealeau. What an experience we all had trudging and stumbling through the barren land at Perrot Park and getting back to nature . Remember a picture that will remain forever implanted on our minds of Crystal and Ruth in an allout battle of All-Star Wrestling in Beaver Creek. Deservingly, Mr. Myers was dampened at the picnic. He had mentioned brats, raw hamburger that resembled burnt meatballs, his trout area and the California Condor one time too many. Remember attempting to relive our childhoods by wad - ing in the creek and testing the strength of a Mountain Dew bottle. We soon found that high school was everything that we had expected it to be and a lot more. We found the seniors to be less frightening and more friendly and helpful. We have learned from the good and bad examples our upperclassmen have given us. As a whole, we had a good first year, even if our homecoming float didn't come in first. But with determination, we have next year to look forward to. One of our first difficult feats was selling popcorn for our rising class treasury. It started out rather easy, selling a box here and there. But towards the end, it became a little difficult to sell popcorn to people who had already purchased two or three boxes. As hard as it was, we sold it all. We accomplished a lot in sports this year. Trying football for the first time, our freshmen team went undefeated. Our boys' basketball team had two years of experience behind them and came through the season with a perfect record, too. Our girls in sports didn't have a perfect record, but they didn't need it. They were satisfied with improving and looking forward to next year. We are grateful to all of our classmates who participated in sports and gave it their all. Sue Wolfe and Alex Bauer 108 B. We started out in the fall winning the spirit stick. At homecoming we got first place on our float WeTl make Catsup out of the Tigers! We also tried to raise money. We sold candy and had a bake sale. A dance was scheduled, then rescheduled, now it's set for this summer. And how we fought to get BBC! The sophomore class has really grown in its responsibility and held many key positions in the school this year. Many school organizations have sophomores for officers. Also we are important in sports. There seems to be at least one sophomore on every varsity team of every sport. But things we'll remember most will be: -Getting that driver's license; not begging Mom and Dad for rides. -Biology Field Trips; working hard but having lots of fun. • Filling about 4 tables at lunch in the multi-purpose room. -Making those tough choices when ordering class rings. -Laughing about each other's scores on Geometry tests. -Getting that white card, finally! -Sitting on the lawn during lunch just happy to be together. 114 P Anderson ). Soon we'll be the elders at G-E-T High. But let's not get ahead of ourselves! Let us reflea on the happenings of the past year. I think everyone would agree that our class definitely has had its growing pains. Getting our float disqualified, little mishaps at dances and miscellaneous problems are things that we won't elaborate on..........But they are part of our history. Muual efforts like our carwash have been successful- considering we lost a set of floor mats. We should be proud of our class as far as talent and getting involved are concerned. Anyone would find a junior if we were to look into our choral and instrumental music, twelve athletic organizations, drama, forensics, student council, annual, newspaper, or our many clubs which range from weight-lifting to homemaking. The prom- what we juniors hold our breath for .... save the best for last. Being yeat another milestone in our high school years, the prom gives us even more memories to store and fondly remember. Yes- we re almost there, but don't let us dwell on that. Live today to the fullest, for, we still have another year to be together. Shawn Rife 120 E. Adorjan R Anderson K Antony B Barenthin S. Hoem 124 126 At last we are seniors. It doesn't seem so long ago we were gawky and giggly grade-schoolers dreaming and imagining how it really feels to be in high school. We came from our respective communities to join in junior high fears and fun. The classmates that we were first wary of multiplied our friendships threefold. Somehow our factions enmeshed into one organization-the class of 1980-as we approached high school. When we reflect on our class as a whole we remember that we were the first class to spend four years under flex mod, that we won the Homecoming poster contest three times, that we experienced disappointment and happiness together and as individuals. We arrived as representatives of three separate towns, and we've spent six years on the same course. Now we'll disperse in a hundred dire- tions. Though where we are going may not be distinct or clear, we know where we are coming from, for we have memories there. Each of us has experienced what it teit like to be in high school, and we look ahead to what we may become. But our course of self- discovery is not always meant to pull us forward; it also requires that we examine what we've been and who we are. Each of us, within ourselves, has known pain, joy, boredom, freedom, and anxiety — the singular experience of being a teenager. But we can't go back. This little jingle along with the expressions flex-mod” and lose it characterized the last week of school for G-E-T's 1980 graduates. The excitement of the big day was in the air and many seniors were catching that dreaded disease senioritis . This anxiety came to a bounding fall for many though when Peppy's party was broken up by the ever-feared Mr. V. Three more days he said. But after this small downfall, excitement peaked again at the thought of class night, which incidentally began at Holiday Inn and ended at the Popcorn Tavern. On Friday May 23rd seniors who couldn't see straight for one reason or another were found sitting in the hallways (for how many mods?!) The 25th of May finally rolled around and Mr. V. was seen in his new blue suit and NOT the traditional White one. Graduation wasn't an especially tearful event, but rather a short, simple goodbye. And that's the story of graduation, 1980.
