CONTENTS Aclminislralion Classes Aclivilies Alhlelics Fe alures Aclverlisemenls The BLUE and WHITE DEDICATION To the Citizens of Galena and the Tri-State District who, last spring, so generously donated funds in order that our schools could continue: To the members of the Kansas Legislature who worked untiringly and unselfishly for a program of advancement for the Kansas schools, we respectfully dedicate this l938 edition of the Blue and White. Page Three I l The BLUE and WHITE i . 1 Page Four Galena High School Song Although Yale has always favored The violet's dark hue, And the gentle sons of Harvard To the crimson rose are true: We will own the white carnation And honor it aright, While the high school stands defender Of the navy blue and white. Through the four long years of high school Midst the scenes we love so well And the mystic charms of knowledge We vainly seek to spell: Or we win athletic victories On the football field with might, Still we stand for dear Galena, And the navy blue and white. When the cares of life o'ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray, Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortunes fall our way- Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our memories' sight, And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the navy blue and white M The BLUE and WHITE Berry McCartney Simon I Board of Educahon John Simon - .... --- .o.o... ...... Tramp! Tramp! It was the sound of l7O marching feet as 85 rookies entered Galena High School on September 6, 1934. We saw the completion of the gymnasium and the publication of the first Blue and White. We chose Marie Fleming as Our class queen and put up a gallant fight in the annual contest, but we were defeated by the seniors. Under the sponsorship of Miss Hubbard and Mrs. Haseltine we held our first class meeting and selected the following officers: President, Ted Myers, Vice-President, John Pennockg Secretary-Trea- surer, Mary Ellen Bennett. Time marches on! During our Sophomore year we were under the sponsorship of Miss Hub- bard and Miss Hoard. Five new teachers ioined the officers' ranks. Since we were no longer lowly Freshmen we were allowed to have parties. Time marches on! Our Junior year found us hale and hearty. Under the direction of Miss Hubbard our class play, The Million Dollar Butler , was presented. lt was our privilege and pleasure to entertain the class of '37 at the Junior-Senior Banquet. We had two parties during the year and a picnic. Time marches on! At last, we are nearing our goal. Several have dropped from our ranks but l5 girls and 23 boys march on at the command of Ben Patterson, who has been our leader for three consecutive years. Lena Bell represented our class in the annual contest and 'was elected Annual Queen. Under the supervision of Miss Hubbard we presented our play, Good Gracious, Grandma! The seniors held a prominent place in school athletics. This year saw five additions to our trophy case by various athletic groups. Saluting the Juniors for a successful Prom, we march around the corner to Commencement. Time marches on! Class Prophecy The following are articles taken from the files of a popular newspaper, dated l948. They concern members of the G. H. S. Class of '38. y The screens' newest star, Mary Ellen Bennett, is divorcing her present husband, Bill McKin- zie to marry Ted Myers. The Adventures of Fearless Fred , the show which played to a full house on Broadway for three consecutive weeks, is now being filmed. The characters are: Lena Bell, heroine, David Rowland, hero, Jack Fieandt, villain. Ruth Benton and Clarissa Sellers, mad reporters for the Pinchville Evening Blabber, are in Siberia to interview Jess Kitch, worlds' champion pocket pool player who is on on exhibition tour there. Jack Bryant, who is agriculture instructor at K. U., announced today the discovery of a new method of planting wheat. He says it is much better to plant wheat seed one foot apart because in that way it is much easier to cover your ground. Hank Carlisle, local electrician, has discovered how to make silent pictures in techni- color. He has been assisted by Emory Cogswell who has quite a reputation as a mathematician. Ralph Everett, multi-millionaire manufacturer of Cushionless billiard tables announced his coming marriage to his secretary, Margaret Comer. Russell Kernaghan, who is colonel in the R.-O. T. C., is driving an eight cylinder Dodge around town with another good-Iaoker in tow. Jack Jones and Raymond Lumbley, president and vice-president of the We-Freezem Ice Company, have broken their contract with their radio song-bird Billie Jane Montgomery because she beat up her husband, Loris Qualls. Dot Ann Hubbard and Mary Jane Lawing, the Hot-Cha Sisters, are featured at the Oasis for three nights this week. They are reported to be very good but your correspondent cannot verify this. Nadine Jackman and her husband, Eannes Hobson, are not getting along so well because poor Eannes signed a contract with the Pinochlers lSt. Louis Cardsl to carry water for their baseball team. Benny Patterson and his wife, Wilma Russell, are giving temperance talks on the radio. Kelly Hedges, matinee idol, is starred in a new picture, Beautiful One . Opposite him is ldalene Overstreet, a newcomer who shows great promise as a comedian. Boyd Lamb is in Africa teaching the heathen the advantages of establishing beauty parlors for the blind. ' Halley Lamb and Lucille Schroeder are in Europe on their honeymoon. They were married seven years ago but iust saved enough money to make the trip. Rex Largent, All-American football player, has taken up boxing as a pastime. He says it will do him good in important games. Lewis Overstreet is running for President on the Free Air ticket. His campaign manager, Wade iPetel Tennis reports that the opposition hasn't a chance. Neal Wade and Dorothy Wallace are planning on marriage. Neal is still hopeful though he says even the best plans sometimes go wrong. Lloyd Schrader, tenor, who won stardom through his interpretation of Lois Shaw's method if playing Juanita on the piano, is in the midst of an affair with his secretary, Helen urray. Page Twelve The BLUE andWHITEifD E Class Will We, the Senior Class of l938, being of sound mind, body, and soul, wish to leave the following will to undergraduates with the sincere wish that our bequests will guide them along the rocky paths in future years. Helen Murray leaves Neal Wade's affection to Bobbie Wright. Raymond Lumbley leaves his artistic talent to Acel Lamb . Lloyd Schrader wills his sweet tenor voice to Paul Wade. Henry Lee Carlisle lwith many regretsl leaves the admiration of all the ladies and his theme song You've Gotta Be A Football Hero to Robert Overstreet. Page Twenty-six 9.25. The BLUE and WHITE Looking at this group photo of the l937-38 football team, one can readily see that they are, proverbially, one big happy family. The Bulldogs showed great sportsmanship throughout the season and the reserves were will- ing to worm the bench for Coach Abbey when the going was tough for the first team. Being together, pulling for the team as a whole, and being a teammate and not an individua- list help a coach to get along with his team and Mr. Abbey can tell you the same. The Bulldogs initiated the season with a 6-6 score, tying the Quapaw Wildcats. The game was played in the rain which caused a few fumbles by both teams. The Bulldogs started the game with a green team as only two regulars were back from last year. The following week the Bulldogs, before a large crowd, lost a close one to the powerful Carl Junction squad by a score of 7-6. lt was the first home game of the season. Galena scored first and made their extra paint but when penalized for off sides, they failed to make it on their next try. Carl Junction started a touchdown march and succeeded in crossing the double chalks in the closing minutes of the game. ,They made their extra point which decided the close battle. The Bulldogs tasted victory in the next game by defeating Edna by a score of I3-O in the first conference game of the season. Galena outplayed Edna all the way and scored two important touchdowns, the first on a long forward pass in the second quarter and the other on a thirty-five yard run by Kitch through the center of the Edna line. The Bulldogs traveled next to Chetopa and came home with a one-sided victory. The score was 25-O in favor of the Bulldogs. Long runs featured the contest with two of the four Bull- dogs' touchdowns coming from that route. The other two were scored on a short end run and a long forward pass. With two conference victories in the bag, the Bulldogs went to Altamont for their third conference tilt, confident of a win, but came home on the short end of a I3-6 score. Their heads were too high and Altamont took advantage of this fact, shoving over two decisive touchdowns. Galena scored in the closing seconds on a long pass. The next week the Bulldogs got revenge for their loss at Altamont by defeating the Oswego Indians I9-O. Galena vs. Baxter was the most important game of the season for the Bulldogs because they had not beaten Baxter for nine long years. But this year it was a different story. The Golden Tornadoes were overwhelmed by a score of 7-0. The Bulldogs scored in the second period when Ted Myers, senior end, rushed through the Baxter line and grabbed a fumble and gallop- ed ninety yards for the only touchdown of the game. Jess Kitch plunged the line for the extra point. Before a large homecoming crowd at Abbey field, the Galena Bulldogs ended a successful season by defeating the McCune Rurals by a score of 66-O. This victory placed Galena in a tie with Edna for first place in the Twin Valley standings. Although the B team has not so enviable a record as their elders, they always flashed a potent attack. Mr. Troughton, the Second's coach, has done an admirable job of training the undergrad- uates for a first team position on next year's cage squad, to say nothing of Head Coach Dan Abbey, who led his charges through a successful season winning both conference trophies. In Tournament play the team was not so fortunate, taking fourth place at Cherokee, Carterville, and at the Galena Tournament. Late season iniury and illness kept two regulars, Edward Enyart and Harrison Myers out of the team picture and parts of tournament play. The Midget team, composed mainly of inexperienced seventh grade players, did not hit a winning pace until late in the season. Next year the team should make a good showing. There is an old adage which says, What's the use of running if you're on the wrong road? . lt has been proved many times that when you advertise you are not on the wrong road-so keep running.
