Streaks 14-7, but in losing GHS looked impressive, with Highlander going over for our one score. Urbana High, armed with a precise passing attack, rocked Galesburg 12-6 in the annual Homecoming affair. The Streaks took an early lead, but the visitors came back strongly and showed why they were rated as one of the state's toughest teams. Then the locals began an uphill march. Can ton, a perennial rival, was trounced 34-13 in a wide-open battle. The following week, before a record crowd to witness a football contest at Lom- bard Field, GHS pulled tricks galore from start to finish and knocked off Kewanee's Boilermakers 20-6. Up to that time the Kewaneeans boasted a string of eight wins, including a 20-19 victory over Rock Island. The rugged Galesburg line held the Boiler- makers to a meager 68 yards, while Highlander, Evans, and Bob Williams ripped through for a total of over 200 yards. This brilliant display of power was the finest ever seen on Lombard Field. The win brought GHS top honors in the Illini conference and helped Rock Island get a share of the NWC title along with Kewanee. Gales- burg's Illini record was four wins. As an anti-climax to the Kewanee fray, the Streaks eased by a spirited Monmouth eleven 20-12. Van Dyke had an opportunity to give every man on the squad a taste of action as his first GHS team closed its season. '230 Carro ll M Cl

Van Dyke, and with him a new style of play was introduced, a style marked with speed and deception, power and ease. Galesburg enjoyed a prosperous year on the gridiron, Bud, winning Hve, dropping one and tying one. The 1943 season began with a bang', as the GHS machine slipped by East Peoria's Raiders, tabbed as the strongest eleven in the greater Peoria area, in a 2-O tilt. The defensive play of the Streaks was outstanding and contributed greatly to the successful opener. Van Dyke's charges made it two in a row the following week as they buffeted Peoria Wfoodruff 24-0. The Streak backs cut loose with a mag- nificent running attack featuring reverses, spinners and the like, and the line,s offensive and defensive play was noteworthy. Soule Bowl, East Moline-and GHS opened its L C X ,MC Northwest conference schedule against a big and rugged Hilltopper aggregation. Injuries to the locals and a big weight advantage for East Moline held the game to a I2-12 deadlock. An underdog Moline eleven burst the GHS bubble,' with a 14-6 upset on Lombard Field. The Streaks, shooting for their first NWC win, found that cagey George Senneff of the Moline coaching staff had concocted some tricks of his own, which caught Galesburg off balance and in poor physical shape. Two regulars, Jim Evans and Bob Williams, were out the entire game. Galesburg's next appearance showed that the Streaks could never be counted out. A pow- erful Rock Island team, which had never been scored upon on its own Held, bumped the , . MY is l X1 1 X X x f Q Q 0 u X J BobStir isci n 1 Harlow Swartout 0220
