As if building a championship basketball team isn't enough of a job for one man, COACH GERALD PHILLIPS also directs the entire ath- letic program and builds high our school morale, Build your bodies as well as your minds! is Mr. Phillips' motto as he puts future servicemen through rigorous schedules .... Sponsoring CAA and cheerleading in addition to conduct- ing gym and swimming classes are the duties of MISS RUTH SIMMS, physical education in- structor. Reading and chocolate pie are her favorites, while her theme song seems to be Oh, Ilow I Hate to Get Up in the Morning! . . . . If I could swim and dive half that well! say aquatic maids watching MRS. BETTY YAPI' go through her paces. This collegiate looking member of the physical education de- partment left GHS at the end of the first semester to join her husband, who is in the Army .... The power behind the throne of our football eleven this year was MR. C. C. VAN IDYKE, our new athletic coach. He not only did a splendid job coaching our team to victory, but directed wrestling and track, and helped develop a rigorous physical education program for those boys who are going into the service. W'ith courses in journalism and sophomore Iinglish on her teaching sched'uIe, MISS MARGERY GEMMIZI. also sponsors the Budget and the Reflector. The warning Gremlin gives to all aspiring journalists is: Learn what the word 'deadline' means! .... Studying -Iulius Caesar with MISS HELEN OLSON is fun! She's so helpful to a bewildered soph who is just getting broken in. Win her with a slice of chocolate pieg she loves it! .... To a winning smile and a friendly disposition add a pinch of spice, and the recipe is complete for MISS ALTA YOUNGBLOOD, head of the home economics department. Future home- makers seek her advice in and out of class .... Iiood makes the mana-and the proper foods help make the man a better soldier. MRS. WII.MA PILGER teaches her students how to stir in the necessary vitamins and minerals and still make tempting dishes! Students seeking to keep up with the world events enroll in his geography classes for a course as up to the minute as today,s headlines! .... Anxious to help the high school keep abreast with the times, MISS MYRTLE KAINU stimulates her social science classes through cur- rent events. Her interest in youth and their problems is not limited to schooltime .... A new divan for a play, a new flat for the set-MR. ROY LANDON and his workshop boys are ready to oblige. Mr. Landon is always ready to don his uniform and join the band, or to don his swimming suit and instruct future Red Cross Life Savers and swimmers .... Dance programs, posters, announcements, tickets, even our Budget all come rolling off the presses in the print shop with MR. ROY DAMBERG in charge. Sponsoring cheerleading is another respon- sibility of Mr. Damberg .... Successful student apprentices are proof of the valuable training provided in MR. THOMAs BROOKING,S shop classes. Mr. Brooking is sponsor of the Student Activity Association, the board that brings you football, basketball, music, drama, the Budget, the Reflector, athletics, and assemblies all in one neat little book .... with a shout the pony football team gallops onto the field, and Bennington's boys are off for another season. Black- board diagrams of the intricate football plays and mechanical drawing must go well together, for MR. WILLIAM BENNINGTON ucoaches' both with equal W'illiam Goodwin, M.A. Myrtle Kainu, li.S. QZISC .... Hey you fellows, get on the ball -and on the ball they are with MR. DONALD OHI.SEN, director of our a cappella choir. Side lines include quartets and trios for both school and city entertainment and the co-sponsorship of the Music Honor League .... Throughout the year MR. EDWIN LANTZ has supplied solos, trios, quartets, or the entire band and orchestra for innumerable civic occasions as well as for school concerts. She is always receiving letters and visits from service- men like you, Bud. Teaching mathematics may be her vocation, but lending a helping hand is her avocation .... Circles and quadrilaterals times pi equals geometry, algebra, and MRS. VERA BIDIJLE. Quiet, smiling Mrs. Biddle is never too busy to help some student wrestle with a difficult problem! High Buddha of the Bunson burner' is MR. LLOYD SIMPSON, new addition to the attic chemistry lab. Nlr. Simpson fitted his im- portant chemistry knowledge into that of the intensified technical training program .... Questions fly thick and fast at MRS. FLORENCE HAWKINS in her math and science classes be- cause sheis always capable of providing the cor- rect answer .... White rats, leaf posters, guinea pigs - MR. HOWARD WHITCOMB teaches biology with gusto! Money man Whit is in charge of all the various athletic sales, also spon- sors the biology club .... Commander-in-chief of the science division is Aitchie -more for- mally known as MR. JOHN AITCHISON. As- sistant football coach Aitchison teaches physics, electricity, radio, and pre-flight aeronautics. No wonder we at GHS are so mindful of current events these days! MR. -IOHN GRIFFITH'S American problems class is a fa- vorite of all students. Planning and producing the senior graduation program is another activ- ity of this history teacher .... First lady of our faculty is MRS. IRMA GALE, who en- riches the course she teaches with tales of per- sonal experiences. All look up to her as The High Llama of All Knowledgef, Interesting note about this member of the social studies department-sheys had a quotation on her black- board for every day for more than twenty-Eve years .... Believing that more students should take an active part in sports activity, MR. CHARLES BEDNAR set up a highly success- ful school-wide intramural program this year. Mr. Bednar, a capable history teacher, also coaches the pony basketball team and is faculty adviser for the Boys' Forum.
