I l 5 Standing, left to right, as instructors tor the com- mercial department are Mrs. Mary Lou Winter, teacher of business arith- metic, office lab, economic geography, and typing, Mr. Martin Swanson, treas- urer ot the school and bookkeeping instructor: and Miss Ruth Stacy, typ- ing and stenography. Sitting on the left is the office lab and practice teacher, Mr. Robert Hun- gerford. He is also the ad- viser for the lllinois Office Occupation Association. By Mr. Hungerford is Mr. LeRoy Donaldson, Busi- ness English and selling instructor, besides FDA sponsor. Credit should be given the commercial teachers, as yearly they send thor- oughly trained students forth into the business world. Miss tune Macabee, who is a sophomore physical education teacher, serves as the department head and also as the GAA fac- ulty advisor. She is sitting at the left in the picture. Seated next is the senior physical education instruc- tor, Miss Molly Wilkens, who assists with the GAA program. She directs the water show, an annual af- fair. Next, is Miss Phyllis Rust, the junior class teach- er of physical education, who supervises the mod- ern dance or Orchesis Club. Miss Rust was insti- gator of the club. GHS girls are required to take PE where they learn many types of sports. This department endeavors to execute co-operation, cre- ative ability and a sports- manlike attitude towards one another besides de- veloping skill and co-ordi- nation.

On the left is Mr. Edwin Lantz, conductor of the GHS band and orchestra. Mr. Edwin Lantz also serves as director of the many ensembles, and the German and pep bands. To the right of Mr. Lantz is the art teacher, Miss Ra- mona Amundson, who di- rects the creation, plans, and construction of scen- ery for the major stage productions. She also sup- ervises the costumes for the spring and fall plays, and the Reflectavue. Mr. Roland Hegg, seated at the piano, is the director of the vocal music department. Not only is he the conduc- tor of the a cappella choir, the Harmoneers, and a mixed chorus, but also he coaches several small vo- cal ensembles. All those who expect to get majors in music must take a course in music survey from Mr. Hegg. The boys' physical edu- cation department, pictured here, is under the capable supervision of Mr. Gerald Phillips. Mr. Phillips is also coach of the Silver Streak basketball team. l-le is seated on the right next to Mr. Fish. Besides teaching classes in gym, health, and swimming, Mr. Fish also coaches the sophomore football team. Behind Mr. Fish is Mr. Charles Bednar. Mr. Bed- nar not only instructs the general gym classes but supervises the extensive program of intramural sports. This program be- gins early in the fall and gives all boys the oppor- tunity to enjoy participa- tion in sports the rest of the term. Standing back of Mr. Phillips, is Mr. Van Dyke. Mr. Van Dyke coaches the varsity football squad, teaches several gym class- es each day, and instructs the sophomore basketball team. if ff -.J

Standing from the left is a teacher of biology, Mr. How- ard Whitcomb, who serves as the senior class's advisor. Mr. Biley Bowen, next to Mr. Whitcomb, also a biology teacher: and Mr. lohn Aitchi- son, next to Mr. Bowen, teaches electricity and radio, pre-flight aeronautics, and physics. Mr. Aitchison is head of the science depart- ment, and serves as the pub- lications photography ad- visor. Seated fleft to rightl is Mr. Fred lones, a geometry and practical math teacher: Mrs. Vera Biddle, who is a teacher of algebra and geometry: and Miss Gretchen Gates, who teaches trig and solid geom- etry and algebra, is also the math department head. On Miss Gates' left is Mr. Lloyd Simpson, teaching consumer science and chemistry. To teach chronological de- velopment in world and in American history, the prob- lems of our government, the human mind's functions, and world geography is the duty of this department, Seated Kleft to rightl are Mr. George Collins, who teaches World geography and the his- tory of America, and this de- partments head, Mr. Ted Mansager. Mr. Mansager teaches a course in history of America and is the coach of varsity football line. Standing from the left are Miss Myrtle Kainu, head of the ushers and an American History teacher: Mr. I. D. Les- ter, Who instructs American Problems and American his- tory. Mr. Lester is the senior scholarships advisor. Serving as a sophomore counselor and instructor of our world history is Miss Velma Denny Criqhtl.
