arrowhead WELCOME TO GALESVILLE INOUSTRY INVITED ’69 gale-ettrick high school galesville, Wisconsin co-editors: carol enghagen jackie burke advisor: mrs. g. hanson signs of the times at gale-ettrick high We are living in an age of technological advancement, social progress involvement. It is also a time of short skirts, ruffled blouses, psychedelic posters and student activity. The accent is on youth and their role--present and future. Gale-Ettrick High School reflects some of these signs. In an effort to prepare students for their future role an industrial arts class for girls was started and a section on computer programming is being taught in Chemistry. Since this is an election year, many students become involved in politics, campaigning for their candidates. A mock school election was held. Gale-Ettrick students exercised their right to a voice in school affairs. A temporary lounge was acquired through the efforts of the student council. Psychedelic posters also cover the walls promoting a variety of interests. Gale-Ettrick High School is in a period of growth and change and the signs all say GO! Among high school students we see a much more worldly attitude today than we did in pre- vious years. A few years ago the most vital concern among 14 to 18 year olds was how to get to town on a Saturday night or who is going to win the game on Friday. These are still important to high school students, but more important are the problems of a satisfying personal career and world peace. As a result of this changing attitude professional educators must be constantly re-evaluating their methods and techniques. Our recent North Central Evaluation enables us to do just that. And the fact that a great percentage of our teachers spend many hours in graduate classrooms shows their desire for improvement. All improvement among staff members will ultimately benefit the students of our fine school. The soaring cost of education supported by a willing public is another sign which shows a desire for only the best. The families of our school community, your parents, recognize the need for good education and they are willing to provide the necessary funds for this purpose. The Signs of the Times have shown us the need for a good sound education. It is up to each of us--students, parents, teachers and administrators--to see that you, and all of those students who follow you, are provided with every op- portunity to receive the best possible start on the long road of a very competitive life. Exciting dances, ideas, and projects were included in a year filled with service. The student council again organized the Homecoming parade, bonfire, and sockhop; also the Christmas program which included a two hour movie this year. After the students voiced their desire for a student lounge, the student council delved into the problem and came up with a reasonable substitute. The gym was opened at noon, ping-pong tables were set up and a record player was provided. Student Council: S. Dettinger, C. Anderson, R. Oines, E. Peterson, E. Paiva, J. Cantlon, G. Oines, R. During the summer of this year the library club sent Sue Erickson to a workshop for student librarians at the University of Wisconsin. Last fall a delegation of six members attended a SLAW convention at Desote High School. Following the Holmen football game on October 18, the library club spon- sored a mixer featuring the theme Spooky . On our tour of the La Crosse Public Library during November, we were in- troduced to many new techniques and facilities incorporated into this ultra-modem building. Official membership in the state SLAW organization was completed, and we sent repre- sentatives to the state meeting in May. Other activities included initiating eleven new members on February 8, to fill our constitutional quota of thirty-five members, and observation of National Library Week in April by publicizing and encouraging reading. During the course of the year we carry out many projects and activities. Judging teams compete at the state level, both at River Falls and at the University of Wisconsin. Three major fairs arc attended: Trempealeau County Fair, Wisconsin State Fair, and Northwest Livestock Exposition. Several champions and many blue ribbons are won at each of these fairs. Several meetings and conventions are attended. WJDA members attend the WJDA Dairy Show, which was held last year at Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Our chapter officers at- tend the Green Lake Convention where FFA chapters from all over the state meet to plan the year's activities. Our officers also attend a Leadership Training program which we were proud to host this past year. Our chapter is responsible for the planting and mainte- nance of a school forest which is used as an outdoor lab for all the grades in the Gale-Ettrick district. BACK ROW: Advisor Mr. Hendrickson, A. These local chapter and individual activities produce awards won by individuals and by teams. These peo- ple are honored at an annual Awards Night Banquet. Parents are encouraged to attend these banquets so that they may see the progress our FFA is making. There are also awards won at the state level. Three members have received Wisconsin State Farmer Degrees last year and two more have applied this year. Our chapter has also won awards at the na- tional level. The 1968 edition of the Redmen football fortunes promised to be a rebuilding season with the loss of 15 regulars the year before, but there were many pleasant surprises as the season progressed. Led by Paul Sacia for the first four games, the Redmen found themselves with four victories and no defeats and the battle of the unbeatens looming against the onrush- ing Onalaska Hilltoppers. Dean Olson, filled in superbly for the injured Sacia and continued to provide the leadership for another undefeated Gale-Ettrick football campaign. The Redmen were led by two fine running halfbacks Mike Baer and Gary Oines and the blocking from Roy Gooden and David Grieve at fullback. Paul Sacia led the Redmen attack for four games and tossed a dozen touchdown passes during this period. Dean Olson con- tinued the fine play at the quarterback spot as he threw six more scoring passes and ran for two more himself. The Big Red line was led by Dick Sacia, senior offensive and defensive tackle and the other tackle Rick Nelses- tuen. Both of these young men were honored by All Conference selections. Steve Kaste was the All Confer- ence center and provided the blocking up the middle with the assistance of Jerry Hammond, A1 Remus, Dan Deeren and Mark Schilling at the guard spots. Arden Olson, Bob Ofsdahl and Dennis Benrud played at the end position and all three reached pay dirt this season. Arden Olson had the distinction of kicking a 22 yd. field goal against Mel-Min and hitting on twenty kicks on the extra-point attempt. The football season found twenty-nine players receiving letters for their efforts and a sixth place rating in the United Press Poll for Little Ten Schools in the state. Gary Oines, Mike Baer, Steve Kaste, Dick Sacia, Rick Nelsestuen, and Arden Olson were chosen to represent the Redmen on the All Coulee Conference Team. FOOTBALL: Varsity Team, TOP ROW, 1. to r.--K. Three returning lettermen, Kerry An- derson, Bob Ofsdahl and Marshall An- derson returned for the '68-69 basket- ball season. Dick Sacia, Roy Gooden, Mike Baer and Paul Sacia were other key performers during the season. At the time of this writing the Redmen boast an 11--1 record. The only loss being a 64--62 decision to Onalaska. At this time Bob Ofsdahl, Marshall An- derson, and Kerry Anderson all rank in the top ten in conference scoring. Bob Ofsdahl is leading the individual scoring race with an average of 21 points per game. Mr. Fitz welcomed 18 boys to the first basketball practice. The J.V.'s have shown an eagerness and willing- ness to learn that should serve them well in their future endeavors. This year, for the first time in recent years, our freshmen team played a separate schedule. Although subjected to a change from their junior high days, the freshmen soon joined in on the fun. They swung into the spirit of making Homecoming a success by adding to the Homecoming parade their float, using the theme From Pan- thers to Pussycats . Schilling's garage became the center of paste, paint, crepe paper and float building fun. As the year came to a close, the freshmen were just discover- ing the many experiences and the excitement that the senior class was leaving behind. Creating their place in high school life, memories of athletic triumphs, high band and choir ratings, various plays, and other organizations in which the retreating senior class participated will long be remembered. The '68 homecoming dance theme Indian Reservation with the Nightwalkers group playing climaxed a victori- ous homecoming week. Despite numerous rumors, the Senior Tree Club failed to enter a float in the parade. This was the first year Gale-Ettrick had the opportunity to have a foreign student.
