The BLUE and WHITE Looking at this group photo of the l937-38 football team, one can readily see that they are, proverbially, one big happy family. The Bulldogs showed great sportsmanship throughout the season and the reserves were will- ing to worm the bench for Coach Abbey when the going was tough for the first team. Being together, pulling for the team as a whole, and being a teammate and not an individua- list help a coach to get along with his team and Mr. Abbey can tell you the same. The BLUE and WHITE Climaxing a successful season by overwhelming the McCune High School, the Bulldogs won the title of Co-champions of the Twin Valley League with five victories and one loss. lt was one of the greatest teams that the Galena High School has ever produced. The Bulldogs initiated the season with a 6-6 score, tying the Quapaw Wildcats. The game was played in the rain which caused a few fumbles by both teams. The Bulldogs started the game with a green team as only two regulars were back from last year. The following week the Bulldogs, before a large crowd, lost a close one to the powerful Carl Junction squad by a score of 7-6. lt was the first home game of the season. Galena scored first and made their extra paint but when penalized for off sides, they failed to make it on their next try. Carl Junction started a touchdown march and succeeded in crossing the double chalks in the closing minutes of the game. ,They made their extra point which decided the close battle. The Bulldogs tasted victory in the next game by defeating Edna by a score of I3-O in the first conference game of the season. Galena outplayed Edna all the way and scored two important touchdowns, the first on a long forward pass in the second quarter and the other on a thirty-five yard run by Kitch through the center of the Edna line. The Bulldogs traveled next to Chetopa and came home with a one-sided victory. The score was 25-O in favor of the Bulldogs. Long runs featured the contest with two of the four Bull- dogs' touchdowns coming from that route. The other two were scored on a short end run and a long forward pass. With two conference victories in the bag, the Bulldogs went to Altamont for their third conference tilt, confident of a win, but came home on the short end of a I3-6 score. Their heads were too high and Altamont took advantage of this fact, shoving over two decisive touchdowns. Galena scored in the closing seconds on a long pass. The next week the Bulldogs got revenge for their loss at Altamont by defeating the Oswego Indians I9-O. Galena vs. Baxter was the most important game of the season for the Bulldogs because they had not beaten Baxter for nine long years. But this year it was a different story. The Golden Tornadoes were overwhelmed by a score of 7-0. The Bulldogs scored in the second period when Ted Myers, senior end, rushed through the Baxter line and grabbed a fumble and gallop- ed ninety yards for the only touchdown of the game. Jess Kitch plunged the line for the extra point. Before a large homecoming crowd at Abbey field, the Galena Bulldogs ended a successful season by defeating the McCune Rurals by a score of 66-O. This victory placed Galena in a tie with Edna for first place in the Twin Valley standings. Page Twenty-nine
